Title: What are ya wearin?
Post by: sidereal on February 08, 2008, 01:43:10 PM

Yeah, baby.  Yeah.
Fortunately, I'm married.  So this hoodie's magical ability to repel chiquitas has no effect on me.

I must be too old to understand why people wear hoodies. That kind of jacket would have gotten you a swirlie when I went to high school, no matter what was on the fabric.

Half my wardrobe is hoodies.  In Seattle, you might need a hat at a moment's notice.  It's nice when that hat is attached to your jacket.  Easy to find.

Well, they do cover one's ears in the cold. Makes for a good underjacket as well.

I'd never be caught dead in that thing though.

Second the under jacket use. Canadian weather demands hoodies because there's nothing like waking up to -5 degree weather and then in the afternoon it hits the + side and you're getting hot.

Post by: caladein on February 08, 2008, 02:11:35 PM
I use hoodies almost exclusively for my jacket-esque needs, but then again, I'm in southern California so I don't know what this "cold" thing is.

Shit, I'm in Texas. It's hardly ever actually "cold" here. I just have bad circulation, I think.

I own all of one hooded jacket, and I never wear it.

Big in hip-hop when it's too cold to just wear your XXXXXXXL undershirt.

Wearing a smock in public like this has never made any sense to me at all.

Go to Nordstrom's or Buckle and try some of the Affliction/Couture stuff on. It's the most comfortable shit on earth. Don't do that if you aren't prepared to spend a pile of cash though.

Anyway, this shit is Very well made. VERY.

Well, skulls are perennially cool, I guess. Not necessarily screamo. I won't hold it against him. I have an x-pensive winos pirate skull t that I wear a lot (besides the black hanes shit).

In TN, camo caps signify your station as a local redneck.  Bonus points for a big truck and a 'chaw' in your mouth.

In fact, if you don't have camo somewhere on your body/truck then you are not 'normal'.

I utterly hate all things baseball. I blame my dad. I've never been a hat guy, but in the last few years I've picked up the habit (not to cover baldness, I have a lush mane). Here's my usual suspect:

I'm right there with you cal.

I also live in So-cal, and hoodies are one of the best clothing item I own. Can really keep you warm, (as much as you need to be warm in socal) and can open up in front if you need to cool down when the sun hits you.

Wearing this right now:

She's more of a Pac Sun person.  I hope to god she grows out of it.

I also agree about the "overpriced SHIT" comment.  It's really about getting her what she wants at this point.  I encourage her to develop her own style... even if it does end up with her lookign like everyone else.

The shit they have in Hot Topic was pretty cool, before there was a Hot Topic (not the stupid Marvel button ups) the shit that was ether hard to find, or you had to make yourself, like wallet chains and the spiked bracelets and shit. Also all the band stuff. But I think by definition the fact that Hot Topic exists makes that shit not cool anymore.

Post by: schild on February 11, 2008, 12:48:09 PM
You could always find that shit if you knew where to look. Concerts, Commander Salamander. Hot Topic just put it into malls.

Also, fat girls kills fads. But then, they cloistered them to Torrid. What a fucking great name for the fatties store.

Yeah, it was really hard to find that shit in Orange County back in the early 90's. We had one punk store that was like a 45 minute drive and every month or so we would all get really stoned and make the drive up there to buy a bunch of shit. Other than that most of my punk shit that I had I made myself.

I'm really not digging the pattern on the side trend I'm seeing in a lot of t's and other shirts. And I already have a problem with logos in general -- especially one on the back of a blazer.

75%+ of the time, I'm wearing a blazer or light jacket over these shirts. I'm not kidding when I say they are ULTRA COMFY.

Like, go try one on. If you prefer the less distressed look (and much cheaper), try out Archaic.

For reals, this shit is more comfy than triple mercerized $100+ polos from Macys.

Edit: By the way, some of the affliction stuff is, truly, loud. And I wouldn't wear it. For the most part, I avoid loud.

This is the loudest shirt I have from them:

But it's fucking awesome.

This, for example, I would not wear:

The closest I have is one of the super-soft King of Prides shirts, and yeah, they're well worth the dough. I usually layer it with something else, becuase I'm low-key like that.

If shirts could be like marshmallows, these would be them.

Anyone looking to make a casual addition to their wardrobe should buy at least one.

Yep. And now you can make a clever Videogame/Historical Japanese reference with the new series Affliction has.

