Title: Smash Brothers Brawl comment thread
Post by: Triforcer on March 01, 2008, 04:24:44 PM
Gamestop's prelaunch event-

http://www.gamestop.com/gs/ssbb/tournament/default.asp?cookie%5Ftest=1&

If one of you Bostonites goes to the Cambridgeside Galleria location for this, I may see you and be completely owned by you.  One more week!!

P.S. Anyone who fags this thread up with snarky anti-Wii comments can die and choke on dick.  In that order.

I've got my preorder in at one of the midnight-release Gamestops nearby.  Melee was one of the best games EVAR, so I'm very much looking forward to Brawl.

I can't wait myself. It's about fucking time.

So how many of you kids are participating in the cool guy tourneys?

As a GS employee, I am barred from playing. :|

So what's the release date on this?

SUNDAY, SUNDAY, SUNDAY

At least that's what Circuit City told my wife.  I find it odd it's not Tuesday.

Ya, I looked it up after posting.  Sunday.  So strange.  And very sad, it means that I have to slog through the peoples to get a copy and only get to enjoy it a bit instead of the OMGWEEKEND I was going to have with it.

Was this suppose to have online?

I thought it was Saturday?  Eek.  I think that's what I told my kid, who's been talking about this for months.

Got it home about 3 hours ago after me and a friend grabbed it from a deserted Wal-Mart at midnight. My friend just left, and we're really liking it so far.

Impressions:
-I dunno why people keep saying it feels like original Smash + Melee. Basically, imagine melee without the directional airdodging and about half the falling speed. This makes the game spend a LOT more time in the air. The lack of direction airdodging is going to fuck you up, as well as adjusting to how slow it feels. It feels really slow after playing lots of melee, but you can get used to it.

-Online play is kinda...laggy. Not awful HL1 client-correction ghosty shit, just like playing smash underwater.

Characters:

Ike: Basically Ganondorf with a sword. Good reach, obscene power, ponderously slow.

Olimar: Useless without Pikmin, kinda useless still with them.

Wario: Pretty good but predictibly goofy. Faster and stronger than he looks.

Dedede: Bit slower than Ike. His hammer hurts really, really, really bad on smashes. A clean side smash will nearly kill or kill any average character over 60%.

Samus: Feels pretty much exactly the same only the power missiles can't be fired quite as fast and can't be spammed due to the mechanic they added where repeated moves get weakened. Final Smash is really really powerful...leading to~

Zero Suit Samus: Pretty fast. All of her smashes are whip attacks with her weird gun thing. Her gun is useless when fired normally. Not a lot of finishing power.

Meta Knight: All of his normal attacks and smashes are really fast and ignoring the side smash are multi-hit. He's gonna be popular.

Pit: Feels like a bigger meta-knight since everything he does hits multiple times, only he has a lot more vertical climbing ability since he can float kirby style and his up-B is more flying. His over B is annoying since he screams "yayayaya!!!" and spins his blade in front of him as long as you mash the button. Will be obscenely popular.

Peach: Down Smash severely nerfed. ;_; whhhyyyyyy

Edit: Friend codes!

Still not out at the stores here.  Fucking snowstorm Friday/ saturday 15" here at my house. First time since 77! woot, real snowfall I missed Cleveland.   Of course this means everything closed-down yesterday as Cincy has NOT CLUE ONE about snow removal of this magnitude.  Ah well.

Perhaps it'll be out later today when the wife comes home.

Grabbed it no problem.  Walmart had about 20 of them.

Adventure is a game all by itself now.  Co-op, wacky sticker powerup system, bosses.

No more wave dashing.  yay!

Agree on Kid Icarus and Metaknight.  Good solid easy to use characters.  Edit:  Also Fox!

Lots of strange wacky item things happen.  LOTS of strange things.

Good stuff!  Go play.

I'm not enjoying it.  Game feels like molasses in terms of responsiveness, and the buttons feel very backwards in their arrangement.  I try jumping and doing a nice slash combo w/ Link and instead I get a run (pause) jump straight up (pause) slash slash.  I know it's not the remote dying on me, because I replaced the batteries last night.

It's also very apparent that it was meant to be a 'cube game, but got delayed way too long.  It makes no use of the unique features of the wiimote.  When the kids are done playing I'm going to see if I can plug-in one of the old 'cube controllers to work with it instead.

Well, that's one way to look at it. I prefer to think that the Wiimote is not the optimal controller for every game on the Wii. Sometimes it makes sense to bust out the classic control pad (or even a wavebird.) Personally I think they made the right choice here, given exactly how many people prefer to play their fighting games on a traditional pad.

