Title: Let's rename Pluto
Post by: Sky on April 04, 2008, 06:14:26 AM
Ok. Pluto is demoted. Minor Planet or whatever it is these days. While the name Pluto was good while it was a planet, and spawned all kinds of cool scifi, I think it's time for a change.

Since it's a little dangly bit just outside of Uranus, I've decided it should be called Dingleberry.

Let's start a petition!

I think it's a Dwarf Planet now. And, I second Dingleberry.

Did that actually succeed?  I thought they decided against demoting Pluto because it irked us common lay people's wrath.

I have to go with renaming it the same thing that greenpeace whale was named: Mr. SplashyPants.  I don't care if it doesn't make sense, that name just makes me happy and I want to hear more of it.

The general consensus is that if the International Astronomers Union adopts an idea, then that's the facts. Or something.

It's a planetesimal (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Planetesimal).

I say call it Muninn.

Firstly, that billboard has the scale entirely wrong even if you assume it won't shed mass as it nears the sun (which it will).

Secondly, IT'S A DANGLY BIT JUST OUTSIDE URANUS.

Dingleberry, end of story.

Does it get closer to Uranus than Neptune?

I do like your joke but I'm derailing your derail.

It's orbit is eccentric, so it depends upon the century, but yes.

I think we should name it bluto and give it a head, arms and legs.

Let's name it Somnus.  Minor deity, fits a planetesimal.

we should name it gamespot.com.

because like Pluto not really being a planet, gamespot really isn't any sort of journalistic endeavor.

You guys are being mean. Pluto just got demoted and now you're suggesting insult names? How would you like it if you were renamed something demeaning whenever you were demoted or fired?

L-R: Pluto, Neptune, Uranus. Neptune & Uranus are "cousins" (lesbians).

The director of the first three seasons of Sailor Moon then went on to direct a little series called "Revolutionary Girl Utena"
I may have mentioned it once or twice in the anime thread here.

If you saw the US version, you wouldn't have known.. thus why Simond put "cousins" in quotes.  They altered it for US audiences, because we're afraid of sex and joy and happiness.

What's difficult to get about a cross-dressing, pink-haired girl fighting a series of duels in an arena on top of a gigantic spiral staircase below an inverted, spinning castle hanging in the sky against a series of opponents with the prize of possessing the Rose Bride (another girl) and the Power To Bring The World Revolution! Also roses. And lesbians. And incest. And swords. And other phallic objects. And roses (again).

I was just coming here to suggest Mr. Splashypants, but I see that I'm not needed here.

And why is Helm getting US exports of Japanese cartoons in Germany?  Does Japan have an anime embargo on Germany?

Title: Re: Let's rename Pluto
Post by: Sky on April 07, 2008, 06:22:30 AM
Why are a couple people taking this seriously. I was just watching a show on Pluto and thought "hey, it's a little dangly bit just outside Uranus, it should be named Dingleberry!" It's a stupid joke.

Mr Splashypants people show the utter lack of creativity as they follow the retarded internet hive mind. But it's better than taking my joke seriously, I guess.

I'll just stop making threads.

That's the best synopsis of Utena I have ever read.

Title: Re: Let's rename Pluto
Post by: Merusk on April 07, 2008, 08:30:48 AM
Here I was figuring something closer to, "They didn't translate SM into German, so Helm had to choose between learning Japanese to watch it or just picking up the US dubbed versions."

Little did I suspect that Mr. Splashypants (aka Pluto) had been struggling to keep lesbianism and cathode ray tubes out of the hands of the 5th Reich. Little did he suspect he'd be defeated by a phallus-wielding crossdresser in some Escher-realm, thus bringing television to Germany.

Title: Re: Let's rename Pluto
Post by: Jeff Kelly on April 07, 2008, 08:31:17 AM
Although seriousness might be a waste in this thread a little explanation.

Most japanese anime is produced in two forms, the japanese version (with schoolgirl lesbians and stuff) and - if it is successful - a western version that is recut and resubbed to be sold in the US (without schoolgirl lesbians and stuff).

The western version is then sold to all the other significant western markets (e.g. Europe).

So if we Europeans at some time do not seem to like you Americans much it's not because of something as trivial as cultural imperialism or foreign policy. It's because you are responsible for the lack of schoolgirl lesbians and stuff here in Europe. :awesome_for_real:

For that, I must humbly apologize. No nation should have the power to deprive someone of schoolgirl lesbians.

Oh, I thought about it.

I had also just gotten out of a meeting about how we can't say things to people because of fucking liability, so if a woman is ignoring her screaming kids while she's being a myspace zombie, we pretty much just have to let it go. I fucking hate myspace zombies, especially those that ignore their kids. My favorite was one winner who turned her kid's stroller away, and when he didn't stop asking her stuff, pushed the stroller away. Another one (yesterday, cause of the meeting), the kid was saying "I love you mommy" and the woman actually looked away from myspace long enough to say "I'm not your fucking mommy"

Working with the public....it kills the soul a little each day.

Anyway, I do have something against lesbians. They don't like my penis! What's up with that?  :awesome_for_real:

Sooooo, Pluto is a pluton?

http://www.iau.org/iau0601_Q_A.435.0.html (http://www.iau.org/iau0601_Q_A.435.0.html)

Quote
Q: Is a “pluton” a planet?

A: Yes.

Q: Is Pluto a “pluton”?

A: Yes.

Q: Is Pluto a planet?

A: Yes. In fact, Pluto’s large companion named Charon is also large enough and massive enough to satisfy the definition of “planet”. Because Pluto and Charon are gravitationally bound together, they are actually now considered to be a “double planet.”

Q: Is Pluto a dwarf planet?

A: If one describes any planet smaller than Mercury as a “dwarf planet”, then Pluto could be called a dwarf planet. Note that in terms of an IAU definition, Pluto is a “pluton.” “Dwarf planet” is simply a descriptive category like “terrestrial planet” and “giant planet.” None of these descriptive categories are formally defined by the IAU.

Let's just call it Bizarro.

Draft Resolution 5 for GA-XXVI: Definition of a Planet (http://www.iau.org/iau0601_resolution.432.0.html)

That's a pre-convention draft, not the final resolution.  Note the Press Release (http://www.iau.org/iau0601.424.0.html)'s date of Aug 16.

Wiki links: 2006 Definition of a planet - Draft Proposal (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2006_definition_of_planet#Draft_proposal) (what you quoted) and final definition (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2006_definition_of_planet#Final_definition) (what they actually passed a week later).

So they're thinking about giving in to the complaints and letting Pluto technically be a "planet", but not actually be called a "planet", because it's a "pluton" and that's different.  But, you know, it's still a planet.  Technically.

Why did the phrase "civil union" just pop into my head?
