Title: Now Taking Your Bets... (FFXI)
Post by: LK on February 11, 2008, 05:40:22 PM
I'm going to pick up FFXI for Xbox360.  $40 for the game and all 4 expansions.

Now taking your bets for when I quit in a fit of rage!

If there's some good group of people that wants a new player, I'd like to know.

Actually, with a controller, the UI may not be so bad. I never picked this up because the 25 minutes i played it at some E3 long ago because that was all the time I ever needed to put into such an awful UI. But I was trying it on a PC,

I don't belong to any real group but I'm on Ramuh if you want a buddy, a bit of help or a small cash infusion.

I haven't been logging on too often recently, been busy, but I can log on if we plan in advance. Feel free to hit me up with questions via PM or whatever.

I would never play this, but I am curious...are there any references to Final Fantasy VI (III) in the game?  Kefka, any of the other characters, items, etc.?

Not really. It has some familiar enemies like bombs and cactuars and tonberries but that's really it.

I missed the announcement that FFXI was going to the Xbox 360. I'd be interested to know how many people play it via this console. Also, how well it plays at all.

EDIT: oh, and I give Lorekeep two weeks from subscription date to quitting time ;-)

It looks really nice on the 360 and it's made to play with a controller so it plays well.

Every time I start up the game it seems slower than I remember.

Oh, that's probably cause I'm playing WHM.

Need a keyboard...

You can play this on the 360?

How do you play an MMO without a keyboard?

I rather thought a USB keyboard was required to play. Not that I would ever play FFXI, I'm scared of where it would take me.

FF XI has a menu'd "chat" system with various common phrases. Those are also auto-translated.

I'm doing WHM for training as a healer and to get groups easier.  I think I'll sub ... BM? I want to try out Dancer and Scholar and all the other new classes.

My knowledge of the game is from 2003 though.  If there's something I can do to solo easier (isn't there, like, a buddy you can get? NPC? I thought I read that somewhere on this forum), then that'd be cool.

Dancer is a good solo class.

You can get an NPC buddy, think you have to be level 30, not sure. Google for "adenturing fellow" or "fellowship quest."

Based on that I'll give you six months.

Unless the cockupuncture gets to you, in which case I give you 3.

Prognosis: 3 - 6 months.

Can you still level down by losing xp when you die? If so, I bet Valkurm + 1 week.

If it helps, I quit for the first time at 44, then quit for the second time at 17 after dying twice in a row.  I was a warrior though.

Yes. It's pretty hard to die though...except in Valkurm. I normally solo up until level 15 or so, which means 3 or 4 levels of Valkurm only.

One thing that helps is that small groups are better now. For example in Valkurm I duod as a Dark Knight with a White Mage, it worked well. We got chain 3s on crabs without any real danger. Also dancer kicks ass in small groups, and there are a fair number of dancers around.

I thought that place immediately out of Jeuno was also lethal.

The one where you have to cross Lv. 35-40 mobs to get to the Lv. 25 ones? Quifim?

Edit: ANNNNNND...I deleted my character.  BUT! I'm restarting on a server with an old friend who has a good linkshell going on Midgardsormr.

Good thing I hadn't put any serious time in leveling my skills.  I think it's funny that I now have an activity to do while waiting for a group ... self-buffing for stats!

Still playing? I haven't logged on in about 2 months, been busy. Recent changes in latest update look pretty good, adenturing fellow (NPC helper) got a lot better.

On and off.  Interjecting Pirates into the mix before going back into it full time.  I'm currently a 20 WHM / 14 BLM.  Once I get BLM high enough for Warp it should be happy fun time, but the travel between cities is getting annoying.

Doing outpost quests helps a lot in that regard. Also keep your eyes open for special event items, recently I got items that teleported me to Windurst and Bastok, were very handy.

Oh, you're on Midgard now?  Damn, wish I'd known, I'd've set you up with a golden worldpass.  I'm there with a few characters, but Valatar is the name of my main, and I'm in the Grlpocalypse linkshell with the manly bright pink pearl.

There's no mention of a gold worldpass on that Wiki page.

Using a Gold Worldpass once you create a character enrolls you into that program.  So you and your friend get the benefits.

It is available to all subscribers, but the mechanics of using it involve the purchase of an in-game item, rather than being something done on the registration server.

If i may suggest, play it on the pc it is way better.

Running Windower the game looks better then any next gen mmo on the market and you can use a 360 stick on your pc...