I'd be complaining if I felt that I had to use blocky uncomfortable Wiimote turned sideways because otherwise I couldn't shake the controller and make Pitt fly.

Tried with a nunchuk?  Supposedly much better.

Also, Wavebird (http://www.amazon.com/Gamecube-Wavebird-Wireless-Controller-Platinum/dp/B00005BOSF)?  Ouch!  Those gouging bastards.

Maybe the MadCatz one (http://www.madcatz.com/Default.asp?Page=196&CategoryImg=GameCube_Controllers) isn't crap?

Had a bunch of fun with this one today. I'm all over Marth and Ike. I am such a Riposte whore.

Also, Sonic's super move is...obscene.

This game is meant to be played with a gamecube controller but unfortunately Nintendo stopped producing them. Hopefully they'll start up again since Brawl is such a sensation.

Me and my friends prepared for this day long ago by owning several dozen new cube controllers between us all.

I haven't gotten to play as much as I would like, I've only unlocked Captain Falcon and Ness.

Also the online sucks. Thanks Nintendo!

Been doing mostly multiplayer with some single player thrown in, and so far it's pretty much precisely what I expected and wanted: Prettier Melee with more characters and some new stuff.  In my opinion, the wiimote control isn't as good as the old Wavebird; I'm using the classic controller attachment and it works dandy.

I was playing with the nunchuck and that was my complaint.  I switched it over to the gamecube controller earlier this evening.  Gameplay improved and frustration level dropped 100%.  Now I'm having fun  :drill:

Really, it NEEEDS the old 'cube controller.

I cracked out on it last weekend after enduring the midnight launch thing at my local GS.  Meta-Knight = luv, though he lacks KO power imo.

It's somewhat hilarious that the best game on the Wii is best experienced by avoiding wholly the system's raison d'etre.

My 11 year old was at the local game store for the midnight launch (with his dad).  He played in the tournament (got his butt kicked by the college kids), but he got to pick up his game before those not in the tournament.

He's been playing it nonstop, pretty much - every time I venture toward the wii, he warns me off, saying it'll make my hands hurt too much.  What a sweet boy, trying to protect me like that.  Or is he?

No it'll really make your hands hurt if you play too much. Even with Brawl being a bit slower it's still a hand-mangler.

Not much of a surprise I guess, but some U.S. sales figures: (http://biz.yahoo.com/prnews/080317/lam097.html?.v=101)

Quote
REDMOND, Wash., March 17 /PRNewswire/ -- After just one week on store shelves, Super Smash Bros.® Brawl for Wii has become the fastest-selling video game in Nintendo of America's history. Since its launch on March 9, the feature-packed fighting action game has sold more than 1.4 million units in the United States, including more than 874,000 on March 9 alone. It has sold at a rate of more than 120 units per minute between launch and March 16.

So between U.S. and JP sales so far it's already sold around 3 million.

I've never owned any of the Smash games, so from a total nub, having played it for a couple hours last night...

I haven't quite figured out the controls, mostly I only get the tap direction+A attack sometimes and I often find myself not attacking in the left/right direction I wanted to be attacking in.

I also realized towards the end of the play session that I really ought to block a bit more and I hadn't figured out where it tells you how high your power meter or whatever it is that determines if you can do the super-super move is.

There are a fuckton of items, its cool but right now often confusing.

Some stages are so great, I think it was Wario's stage where it was like some kind of acid trip with crazy shit going on.  I need to play that on a much longer game like say 6 min instead of 2.

I checked Gamefaqs to see how many unlockables there are, fucking awesome how many more characters they give you.  Plus I love how many pallette swaps they have for the characters.

I played about an hour waiting for roommates to get home versus the computer on L4 difficulty using random characters.  I could not figure out for the life of me how to use some of them:

Yoshi:  How exactly are all the egg related attacks supposed to work?  Also his basic attacks are pretty trashy t/f?

King Diddy (the kirby enemy):  God damn he sucks, I mean the hammer attacks dont work well it seems and I couldn't even figure out his other stuff.  I didn't have a good enough grip on the game to use any of the slow guys well, except Donkey Kong but this guy was by far the worse.  At least Bowser and Wario can lay some hurt, though I don't get the motorcycle at all.

I'm totally clueless to the existing metagame so I'm going to play a little and unlock everybody while I try to figure all this out.  I may try to get my hands on a wavebird...

