Sad but true, quite a few GSM providers use a financial clearing house that has an ex-Nigerian banker acting as a collections/support guy.  The first time someone forwarded an email requesting 1.8 million dollars, I couldn't stop laughing.  Even now when I think of the guys name, I can't stop laughing.

The idea is that you'll pay the £82 then one of the following situations will happen:
They'll continue to invent new charges that need to be paid to expedite the transfer of your funds. The hope is that you'll keep paying these fees as you feel you're somehow invested in this operation and the huge cheque is almost within your grasp.
This is just a gullibility test to see how likely you are to fall for a mark. If you do pay for this then there's a good chance the letter will involve some kind of cheque fraud or phishing fraud.

Why is it always Nigeria?

Because running kooky frauds from internet cafes is a sport there (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Advance_fee_fraud).

No, really. They even have a music video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D_YjvC4ndzM).

Heh this is quite subtle at least, more subtle than 'You are related to a recently deceased military officer under Saddam Hussein who own a shit load of gold' scam I got back then from Hong Kong.

I wish I never saw that. Now everytime someone mentions money scams my brain will automatically sing that song.  :ye_gods:

It's like when someone says Indiana Jones, you go "tan tan tantaaaan tan tan taaaan!"

No way!  It's like an official email that even says it is!  Why would he be lying?

The vocabulary choices and grammar are just horrific.

Granted, that alone doesn't make it unofficial these days. :uhrr:
