Title: Ubi planning Tom Clancy MMO Post by: Venkman on March 21, 2008, 07:52:02 AM Source (http://play.tm/story/16901) (there are a few, all saying roughly the same)
Quote Next-Gen.biz report that Ubisoft chief Yves Guillemot is plotting to take the Clancy brand online, via a new MMOG. "We've really decided now to go for an MMO on the Clancy name, which is big..." Guillemot is quoted as stating, the exec hinting that the new game could be in development now, or just commencing. Quote Guillemot moots development costs of 40 to 50 million USD, and a release time-scale has yet to be hinted. Likewise platforms. More soon. Does "moot" in this case mean the point is moot in that it'll be 40-50mil USD? Or is moot here some odd way of saying "no way it'll cost 40-50mil USD?Whatever the case, not sure how interesting this'll be. I never did get into the Clancy stuff because one 5 minute period I gave to one title felt like a really laborious FPS. I'm probably way wrong about that but haven't been bothered to go back to the series. Anyone who is into that stuff care to speculate on how an MMO would work? Title: Re: Ubi planning Tom Clancy MMO Post by: Miasma on March 21, 2008, 08:16:33 AM That article clearly wasn't written by someone who is comfortable with the English language, "moot" had to be a mistake.
Title: Re: Ubi planning Tom Clancy MMO Post by: UnSub on March 21, 2008, 08:28:14 AM I'm taking "moots" to mean "how the hell should I know? We only just signed the deal! You're meant to be getting excited by the mere thought of Tom Clancy's Ghost Splinter Net Online!".
Title: Re: Ubi planning Tom Clancy MMO Post by: Surlyboi on March 21, 2008, 08:32:27 AM How the fuck would that work?
Title: Re: Ubi planning Tom Clancy MMO Post by: LK on March 21, 2008, 08:34:33 AM It's not going to be MMO, that's for sure. If there is a persistant game-space, it's going to be something along the lines of Chromewarriors or what Battlefield Heroes is planning.
Title: Re: Ubi planning Tom Clancy MMO Post by: WayAbvPar on March 21, 2008, 08:39:02 AM I loved his early stuff, then I realized that all his characters were two dimensional cowboys. A fully integrated Red Storm Rising might be really fun.
Title: Re: Ubi planning Tom Clancy MMO Post by: Viin on March 21, 2008, 09:47:06 AM It would be nice to see a game on something other than R6 and Splinter Cell. What about all those other books?
Edit: Maybe a Net Force game? Hmm.. Title: Re: Ubi planning Tom Clancy MMO Post by: Daeven on March 21, 2008, 10:23:49 AM Red Storm Online? Hmm.
Title: Re: Ubi planning Tom Clancy MMO Post by: NiX on March 21, 2008, 10:24:22 AM R6 done right could be pretty damn awesome. Instanced scenarios with something like two 4-man Rainbow teams VS 8 terrorists. TWITCH!
Though I agree it's time for Ubi to start looking elsewhere for game ideas. The last Splinter Cell (Sinpleplayer) wasn't that great. Title: Re: Ubi planning Tom Clancy MMO Post by: LK on March 21, 2008, 10:34:06 AM Rainbow as a concept does not work in a multiplayer setting as well as other games like Call of Duty. You never stack up on a door and flash a room because terrorists are protecting hostages in Rainbow, for example. The enemy knows you're coming, every time, and has just as much skill and tactics as you do. Rainbow's advantages are stealth entries and elimination of unsuspecting, oblivious, poor aiming terrorists that does not put the rest of the terrorists on alert. The whole "I can see around corners without exposing myself or letting the enemy know I'm there in most cases" in a FPS is a huge problem. It's like the difference of PVE vs. PVP in WoW. Rainbow is a good PvE implementation but a poorer PvP implementation.
But I'm sort of pegging at what is still an OK experience. Just prefer a multiplayer experience that better emphasizes what the online experience is going to be like. Title: Re: Ubi planning Tom Clancy MMO Post by: Slyfeind on March 21, 2008, 11:34:08 AM I doubt they're really planning an MMO. More like they're planning one of those "$15 a month thingies" that all the cool cats are talking about. I swear, everything's going to cost $15 a month in the near future. Even Cheetos. Maybe not gasoline.

I feel that. :uhrr: Title: Re: Ubi planning Tom Clancy MMO Post by: Signe on March 21, 2008, 02:20:41 PM I tried reading one of his books once. I don't think I made it past the first couple of chapters. He is awful.

Quote Verb to moot (third-person singular simple present moots, present participle mooting, simple past and past participle mooted) 1. To bring up as a subject for debate, to propose. 2. To discuss or debate. 3. (US) To make or declare irrelevant. First meaning. Title: Re: Ubi planning Tom Clancy MMO Post by: DarkSign on March 21, 2008, 07:34:52 PM I'm in flavor of this.