After checking that amazon link, whats the catch here? (http://cgi.ebay.com/2-ORANGE-CONTROLLERS-FOR-NINTENDO-GC-GAMECUBE-WII-NEW_W0QQitemZ160219768069QQihZ006QQcategoryZ41042QQrdZ1QQssPageNameZWD7VQQcmdZViewItem?_trksid=p1638.m123) looks like 2 GC controllers brand new for under $30?

They're 3rd party controllers - the same ones are sold on Amazon here (http://www.amazon.com/Vista-Gaming-Products-Inc-CY-222/dp/B000IOFM0G/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&s=videogames&qid=1205868686&sr=1-5) for around $10 each including shipping.

There's also the first-party controllers here (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0002Y5180/sr=1-1/qid=1205868686/ref=noref?ie=UTF8&s=videogames&qid=1205868686&sr=1-1) for $25.

Ah thanks for the catch, I have had bad exp w/ 3rd party controllers so forget that.  What's wrong with the wii classic controller esp with that grip that makes it look a great deal like the ps2 controller?

Another controller question after seeing how bad they are gouging for wireless wavebirds, wired ones work fine with wii t/f?

Everything about the Wii Classic Controller is made for Wee Baby Hands. Including the analog sticks. All of the Wii controllers are the opposite of The Duke.

To do the super super moves you need to hit one of the glowing ball things that appears from time to time and floats around in the air.

Post by: Hoax on March 18, 2008, 03:23:57 PM
Oh no shit, that explains so much.  Your good at this sort of shit though Margalis, why does Yoshi suck such salty balls?

Also thx on the small hands protip Schild, I have girly slender fingers (+4 finger DEX) but I don't think my overall hand size would work for babyhand controls.  Too bad really, I remember not liking the Gamecube controller at all on GC so I really would rather not buy one for fucking $60...

Then again, every SSBB guide/faq I read mentions triggers, which the wiimote doesn't have, so like, it sounds like there isn't much choice.

Title: Re: Smash Brothers Brawl comment thread
Post by: Merusk on March 18, 2008, 03:41:17 PM
It really, really, really, REALLY improves gameplay to have a 'cube controller.  They don't sell old used ones separately at your local game stores?

For example, on the 'cube controller all your attacks and the jump button at your right thumb with your blocking controlled by either forefinger and 'grab' is your right forefinger. (z button)  Smashes are on the yellow directional toggle.

On the Wiimote it's one attack on the right thumb, one on the right forefinger, blocking with the right forefinger (or index finger if you can fit both beside each other) and two attacks that require double button presses. (Smash is thumbstick + A, grapple is A + B)

The wiimote controls are fucking cumbersome, if you ask me.  At the very VERY least pick-up the 'classic' controller (wii accessory) which uses the same setup as the cube, but is a much smaller controller.

I haven't played too much and not at all as Yoshi, so I can't say what's wrong with him.

The Thrustmaster Wavebird replacement (http://www.thrustmaster.com/products.aspx?CategoryID=5&PlatformID=10) is pretty solid, though it's kinda small (not that Wavebirds and 1P GC controllers aren't).  If wires aren't an issue, I'd buy the 1P controller from Amazon.  If you'd prefer wireless (and not getting raped pricewise), pick up the TM pad (though 3 AAAs as power is kinda odd).

Post by: Hoax on April 17, 2008, 11:42:14 AM
So I've been playing a bit of this...

Characters I am good with:
Peach - no idea why, I can usually dominate with her even though timing the down+B is too hard to bother with.
Sonic - soo fast, his moves in the air are s3x, his spins are s3x, really enjoyable to play with.

Characters I am ok with:
Lucario - his moves just feel right, though I'm still not clear on the down+B & his damage output being so tied to damage taken is annoying.
Ice Climbers - they are chibi and fun, but just not that great it seems to me.
Lucas - I like playing as Lucas and can aim the thunder/ice moves well but I often hate his lack of recovery.

Characters I can sometimes do good things w/ but mostly struggle:
Marth - Slow enough that some rounds or some maps he gets dominated.
Metaknight - Hard to finish, also his moves are hard to control precisely and leave you open, he also seems to get ko'd at low damage levels often.

Characters I want to play but they suck ass:
Link - I can see how he could be great, but I can't use him.
Fox - Ditto + he's too damn fast and none of his basic moves really do much for me.  If I play really cherry picking I can pull some wins but that's not a ton of fun.
Zelda - I just haven't played her enough I think, plus the moves don't quite make "sense" to me intuitively like some characters.

Everyone else I never play as except when I get them via Random.  My house has one v.good Pikachu/Bowser player, one good King Dedede player & one decent Kirby player.  Though we pick up various other people some weekends and I've played a bit online but the wii hasn't picked up a great signal.

P.S.  Good comic.
