Title: Mirror's Edge (Demo out)

Wow that is a bright and nice color palette. Too bad you have to play as an emo Korean chick or something.

Yea, it looks pretty much fantastic.

But Dice + EA.

edit: Also, I have no idea why but watching that trailer makes me breathe better. Maybe it's just the shock of seeing a game with a bright color palette without a hint of brown or fuzzy over-HDR'd edges. Also that sky.

Wow looks cool... I almost lost faith in FPS's giving a real first person feel to things. This seems to do it though.

She looks like Nic Endo.

Between this, Skate and a few other releases, EA is officially off my shit list.  Madden and it's ilk still suck, but can't win em all.  :P

Love the aesthetic of this with the bright colors and clean look.  A first person game with something beyond a floating gun as a protagonist is a nice change of pace, and basing a game around parkour and martial arts sounds like an interesting concept.

And it will be on PC, so there's one more decent looking game to be found.

The video reminds me of that crazy Parkour guy that uses buildings for a jungle gym.

Sweet  :-)

I await the imminent complaints of motion sickness.

Beyond the whole EA thing, I'm skeptical that there'll be as much free-running freedom as people are projecting onto the trailer. I'd expect something more humble, like a tightly-designed on-rails obstacle course.

That said, I've been looking for something with melee combat as tactile as Oni's, and this looks like it might fit the bill.

Very interesting. The color palette not being 50 shades of murky mudslide was refreshing. I wonder how well the controls will work, though. Melee FPS on the PC hasn't had a long history of goodness.

It looks like it's completely on rails, but it also looks fun, so whatever.

My only complaint was that I didn't see the character's reflection when she was running up to that window.  It's 2008, people.  If you're going to have shiny surfaces in your game, do 'em right.

Could be something to do with the plot. Mirror's Edge? Maybe she has no reflection.

Lol, I don't know why but that stuck out at me too.

Looks pretty sweet none-the-less.  Finally some fps innovation.  It looks like the game color codes any object you can do something with (like tightrope walk on or superjump) red.  So depends on your definition of "on rails" I guess.

Good point.  That would be convenient, wouldn't it?  Sort of like how Gordon Freeman is a mute and all of the mirrors in City 17 are broken.   :awesome_for_real:

Demo is out on PSN at least. I imagine it's on Live as well.

Very very cool. Controls are pretty good but good god it takes some really solid reaction time and spacial awareness to keep a really good flow going.

I think they modified the controls or something...I recall them saying early on that the up/down stuff (like rolling after big falls or jumping/sliding) was handled by actually looking up or down while in motion you could focus more on your movement instead of timed button presses.

Still cool though. Great graphics too.

Yeah, this demo is from a year ago, so from what I've heard a few things are different in the release, but who knows. Overall this game is just amazing and demands to be played in high def/high resolution with good sound. The air blowing by as you fly from one building to the next really adds to the atmosphere. I like how you pick up speed and it makes it believable. Definitely can't wait for the 13th.

EDIT:

YOU CAN PUNCH PEOPLE IN THE DICK!

Wow, EA is on a roll lately. I guess this is what happens when the dudes all buy up Madden each yet:

The rest of us get to try our their more "experimental" games.

So uh...Go Madden?  :oh_i_see:

Eh, I'm not a huge console player (actually the PS3 is my first one since 15 years) and their control scheme makes my head explode. Not sure whether I want the PS3 version to play on my huge TV or the PC version because mouse look is easier on my brain.

The demo was nice tho.

Madden did shitty this year. Riccitello is the man behind the new IP movement.

I'm aware, but I'm sure he wouldn't be allowed to "risk" money on these "new" games if they could not afford to take a hit on a dud.

Though, at least by my count, EA appears to be going 2 for 2 with their new strategy of actually making new IP.

EDIT: Also, was fooling with the Time Trial mode. From watching some of the top-ranked people...wow, would never have thought of some of these moves. Some of it reminds me of the Batman on NES with all the wall jumping.

I really want a 3rd person replay mode, to see how fucking cool I look.

Even though it's on rails, you can take several approaches to how you get to each point. I really really like the style of the game. It's definitely fun in a puzzle/speedrun/portal kind if way. I did get caugth up a few times in a room where i was escaping the guys with guns and instead of turning right to go out the door i kept going left and trying to find and exit up in the air ducts... idiot

Anyone had any success fighting the four guys when you drop out of the vents? I know you're not supposed to, but I can't help but keeping trying. I managed to wall run, jump off, kick one and disarm, and then shoot two, but that was a lot of luck, and I haven't been able to repeat it.

If you run around the corner and let them come to you, you can usually drop one, get a gun and pop 2, then jumpkick the last one. You'll likely be 90% dead afterwards, but hey.

Yeah, I didn't want to kite them or anything. I thought about it, but I figured the whole point in killing them was an act of cinematic bad-assery.

Well, you're clearly supposed to run so there's no real badass option to take all 4 out. I wish there was a better option for knocking people out while maintaining momentum. A good shoulder check that forcefully redirects you would be cool. Or maybe being able to wallrun off people to knock people down while simultaneously taking a sharp corner.

Apparently some people (I guess game magazines) have played the full game already and claim that the total playtime's a little lean. Like 5-6 hours on first playthrough and if you've the hang of it, you can manage to cross it within 75 minutes in time trial mode.

My oh my.
Want to know who made the italian voice dubbing for Faith?

Ms. Asia Argento (on the left). Hilarious and amazing at the same time, as she is a incredibly poor actress with a peculiar voice.
Tried the demo by the way, and it's great.

P.S: Nic Endo is a goddess.

You really need to hit up YouTube and watch some of the Parkour kids around. They can do some crazy wall jumping without losing momentum or stopping them from doing it again.

