Title: Cult of "Emo" newest threat to you children

speaking about “the black parade” - a place where “emos” believe they go after they die.

Not quite as alarmist as it might seem (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/1935735/Popular-schoolgir%20l-dies-in-'emo-sucide-cult'.html) but I thought the use of ""s and bizarre claims was brilliant.

Huh... weird when I first read the title I saw "Cult of "Elmo" newest threat to you children".

I was expecting the exposure of a Sesame Street plot to brainwash the children.

Heh- same. They DO brainwash your kids- they make them demand that you buy them anything with that little fucker's name or face on it.

True, I think it is time to bring some old traditions back. You know what I'm going to say. Parents, start beating your kids! :ye_gods: (I don't mean falcon punch, armbar, dropkick, just a little ol'school fassioned slap'n'scream)

Remember when people used to call Weezer an Emo band?

I do.  And they were, too!

Weezer was emo. And then emo changed, and so did Weezer, and then neither Weezer nor emo were emo.

Weezer was considered by a lot of people to be the original Emo band back in 2000.  They absolutely hated being called Emo.  Of course, being called "Geek Rock' isn't any better.

How the fuck was Weezer considered EMO?

Because originally emo was more about wearing geek chic fashion and seeing emotional rock then being a cutter and feeling super duper sorry for yourself.  The term was practically coined to describe Weezer originally according to what I remember reading and being told when I first heard it myself.

I was always of the opinion that Emo was around back in the 80's as an offshoot of Hardcore punk.  Somewhat before Weezers time.

No one applied the term to bands until Weezer around the turn of the century.  And then Dashboard Confessional happened.

You're right.

No one applied the term to bands until Weezer around the turn of the century.  And then Dashboard Confessional happened.

You're wrong.

The goth punk kids are absolutely the direct antecedents of today's emo kids.  There was a lot of that same overly emotional, woe is me, life sucks I should just kill myself at 13, where did I leave my straight razor? vibe.

I'm only talking from my own personal experience here.  I'd be interested in seeing evidence of the term Emo from pre-Weezer.

The first band I heard associate with emo was Modest Mouse, which I now think was the result of my friend talking out of his ass.

The original emo bands I think of are names like Sunny Day Real Estate, Christie Front Drive, Braid, etc.  I think Silversun Pickups sound pretty emo but I'm too old to be qualified to say so.

Weezer?  I guess sometimes they are a little emo, but like someone said, more geek rock.

You're just mad because Weezer isn't in that article at all.

There's a reference to Weezer and the Pinkerton album.  But yes, it appears I was mistaken.

From the wiki article.

Critics of modern emo have argued that there is a tendency toward increasingly generic and homogenized style.
