Title: So freakin' cool....
Post by: SnakeCharmer on April 13, 2008, 08:40:57 AM
Been trying to find a totally self contained dvd projector to use in the backyard against a sheet (or whatever), and stumbled across this (http://www.openaircinema.us/info/cinebox/pact_show/id_19385223/).  If I had 15,000 to burn, I would order that thing right now.

I'd place this piece of furniture has the "start giving more to charity" threshold.

I don't own a projector.  That said, couldn't you just get one on its own and find a much cheaper, roughly analogous piece of lightweight, white, flat material?

Yea, that's an overpriced waste of money.

The sound of the blower fan running to keep the screen from going flaccid during an entire movie would make me want to murder someone.

We've done a number of outdoor movie nights for the kids and their friends. One of my crappy laptops into a $700 projector against a white sheet we got from Linens and Things has been fantastic. But we're not talking Return of the King in HD either :)

That's probably what I am going to end up doing.  I can't find the solution I want, so it's looking that's the way I'm going to go.

I think I've seen DVD players built into projectors at one point. However, I prefer to separate my technologies as much as possible. Easier to replace one component in a total system than hafta replace the whole system for the failure of one part.

Actually the 16 x 9 foot one is 15 grand, and its a complete system including projector, DVD player, speakers and all. The 9 x 5 foot one is under ten grand. You can buy the smallest screen and blower alone for under $2500. When there's a waiting list to buy a $100,000 record player (http://www.continuumaudiolabs.com/caliburn.html) (does not include arm or cartridge), its really just small change for the big boys.

We use a projector hooked into our cable box as a TV, it's projected onto some white sheets we stretched across a 110" frame made of 1x2s, and it works great.

Theres also some relatively cheap specialty paint called goo or somesuch that is supposed to be super awesome for use with projectors, and at under $100 for a small jar it beats the shit out of several grand for a screen.

It's a crappy projector too, but it still looks great, it's not HD, but oh fucking well, its 110"!

I could see this as being a cool toy for a school, youth center, or hotel even. If I was rich though, I'd build a room around my entertainment system....as rich people are wont to do.
