Title: Prey - Human Head Studios - PC
Post by: Samwise on April 01, 2008, 07:16:11 PM
I'm about four hours in and having a blast.  It's a solid FPS with some nice shiny and some good gameplay gimmicks.  The story isn't bad, the weapons are weird and fun to shoot, resource management is minimized in favor of running and gunning, and it's even got a nice classic rock soundtrack in some areas, with a cameo by Art Bell.

It was $5 on Steam last weekend, so if you didn't buy it then, sucks to be you, but it's bound to come around again, right?  Still worth the regular $20 price if you've got a hankering for some single player FPS action RIGHT NOW.  And if you're on the fence, there's a demo you can play to whet your appetite.

Buy it.

Damn, I missed it for $5. I played the demo when it first came out, not knowing a thing about it. I thought it was just going to be some first-person bangbang kinda game. Then OMG aliens??? Then OMGWTF SPIRITWARRIOR?!?!?!?! It was like the awesome didn't stop.

Same.  I'm glad I knew absolutely nothing about the plot going into it.

Prey had the best opening bit since Deus Ex.

It's a decent game.  I wouldn't have paid much more than five dollars for it myself from what I've played of it so far (mind you I'm not a huge fan of FPS's to begin with).  I think the level layout is pretty nice, with the wall walking stuff and all that.  Those who think Bioshock has too light of a penalty for dying likely won't be too fond of this game either, as death is a momentary setback.

The game could also use a bit of variety in the enemies you fight, as well as some of the puzzle elements (which typically just amount to "shift in spirit form here and go press that switch").  The premise is an original one though, which is nice at least.  Can't say I've ever seen Native American's abducted by aliens before, so it gets some points there.  The gameplay is nothing particularly new or exciting, but the setting is creepy enough to compel me to play through it.

It started out with a cool opening sequence and went downhill quickly. I just found the game boring and not at all engaging. I sort of liked the characters but the gameplay was very repetitive even with the cool wall walking stuff added in. They took an awesome premise and turned it into a mini-puzzle game with the exact same puzzles over and over. I sold it back to help finance another game I wanted.

I bought the game when it first came out. Fun game, but it did need a bit of "some thing else". Also, that part near the end where you are flying in the ship really drags on and on and on and on. Also, the spirit world dying thing made the game not have any real consequence to dying. Your only real worry on hard fights was running out of ammo.

Dying in most games hasn't had much consequence since the invention of the quicksave, and I can't say I think it's a bad thing.  Having "consequence" to death sounds like it might be a good idea until you realize that the "consequence" is just playing the same level over again.  I'll take the spirit-hunting minigame instead kthx.

The real problem with it is on boss fights or hard monsters. Cause you can just whittle the mob down, die, come back, do a little more damage, die, come back, etc. Should at least make you restart the battle, or room your clearing IMO.

If you really want that experience, you can always quickload each time you find yourself in the spirit realm.

When I first played the demo about year ago (or something like that, I don't remember) I was pretty amazed. When it appeared on Steam for only five dollars, I snatched it up. Only to be disappointed. I guess I've just come to expect more from an FPS. The character models could have used a lot of work, the game play was trite and uninspired. I just wasn't amazed. Sure, the game was fun and everything. It's just no Half-Life 2.

Call me spoiled :p

I weep for people for whom a game being fun isn't enough anymore. You should play more MMOS, then you would appreciate fun for the rare commodity that it is.

ah yes. I was playing Rohan: Blood Feud MMO the other day and I was kinda crushed by the grind at Lv 30+ , so I was ready to quit (it's around midnight I have work tomorrow). Then my friend told me 'Have u tried fishing?'

:uhrr: I was too sleepy to argue and said 'ok'

Man what a weird , simple, yet fun carrot & stick game. Premise: You wager a gear (usually a piece you don't need/mind losing) and fish out 'something else' by stopping a bouncing arrow on the 'Green Zone' The first time the music played and the counter popped out as my character grunts with his fishing rod I just burst out laughing. It was too weird having fun in a Korean Grind MMO but there I was burning 2 hours and 2 dozen worth of trash loot I was supposed to sell on 'fishing'

Then I realized it's 2 AM and I was having fun.  :ye_gods:

Picked this up last year and played through it in like a week. Loved it. I think it strayed a little from where it was headed, (The dead kids on the schoolbus?) but it stayed fun.
