Hello Kitty MMORPG goes beta (13-02-2008)

Sanrio Digital's ¡§Hello Kitty Online¡¨ accepting players for closed beta

Hong Kong ¡V February 13, 2008: Sanrio Digital (www.sanriodigital.com) today announced the closed beta launch of ¡§Hello Kitty Online¡¨, a Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game (MMORPG) based on the famous Sanrio characters. Hello Kitty Online allows players to explore and adventure in Sanrio¡¦s fantasy world, a magical land that has recently fallen under the influence of a mysterious and malevolent power.

Players for the closed beta version are invited to apply at the official game site (www.hellokittyonline.com) or community site (www.sanriotown.com) and experience Hello Kitty Online in advance of the game release expected in the second half of 2008. Targeting female players from their pre-teens to twenties, Hello Kitty Online is the first installable MMORPG to set its sights on this demographic profile.

Hello Kitty Online is fully integrated with official Sanrio portal Sanriotown.com, which utilizes blogs, email, video sharing, Sanrio merchandise sales and more to create a digital and social experience accessible at any time. Players of Hello Kitty Online can extend their game experience on Sanriotown.com by interacting with other players, purchasing upgrades for their in-game characters, etc.

In addition to the standard MMORPG features such as customizable avatars, guilds, skill systems, and player economy, some of the outstanding Hello Kitty Online features include:

* Unique game world: a persistent, beautifully designed environment where thousands of players and NPCs live, explore and quest in a magical world with real and imaginary zones such as the Flower Kingdom, Tokyo, Paris, Moscow, and more. Real world locations offer players the ability to learn about those places.

* Unique NPCs:players will encounter and interact with popular Sanrio characters such as Hello Kitty, Badtz-Maru, My Melody, Keroppi, and many others, all animated with a variety of contextual facial _expressions.

* Free to play: Hello Kitty Online is downloaded and played free of charge. There are no subscription fees.

* Character upgrades: the Item Mall allows players to use real money to purchase special items and upgrades for characters.

* Player housing: players can build and customize their own houses after acquiring the necessary licenses and materials. Houses depreciate over time and need to be maintained properly or will fall in disuse. A homeowner can invite someone to visit by making an in-game telephone call, and the player called will automatically be transported to the house if she agrees.

* Crafting system: Hello Kitty Online has an extensive crafting system with output such as tools & weapons, farming implements & furniture, a wide variety of cooked dishes, and clothing for decorative and stat-modifying items. Raw materials include wood, minerals and metals, and crops.

* Farming: players can run their own farms, which offer extra storage room and have the potential to produce important raw materials. The farming system incorporates a number of variables such as fertility, pest infestations, and crop characteristics.

* A different focus: although it has a sophisticated combat system, unlike other MMORPGs combat need not be a primary objective for players of Hello Kitty Online. There are many puzzles to be solved, mini-games to compete in, story lines to follow, and adventures to experience.

That depends on whether you're in the Kiddie faction, the Pedo faction, or the FBI faction.

Thank you for subscribing to Hello Kitty Online closed beta!

As much as we would like to accommodate all our subscribers, there are only a limited number of accounts to give out. We would like to pick best people to test the game, so this is your chance to tell us why you should be one of the chosen applicants. Here's how you can get an account:

   1. Create an account in SanrioTown.com and log-in.
   2. Go to Dream Studio and create a video answering the question "Why do you think you should be selected for the closed beta testing?"..
   3. The length of the video should be at least 15 seconds / 3 slides.
   4. Include "mmorpg" in the video's tags.
   5. After saving the video, use the "Send video" function at the lower right corner of the page. Input the email address that you've used to subscribe for the closed beta account in the "Personal message" field, and send it to mmorpg @ hellokitty.com.
   6. Multiple entries are allowed.

All submissions should be sent by 9 March 2008, 23:59 Hong Kong time. You can check out the Dream Studio tutorial (English / Chinese) for help on how to make your video. SanrioTown reserves the right to pick the earliest and best videos based on our own judgment.

SanrioTown reserves the right to pick the earliest and best videos based on our own judgment. Don't forget to check the Hello Kitty online game site and the official HKO blog for updates.

Hurry! The number of slots is really limited, so be sure to make those videos as soon as possible. Screening will run on a "first come first serve" basis, so don't miss out on this chance to get a closed beta account! Good luck!