Basically, it's the 108 stars of Suikoden. They're $66 a piece and drawn/painted by the foremost tattoo master in Japan.

You can't tell me that wouldn't be hot as shit with a pair of jeans and a light khaki jacket. (http://www.afflictionclothingstore.com//store/images/largeover/id725.jpg)

Edit: Also, I found the place that distresses and grinds the tees for Affliction - it's in Cali, called RJ Apparel or something. Anyway, just an idea as to why they're so expensive at retail - the shirts with nothing printed on them are like $30-$40 a piece. It's just, simply, expensive clothing. Marshmallows is a good description though.

Unlike Spreadshirt, Zazzle has destroyed (distressed, grinded) tees.

They are $28.95 with nothing printed on them.

Yeaaaaa.

Quote
Zazzle’s apparel products combine the very best materials with new digital printing technologies, producing brilliant images without compromising feel or durability. A new digital technology chemically bonds ink to cotton molecules, resulting in brilliant colors and photographic quality. The image is soft, breathable, vibrant and durable, without that “decal” feel typically imparted by heat-transfer and screenprint methods (you may sense more of a “decal” feel on dark-colored apparel however). There is no overprint around the image area, and images have a “wash fastness” equal to or better than other print methods on 100% cotton.

Zazzle’s apparel products come in both dark and light colors! Zazzle introduced the first-ever digital printing on dark apparel. For dark apparel, you may sense a bit more of a “decal” feel, but the quality and vibrancy will be very similar to that on light apparel. See special instructions for Zazzle dark apparel.

^^

Too bad they do direct to garment bullshit.

Title: Re: What are ya wearin?
Post by: stu on February 12, 2008, 06:25:04 AM
You should try one on. I used to scoff at the prices until I ran into some at various stores. These things are smoother than silk. The designs can be a bit much at times, but if you balance the outfit or use layers, you don't come off as being uppity at first glance. Unless you really are uppity.

All in how you carry yourself.  :-)

It really is about the layers, I wear an undershirt under some of the ones with a wider neck like the xtreme couture I'm wearing now:

I didn't even flinch.  Besides, I was playing bars in bands during the 80's and I didn't see anything much like that in the picture.

Piano ties, check.
White sports coats, check.
Leg warmers, check.

Those people don't even look like bad 80's wanna-bes
Agreed. Though I didn't see a lot of the new wave fashion (the real stuff, not the mtv-driven shlock) because we were an underground band that played in basements and keg parties. We saw mostly leather and denim.

I like that jacket Caladein linked, but I'm not a fan of the prints, and I especially hate logo-ized stuff. Fuck your logo. Put it on the label. That jacket would be nice without the printing. Most of my t-shirts are from concerts, because I like to support the artists and it means I don't have to shop for shirts.

I love layers, but my viking blood deters me from wearing them. It's 11 degrees F outside and I wore in a light winter jacket unbuttoned with my flimsiest work shirt. If I can't get away with a second shirt layer in bitter winter conditions (which I love), forget about summer. I never button my jacket!

I need to lose thirty pounds to  even begin looking at those, however.

There's a good example of what I wear most of the time. It's polo shirts with sports logos, or various solid polos of differing shades. I also like golf hats from different clubs I've played around the world.

And I wear jeans or khakis when they are clean. I'm not fashionable, and I don't think I've bought anything I actually wear. Everything I have is handed down from my father, or gifts from birthdays and holidays.

In essence, clothes are sort of meh to me, and I'm 26. I also could not wear the stuff Schild posted without getting my ass kicked in Atlanta. Or kicking my own ass first.

These t-shirts are for peoples who get tattoos of Chinese characters without knowing exactly what they mean, or because they look "cooler" that way. But bad ones. Not aesteticly pleasing (to me) and seemingly deviod of meaning. I'll pass, thanks.

Then again, I wear a few band t-shirts. Though they're less busy and the words generaly have more meaning rather than some random label name.

I will never, ever work another job that requires a tie. Old America can go fistfuck itself.

I don't have a problem with a shirt + tie necessarily.

However, my position is entry level, and we have zero contact with the public. Also, there's a bit of manual labor involved in moving lots of paper, especially on my part. The tie simply gets in the way; a polo would do just fine.

Also, having to go out and buy new shirts/pants every now and then sucks. Also, dry cleaning.

