Title: Kung Fu Movies
Post by: HAMMER FRENZY on June 11, 2008, 05:47:00 AM
After seeing that Kung Fu Panda thread, I thought it would be cool to share our favorite Kung Fu movies in here. I know that Schild loves himself some Kung Fu movies. I am crazy about them. Some of my favorites are:

Prodigal Son
Shaolin Master Killer
Shaolin vs Ninja (Challengers From the East)
5 Deadly Venoms
Legend of the Drunken Master
Master of the Flying Guillotine
Fist of Legend

Movies I need to see:

8 Diagram Pole Fighter
Millionaires Express
Magnificent Butcher

Guillotine is definitely best in terms of overall theme and outlandishness, but the best of the best is pre-Shaw era: Bruce Lee's Way of the Dragon (i.e. Return of the Dragon), the one that takes place in Rome, where Bruce kills He Who Can Not Be Killed: Chuck Norris. Of course, Bruce is more like an inspiration to the kung-fu flick era that followed, but it should be mentioned anyways.

Second movie that doesn't qualify, by virtue of being Japanese, is.... The Street Fighter (edit: The Chiba version). I don't care if it's Karate, this shit still needs to be at the top of the list.

It's actually Shaolin Challenges Ninja (Heroes of the East)

Shaolin Master Killer (The 36th Chamber of Shaolin) is a classic
Kung-Fu Hustle is more a comedy, but fun.
Kung Fu Cult Master is good and campy.
Drunken Tai Chi and Drunken Master are both ok

The "Once upon a time in China" movies

I enjoyed these.

Did no one like the one that just came out with Jet Li and Jackie Chan?

And speaking of fight movies, did anyone catch some Fight Quest on Discovery? Some pretty interesting stuff there, good fights too.

I watched it, not really what I expected. The story with the white kid just seems to stupid and he is a shitty actor. Jet Li and Jackie Chan are great in that movie. House of Flying Daggers / Crouching Tiger etc are superior of course, far far superior.

8 Diagram Pole Fighter

Can't recommend this enough.  And, of course, 36th Chambers of Shoalin.  Sure, it's an obvious choice, but it's obvious for a reason.

Does Big Trouble in Little China count? =)

I didn't even need to look to know this was a Hammer Frenzy thread.  I'm sorry, HAMMER FRENZY!

Yeah, it had a few names, and Shaolin vs Ninja was one of them. It even states it on the re-release of the movie on DVD (which I can't recommend enough).

I'm surprised more people haven't mentioned prodigal son. That movie is just outrageously fantastic. Really, just one of the greatest martial arts movies ever. C'mon, Yuen Biao, Frankie Chan and Sammo Hung!?!?!?

LEUNG JAN!!! KUNG FU KING!

Also, Kid With the Golden Arm was awesome too.

On that note, the Lone Wolf & Cub series kicks all kinds of ass. Or if you're impatient, Shogun Assassin (westernized, condensed version...pretty cool in it's own right).

Kid with the Golden Arm seconded.

Probably one of the most awesome movies I've seen I don't even know the name of... Duo team, with one dude who was legless, on top of the shoulders of a dude who was armless.