Title: Re: Something cute this way comes (HK Online Beta)

wtf does this mean?
Sorry, it's "tits or gtfo" passed through 4chan meme bin  :oh_i_see:  Basically, while that video requirement might seem rather crazy, it's quite clever given that a) their target base is supposed to be young girls and b) number of pedo-bear fans the game is likely to draw as pointed earlier. So in this way they get at least vague confirmation the persons they pick for beta are actually their target demographics. Or something.

The problem is that pedophile jokes suddenly become a lot less funny when you have kids. For some people, they even become anti-funny.

On the other hand, if someone wants to put together a video where they pretend to be a pedophile and then, years later, have that video turn up on YouTube... now THAT's comedy.

Yes. I got that email about creating a video as well. I don't know that I'll do that because the game is not THAT important. Eventually, there'll be an open beta, or a trial client.

As for the "joke" video, I don't have children and I don't find it funny in the slightest. Why would anyone even joke about that?

Saturday Night Live pretty much did that in the sketch:

http://www.nbc.com/Saturday_Night_Live/segments/9166.shtml (http://www.nbc.com/Saturday_Night_Live/segments/9166.shtml)

Quote
A group of adults are at a class teaching them how to set up a MySpace page. Nancy admits that she’s there to find out what all the hullabaloo is about, but the rest of the class is made up of creepy men who are very curious about whether or not they can lie about their ages on MySpace.

The teacher, Danny, checks out what the guys in the class are doing and sees that many of them are lying about their ages to make themselves appear to be teenagers. One of them names his profile “Naughty Girls Hotstuff” and Danny warns him that he’s going to get a lot of teenage boys approaching him online. “Oh, I don’t want that,” the guy nervously says.

Sorry about that I didn't intend to offend.  To answer honestly I suppose what I would find amusing about the situation is the reaction of a group of adults looking through videos of young girls who want into a hello kitty MMO and then runs across a video of some pervy old dude trying to get in.  I'm not sure why I find that amusing, but I do.

Funny thing about HKO is, everyone in the industry keeps talking about integrating social networking into their games. What they are doing with HKO and sanriotown.com is light years ahead of most. And yet, nobody is talking about them.

Not that I've signed up or anything. ;)

Unless a MMO is grim and gritty with realistic physics and all your friends are playing it, it doesn't count as a MMO.

Calandryll is spot on - light years. How HKO have integrated social networking into their game is fantastic. While most big mmoRPGs are focusing on simple social stuff such as guilds and guild management, HKO is one step ahead. And the HK fans will love it I bet. I love the super happy fun stamps I can put in my HK emails - I think I will start using for my EVE Online corp correspondence.

Now, we'll see about the game itself - I really don't want to grind starfish all day long, but that's just me  :geezer:

Shit. I said shit a lot in that post.

All of the original 20,000 founder accounts are full and they plan on making more because of such high demand.

Also, there's a website called TenTonHamster.com

I told my wife that I signed up for HKO and I think it cost me some sex.

Well, you'll be able to make up for that on HKO

Who is playing this?

I just downloaded the client and started it.

Clicky clicky clicky.  Lots of mouse there.  I have a quest to gather 30 rare items.  Stand and click.

This is for kids, or seriously OCD people?

I play it sometimes.  My name is HelloSigne, of course.  So far, it really does appeal especially to my OCD side.  It's fun from time to time and cute all the time.

I thought I was going to get an email but apparently I'm supposed to stand in one spot and click-click-click until the page loads and I can get in.  I'll see about giving it a shot tonight.

My name is no longer HelloSigne, it's Trouble.  I deleted my character in a fit of mood.  I think I'm almost ready to play games that entail reflexes again.  Thankfully.

Wait, what?

Which game entails reflexes?

DO NOT GO BACK TO HELLGATE

I miss Hellgate.  What I mean by "reflexes" is a game where when I'm the healer or something and I have to stop moving my hand, everyone doesn't die.  Something like that, nothing twitchy - just consistent movage.

You enjoying being the ultimate source of the fate of others?  Or you get bored real quick?

Maybe that wasn't a good example.  What I mean is that until my hand is sorted out properly, it gets hurty and tired easily and I'd probably watch everyone, including me, die in a game rather than help them if it meant more hurtiness to my hand which could be entertaining until someone shouted at me and kicked me from the group which would piss me off and I'd quit the guild and later someone would apologise and I'd apologise back and we'd get all teary-eyed and sentimental and start reminiscing about stuff and I hate when that happens.  Srsly.

Despite really loving Diablo 2, I didn't play it that much and that's why.

The Horadric cube and gem gathering was one of the most brilliant ideas in a game yet.  I'd play just to find more gems to put together.

To get this back to topic - maybe HKO will incorporate the idea!
