Title: Is this the first time...
Post by: Venkman on February 28, 2008, 09:16:36 AM
...a casual game has appeared in the Top 20 PC Games?

According to the GameDaily (http://www.gamedaily.com) daily email, these are the Top 20 PC titles for January 2008:

1. World Of Warcraft
2. Call Of Duty 4: Modern Warfare
3. World Of Warcraft: Battle Chest
4. World Of Warcraft: Burning Crusade
5. The Sims 2 Deluxe
6. Diner Dash
7. 15000 Games
8. The Sim City 4 Deluxe
9. The Sims 2 Teen Style Stuff
10. Crysis
11. The Sims 2 Bon Voyage
12. Half Life 2: Episode 2 The Orange Box
13. Battlefield 2
14. Warcraft III Battle Chest
15. Pirates Of The Burning Sea
16. Rock Tour Tycoon
17. Sim City 5: Societies
18. The Sims 2 Seasons
19. Age Of Empires III
20. Age Of Empires III: Asian Dynasties

I don't know what 15000 games is but assume it's a huge compilation of theme-wrapped public-domain game experiences. But it was Diner Dash that jumped out at me.

Assuming this is only PC retail sales, that means more Diner Dash CD-ROMs were sold in January than a whole bunch of other titles we'd play. Maybe it's one of those post-holiday things where the sheer glut of December is followed by lower-across-the-board sales where just about anything is possible? I don't have time right now to look for the actual sales figures to compare against December, but I assume they're there.

Fucking Sims 2.

When is it OK to completely generalize and say women have terrible taste?

I mean, do 50M copies have to sell first?

Chrikey.

The new castaway stories looks like it could have potential if it were more lost in blue, less sims.

I just want a damn Sid Meier's SimGolf remake with the new shiny engine.

Good to see POTBS up on that list of top 20, though.

Christ, #1 and 3 of the top 5 altogether are WoW?  In 2008?  Jesus!

Wait. Seriously, do gays like Sims 2? Is this a joke? I never ever would have put those two together.

And yet, it's so obvious.

Sims 2 removed some of the stupid relationship restrictions that Sims 1 had.  So now your guys have happy healthy gay marriage-type relationships.  And yes, I even know some Korean gaymers who love Sims 2 just for that.  When they're not playing Starcraft, natch.

Did you just say "gaymers?" YOU DID, I'M QUOTING IT.

Anyway, interesting. I wonder why I never thought of that before. Not the gaymers bit, the Sims bit.

Just another kind of fantasy fulfillment.  Some guys wanna be big strong orcs or sexy elf chicks...

Sometimes our fantasy is rather pedestrian by comparison.  No discrimination, have whatever job you want, get married and live together, be able to adopt with no more difficulty than others...

Escapism into what should be normality.

Hmm...it sounds less fun when I put it that way...

Also, we can create a whole bunch of guys that look like our fantasy dude and fuck them all.  Better for gaming?

Also, dollhouses and dollies for grown ups.

Maybe that's why WoW sells so well across the board. It's okay for guys to play with and dress up virtual dollies, as long as you get to kill virtual orcs at the same time.

A vivid illustration of how ill the PC game market is… …except for Blizzard…

…2-3+ year old games only broken up by the same old FPS dressed up with shinier displays…

Xerapis, you brought a slice of touching humanity to what should have been a pity party for the state of PC gaming.

Damn your gay ass.

Kidding, of course.

What, you mean like Tetris?

Did Tetris ever sell so well in box form to hit the Top 20 PC games list? I was serious about the thread title.

I think Bejeweled mighta gotten into the Top 10 at some point too, but I haven't had the time to look.

Sims 2 depresses me to no end. I felt like crying back then when I just graduated with a diploma trying so hard to find a job and living in a really messed up apartment with laundry piling up in my room. I was clicking around in the Sims 2 ...finished my Sims degree and voila, he's got a job. A swanky apartment, married a woman that pooled their resources to buy a fancy car in less than 3 hours.

I decided to uninstall it and lock the DVD somewhere before I commit suicide.

So you won't be checking back on March 19th for Sims 3 details? (http://thesims3.ea.com/)

You Don't Know Jack and Who Wants to be a Millionaire were both there back around 2000.  Back in 1999 I said at E3 that in 10 years MMO's would be the entire PC market for practical purposes.  They laughed at me, they *laughed*!  Who's laughing now, bitches?

I know green is sarcasm, what do we use for pure over the top snark?  I'm going with black, so you have to highlight it to see how I act when I'm off my meds.  Or is that when I'm on my meds?

Nope.

I want a persistent Sim City 2000 where everyone builds their cities attached to each other's and shares in recession, immigration, etc.

I've wanted that for a decade now. More than that, actually. More like around Sim City 1 I thought it would be fun if there were other people outside my borders.

Spore, unfortunately, will do no such thing.

I'm not sure how Sims online work, but the concept sounds more fun but strangely it is not popular compared to Sims Offline series.
'Hey guys check out my dollhouses and bring your ken to meet my barbie online' is not money hat?

Edit: wtf

EA Land (previously known as The Sims Online) is a massively multiplayer online game variation on Maxis' highly popular computer game The Sims. It was published by Electronic Arts and released on December 17, 2002 for Microsoft Windows.

On 27 February 2008 the original servers were shutdown and a new online world replaced called EA Land, now a free online game.

Yes, EA managed to fuck up the money hat maker that Sims Online should be. How did they do it?

They added a GRIND.