Infinite wall jumping between flat walls is lame IMO since it might mean an area will require it and mashing the crap out of buttons with the kind of timing required to do it in the demo would be really irritating. Also because it's sorta impossible in real like (nevermind that even if you were in great shape you'd still get seriously injured rolling out of 90% of the falls in the demo, but hey).

I tried the demo out at a party over the weekend. It was pretty awesome, but I can't help but feel it would be more awesome if I was Batman instead of some vaguely emo fight-the-power Korean chick. Being Batman would also put all this Realism Nazi shit to rest.

Hopefully there's a PC demo so I can decide whether mouse & keyboard kills this game - it seems to be pretty well-adapted to the PS3 controller, and I don't know if it'll translate well. Unless there's PS3-to-PC controller adapters. Then all bets are off.

The PS3 version feels well adapted? What? To be fair, I'm sure you play less First Person titles on a console than me, by some magnitude, as such, you may have the upper leg here. But upwards/downward movement on the shoulders is digustingly awkward.

Don't see the problem here.

W/S movement, A/D strafing, mouselook, mouse buttons jump and slide, Q/E punch and kick (alternative scheme switching buttons and Q/E), disarm on space key. Or some shit like that.

Yeah, I was thinking more of the rolling and balancing stuff. And I play essentially no first-person titles on a console since I don't own one and rarely play that type of game at parties where consoles are available (it's usually Rock Band or Guitar Hero at that point), so your point is valid - I'm not tuned to expect a certain movement/control scheme with a controller.

Yeah, that could work, but I feel that analog controls would work better than digital ones for movement here. I suppose it depends on how finicky some of the later stages get.

Either way, PC Demo plzkthx.

I was excited about Mirror's Edge until I realized it was a first person platformer. I have always sucked at platformers.

I do, however, plan on getting the soundtrack. I just found out yesterday it's by my favorite electronic musician, Magnus Birgersson (AKA Solar Fields (http://www.solarfields.com/)).

Not really. I get carsick as fuck when I'm riding shotgun, but if I drive I don't notice it at all, too focused on the drive.

As for Nic Endo, meh. Miki Berenyi's the hotter hapa chick.

Oh, and the game's pretty good so far...

Miki Berenyi

Huge fan of Lush.  It's a shame Miki got out of the music business after they broke up.

I've been playing Mirror's Edge for about 2 or 3 hours now, so I figure I could give it a mini-review.

The Good
- Cityscape is beautiful
- Soundtrack, when played, fits the game perfectly. Has an open air feel to it.

The Bad
- There's not enough good about this game
- Combat is clumsy and almost impossible to manage
- Mastery of the moves is necessary otherwise...
- Lack of fluidity in the game because sometimes thinking on the fly isn't possible
- What I've come to call load-kill. Loading at key points can really break up the pacing and kill the intensity of a chase
- Elevators. Did you hate Mass Effect's Elevators? Even Stormwaltz could make fun of Mirror's Edge elevators.
- Hidden QTEs. Remember disarming in training? It's a masked QTE necessary for certain "scenes" in the game.
- Too much time spent inside buildings, sewers and tunnels. Layouts are bland.
- Some things thrown in just to make you use the moves.

Bad Things That Shouldn't Matter: If the game had of kept any of its promises, these two things wouldn't have mattered. Since the game doesn't deliver, they matter and flop on both accounts. I'm 2-3 hours in and already half way through the game.
- Terrible Storyline
- Short

Summary: I wanted to like Mirror's Edge so much. I kept playing in the hopes that there was one level that would instantly rectify the horrible atrocity that had been done to what was supposed to be a parkour style free running game. There in lies the problem with Mirror's Edge though, there isn't any free running to be seen. Sure, there are a couple ways you can tackle each situation, but overall it's heavily on rails and often times in a very frustrating manner. There's a reason why they only showed the training and select scenes of the game, it hid the fact that they were selling you an idea that you would inherently make up to be something else (free running parkour), but in the end just offer a new twist on the same old FPS style game.

Verdict: Rent.

No, I intended for it to be here. I can put it as a BIIF, but didn't think it had enough to be put there.

Never listen to Strazos. He is neither we nor 'judge' or what qualifies.

You basically had all the information normally contained in a BiiF with 5 minutes of work cleaning it up it could've been enough, but really doesn't matter. What's posted is posted, it's not like we have door prizes or anything.

I'm in the opposite camp. I dig the shit out of it halfway through. I got a little frustrated at one point having to load the same save point over and over, 'cause there were cops who would light me up before I even got a chance to move off a platform, but otherwise, I'm having loads of fun. I've yet to shoot anyone but I have butt-stroked a few dozen cops with their own rifles and shotguns and that shit is just awesome.

I will agree that having a mastery of the moves is key and that that only comes with time, but once you get that down, this game is gravy.

I'll also agree on the too short, as in Portal short, but I don't have a problem with that as of yet.

Portal was essentially free. I paid for TF2.

What's pissing me off most is that you're almost constantly put under pressure. Always some faggot NPC chopper or cops shooting at you. Often enough, the way to go isn't obvious, trying to figure it out gets you killed, possibly putting you back to a load screen. Not only that, but it also sucks the fun out of it.

Has anyone done time trials? I was wondering if they had the cops in them or if it was just free running. Might be the closest I get to the game I wanted.

I think the greatest thing I've gotten from this game so far is the music, namely the theme song. First time buying music online :drill:

Heh, if you pre-ordered the demo from Best Buy, you got a soundtrack CD too.

I'm three quarters of the way through and I've yet to shoot a cop, though there've been a few times I was sorely tempted.... goddamn machine guns.

Yeah, or just avoiding the ones I can run from.

The boat was a pain until I got used to kicking the machine gunners in the nuts and then running behind them and taking their guns while they were dazed.
