I can't help it, I should hate that they gave a sort of anime treatment to everything but...dexter was/is and always shall be...awesome

Edit:it looks to have platforming elements, this may never be the hottest online game out there but looks fun.

We played this. A decent bit in fact. And the guys behind it are goddamn swell.

I'll play this the first chance they give me.

It's like seeing doujinshi  (http://ppg.snafu-comics.com/?strip_id=0) adapted into an official product.

First playable demo I went to was at GDC. Might've been the first playable demo period, not sure. Platforming worked as advertised.

Turner has a bad habit of creating awesome things and then not supporting them very well. Hopefully things are changing!

When I was laid up a bit I got to watch a lot of this (and other CN series).  I have to admit I liked Ben 10, and totally rooted for Gwen all the time.

Beat me to it; yeah I played this a bit at last year's Comic Con also.  Probably still have some blurry cellphone pics of it.

It seemed like fun.  Not ground breaking, but fun.

YARGH holy crap, ever since they showed that commercial with Space Ghost and Fred Flinstone trying to find where they parked, and Speed Buggy was there sputtering in the corner, I was like dammit I wanna play an MMO in that world!

So while I'm sure they won't have everythings, at least they'll have somethings. I'll be keeping my eyes on this.

NECROPOST

My wife and Daughter have discovered that this weekend is a free preview weekend.   As with all free & open betas it's disconnecting and locking-up randomly.  It does, however, look pretty damn good.

https://audience.fusionfall.com/ff/ffLogin.do

That IS the link, it may or may not pop-up as they're getting hammered. Jut hit refresh.

They haven't shut the servers off yet, so I'm going to play until they do. So far this is quite well done, and the tutorial and theme seemed very cohesive. It's certainly leaps beyond ToonTown in the space of MMOs for the younger demographic. The style is nice, and it works the IP into itself in an alternate fanservice universe sort of way. I have a miniature power puff girl who punches shit. Fuckin' a.

I'm glad you enjoyed it.  We had some bumps early on, but it was a very valuable learning experience (i.e. many "hair on fire" moments).  Another Sneak Peek coming next weekend and Open Beta coming up soon as well.

Thanks,

I had fun with it yesterday.  Just got out of the tutorial area when I put it down.

It's going to be great for training kids to play DIKU-style games when they're older, but so far the kill quests have been small, and the fed-ex quests pretty quick.  I'm hoping once they get going they can expand the playstyle to give a little more variety.

I wish you could keep your clothes instead of needing to trade them in for better ones.  In cartoons, a character's looks tend to be a part of who they are.  There is a good selection to start off with, which is why it's a shame to feel forced to change outfits into whatever you find or is available in the store.  Some kind of clothing merge would be welcome.

The zip lines off the KND headquarters and in a few other places are an awesome idea.  I think it was a bug, but getting coco's jump boost stuck on me for long periods was really fun, as I could climb all kinds of places like a monkey.  (Most are meant to, this just makes it easier.  There's probably a nano which gives the ability more consistantly.)

Taking the 'lore' and mashing it together was interesting.  I'm sure there are lots of touches I was missing, however the ones I did get made the world fun.  Is there a Gwen nano?  I need my chibi Gwen.

It's also impressive how well it plays in a browser window.  I can see this engine getting use elsewhere, if it hasn't already.

Unity3d is a really great engine, and I hope it gains more prominence, especially after FusionFall. Its nice that it the plugin can be installed without even restarting your browser, but ultimately, like other non-flash plugins, it has the uphill battle of getting people to click that install button to begin with. They've done a great job of making it easy, now they need some killer apps to push the platform to more portals.

No insult meant to GG, but I think it has far more potential in the world of browser 3d than InstantAction does.

Last i checked however, Unity3D was Mac only development (but publish to anything). I was about to recommend it for our next project...but you try convincing military types to swap out everyone's computers =)

They really, really, really, really, need to get the windows development tools out.

I bought a mac mini to check out unity, but ultimately thats all I did, check it out. As a PC guy, I didnt really like using a mac to develop, and team didnt all have macs so, it couldnt really go anywhere.

That's a shame.  Web games would really benefit if PC devs could access the tools.  Then Darniaq's web revolution could begin.