But youll quit simply because the econ is so horrid

Dancer is pretty cool but so far end game its kinda tough (not needed because they have to melee)
Scholar is very interesting end game but from 1-75 your like a broken SMN (lol heal3 bot)

if your guying WHM to ease getting pts... I highly suggest you change main jobs lol. WHM is not needed at all for lvling pts later on (melee burn pts still rule, just they are using two handers now instead of duel)... If you want to have it on easy street i would suggest going BRD or RDM. Also, BLM can solo all the way to 75 with ease (lol the only class that can, you basically hunt at grounds that have pets, you kill the mob pets and get full xp lol).

DRG is also very strong now, and at end game DRG's can sub whm and use healing breath in a goon burn pt... (disgust)...

Hey i know way to much about ffxi and i play on Remora (if you call logging on once a week playing...)

In the end, econ is so bad that even a vet like myself cant deal with it.

Scholars got a nice boost in last week's patch, I actually went to the trouble of unlocking it afterwards.  Their pathetic spell selection got expanded, they got a HP-to-MP conversion ability at mid-levels, and they get to use their special abilities more often, improvements across the board for them.

Dancers kick ass, they look just downright fun to play.  Unfortunately, given that my character's a guy, I'm never ever playing a dancer.  I was standing around one day, and a male elvaan dancer was running past me at the time.  He fired off some buff for his party, and all of a sudden started twirling around while rainbows shot out of his ass.  At that moment, I knew that I couldn't ever play that job unless I rolled up a female character.  Words cannot adequately express just how ridiculous he looked.  Seriously, Hard Gay would look at the male dancers and be like, "Dude, turn it down."

Except for the Taru dancers.  Male or female, both of them just bounce around like gummi bears on meth, and that's hilarious enough to warrant playing.  Sadly, my character's human, so I can't pull that off.

as a huge fan of this game, the econ has killed it.

Until SE re-thinks the TS system and add more ways to earn gil (other then doing a bcnm and getting lucky) then this game is fucked lol. Back in the day, i could go to zi'tah and farm enough cuttings to make a lot of gil. You can't even do that, you cant TS, there are no strong farming grounds and imo, that is what is killing this game... its a damn shame really, and this rumor of a ffxi:2 is gona kill off any of us who are just looking for a reason to the pull the plug...

SE made a game engine that has really aged well but the engine can not be upgraded ... because of the way they made it. dunno... since SE followed what SOE did with EQ, im kinda worried about a sequel being like that POS EQ2...

Two weeks ago today is when I stopped playing.  Think I'm going to cancel my sub now.  Life isn't rewarding enough to be spending time in a second life earning fake loots and grinding hours away.

imagine if SE had an rvr system... it would work so well. Having jueno a neutral area, and all out war between windy , sandy and ... bastok.

In theory it would, but I don't think FFXI's combat mechanics are well suited to pvp.  I remember they put in that pvp game thing..  I tried it once, I think, but didn't like how it went.  Did that stick around?

Actually ballista is fun and having the different levels of ballista was lol... damn fun. Playing my galka drk in lvl60 ballista with a KC / Viking axe... is/was a good time but the problem with it is the stupid schedule times and the fact that, you get nothing for doing it.

The combat mechanics work really well actually ... damn galka monks are insane in ballista.

I just can't bring myself to login because how the econ has ruined many fun aspects of the game... an mmo where all i can do is raid aint interesting anymore to me.

i dunno. with AoC going down the drain, i maybe going back to ffxi.

It is a real shame, it seems like i may just stay in my FPS games for the bulk of my gaming time... I wana play a good mmorpg... but I want something that is next gen and without the econ mess that is ffxi.

I wish EvE was "fun" ... /cry

Title: Re: Now Taking Your Bets... (FFXI)
Post by: Margalis on August 13, 2008, 07:47:13 PM
This story is really misleading. If they are taking 18 hours then they are doing it wrong.

Basically they couldn't figure out how to beat the boss mob so they spent 18 hours accomplishing nothing instead of giving up. That's like saying a Gradius boss takes 18 hours to kill because instead of shooting the pulsing red orb you shot it in the claw and weren't doing any damage.

Some of the bosses in FFXI regenerate and if you can't figure out how to stop the regeneration and can't outpace it then you can't beat them with infinite time.

I dunno, really, how it works. I lost interest in FFXI a long, long time ago :angryfist: All I had read about FFXI endgame
and the massive poopsocking required to participate was enough to instantly turn me off. Not to mention the
grrrriiiiiiiiind just to get there.

It sure was pretty, though.