I've been playing this for 2 days. It's eating up most of my free time. I dont understand how WAR failed so badly in appearance, consistency, and FUN. Fusionfall got those so right (for me). There is the big caveat that the flash app randomly crashes, drops me, or effectively freezes my entire Mac OSX (dont fullscreen it!) after 2 hours AT MOST. WAR only crashed on me 3 times in 2 weeks. I enjoy the sounds/voicing, the cell shaded everything, the climbable/exploitable terrain (sometimes you'll clip through a spot you shouldnt be able to and it desyncs you). It's very hard to tell what you aren't supposed to be able to do tho, when so many things are just "a-ha, that's faster/easier!" Still grindy overall, but never hard or slow to do the grind, it's the travel, ugh. The quests are boring if you dont like/understand the flavor text and a bit quicker once you learn to speed around using, speed nanos, monkey transit (just like WoW griffons), railbus transit (very similar to the WoW tram, but better because it's not instanced), puddle jumper transit (warping). Boss/Levelup fights are a joke. Platforming is not restrictive to "one way" and none of them have been difficult. The platforming areas encapsulate lots of different missions. Each "infected zone" is like a large, complex, platform jungle gym. Very well done. Little touches like the zip lines, being able to climb onto and over every large structure (in most cases) or wall, walking on wires, fences, etc. are nice. It has a real "what can I do?" feel everywhere. I'm an explorer type, so I love it. Trying to min/max your time with all the missions being go here click this (or click these until 5 are dead) is really getting on my nerves with everything else being so nicely done. This is a pure solo game so far (level 9) in a browser, kid friendly, and I remember the Cartoon Network characters being more...primitive. Large large large world (exaserbating the travel problem) with almost no empty space (see the edges for some pointless empty terrain ridges) and with "kid friendly", consistently themed monsters. The models are really complex and the names funny for being grind monsters.

At the library I work at, pretty much anytime I have to check the PCs to make sure they're working properly and people aren't looking at porn around kids, there's at least two or three kids playing this game at any time.

It's the new big thing at my branch.  I asked a kid about it and got a lengthy discourse from him about how awesome it is, but it really doesn't look like my thing.

Free play ends at the future zone and you can't go beyond level 4.  It's really more of an unlimited trial, which is unfortunate.  I'll give them props for having a subscription plan less than $15 a month though.

Since release (or maybe since level 10) the experience has slowed down considerably. Increase in crashes for Firefox (OSX and XP). Sound effects have been added to certain actions, local/general chat is enabled (finally) but the game is not substantially different.

It definitely has had performance issues. At first I could register, then it'd hang at log in, then it would hang at the moment I entered the world. But once you're in the world, it mostly works if a bit laggy (and they have the same untargetable-mob thing that pervades most AAA beta periods).

I think it's a solid title. No our-game killer, but I think it represents the third step of evolution after Runescape and Club Penguin. As mentioned here it has all the features we know retain players, but it's in a recognizable IP targeting a new-ish audience and doesn't bother with autoattack/targetlock. It feels pretty grindy (and is it just me, or is there really no XP meter?), but that may work for the kids.

Title: Re: Because they can: Cartoon Network mushes all their universes into an MMORPG.
Post by: Lantyssa on February 21, 2009, 07:50:00 AM
It's less grindy than most major MMOs.  Same type of grind, but less of it.

It kind of doesn't have an xp meter.  You level by collecting the nano associated with that level.  There's a nano power meter or something which determines when you get offered that next mission, but if you're going around blasting stuff and doing missions, it's almost always full and ready for the next nano/level once you grab the current one you're offered.  At least until level six or seven.  There may be more work involved once you're on the high level nanos.  That is as far as I got in beta.

Post by: Venkman on February 21, 2009, 08:45:34 AM
Oh, so it's quest-based? If I recall, I dinged at a quest turn in, then got a nano. But it might have been a get-a-nano quest :-)

Title: Re: Because they can: Cartoon Network mushes all their universes into an MMORPG.
Post by: Jack9 on February 23, 2009, 12:13:58 AM
The fusion meter (xp meter) is the black ring that slowly fills with green fusion, encircling the map. It's so quickly filled at the start, it's usually not noticed. Also you can fill it completely, get awarded the nano-mission (each instanced nano-mission dungeon defeated awards you a new nano pet option and a new level), then instead of doing the nano-mission, just fill the bar again (grind or quest). I completed the level 10 nano mission and level 11 nano mission immedately afterward, effectively skipping my 10th level.