Schild, now that you lost some weight you should check out Penguine Clothing (http://www.penguinclothing.com/?gclid=CJHu4aP4xJECFSBeagodtlSQ2g) its a bit more mature than all that Affliction crap, but is nice quality and usually pretty awesome. They use muted outside colors, with very bright and colorful patterns on the inside and for liners.

Its hard to tell from that site, but their shit is good. I can finally start wearing it now that I lost some weight also. Its like classy yet hip at the same time. And it wont make you look like a thug. In fact picture that jacket you linked a page or two back, and add a very nice silk bright colored flower pattern on the inside and you have a good example of what their stuff is like.

You really do need to see it in person though.

That website just screamed "hipster" to me.

Granted, I am no paragon of fashion. My wardrobe, such as it is, is very muted. Except for my ski shirts, the "loudest" shirt I wear with any regularity is just a vertically-striped white/blue/black dress shirt with an angle-striped matching tie.

Hmm, I find it sort of odd how much some of you guys seem to be concerned with putting together your outfits, I guess if it helps you gut laid then more power to ya. I'm fashion impaired and sort of "out of the loop" though so I probably shouldn't criticize.

I like Gramicci pants (http://www.gramicci.com/Authentic_Original_G_Pant/pd/np/105/p/87063056.html), good materials and construction. I've got a bunch of nice fatigue green ones they don't make anymore. The belt is sucky if you want to tuck in your shirt (I don't), but the gusseted crotch is the best thing to ever happen to pants. I hope I don't ever have to wear regular crotch pants again.  :nda:

Black t-shirt.

Black long sleeve collared shirt.

Belt.

Black jeans or slacks.

Casual dress shoes.

Done.

(Some designs are alright, but I also don't like anything that's obviously a logo or too flamboyant.  A lot of those Affliction shirts are cool, but I'd want them to tone it down.  I'd wear this one (http://www.afflictionclothingstore.com/store/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=13_2&products_id=550) except I don't need it and would rather not spend $50 on a shirt I don't need.  Were I rebuilding my wardrobe, I'd probably get it.)

I only give a shit about my work clothes. I'm a sucker for Hickey Freeman and Facionable although my wallet doesn't let me indulge quite the way I want to. I let my wife buy my casual stuff.

Falconnable is for grandpas. Weirdly, I used to love that shit. And somehow, as I got older it got less appealing until I hit the mindset where only people over 65 should wear it.

Hickey Freemans triple-mercerized polos used to be a staple of my work clothing though.

I already had a girlfriend for multiple years that wanted to dress me. Never again.

The new Ecko Cut & Sew stuff is super hot though. So is the Liz Clairborne spring collection. I just picked up a blazer and two new pairs of jeans and christ are they great.

The one fashion tip I've accepted from a woman is "lose the baggy pants". She was right.

I'm always being told to get more "bright colors" though. Can't do it. Unless it's white. Sure as hell ain't gonna start sporting pastels anytime soon.

Correct. NO idea what it is, or why I should like it.

It's a piece of material sewed to the seams all around the crotch so that there isn't a seam right in the middle so your willy is more free to roam around your trousers with no fear of snaggage.

Facionable suits are very nice if you can find the ones made in Italy rather than Canada except they go for twice as much. Don't know how a three-button Italian suit classifies as "grandpa" but it looks like you don't wear suits to work so have a different frame of reference.

Ah. The suits. Not the I HAVE A YACHT, THIS IS MY SHIRT clothing.

That's different.

I prefer the fit of the Joseph Abboud stuff Nordstroms carries.

I guess I would have to see a pair of pants with this to really understand what the point would be.

Also, I don't like roaming. Roaming would get me in trouble, which is why I have to wear boxer-briefs constantly.

I have a few of those as they are more in my price range. The John W. Nordstrom ones are nice too.

Good Grief!  Gusseted and non-gusseted pics on the first google!

I think they mostly do it to keep the seam off of your dainty wee knob.

Did we notice how the guy on the right has a huge muffin-top and the guy on the left doesn't?

Hrm....

Anyway, I've never had to stop and think about the crotch of my pants before this thread. Now that I have, I feel better about myself.

Thanks for that picture, I didn't want to have to take a picture of my crotch. If you are the exhibitionist type though, I imagine the gusseted crotch would be a great way to break the ice at parties, "hey check it out!" :awesome_for_real: Wear them with some nice boxer briefs and your nutsack etc. will thank you.

I've had hit and miss with the Gramicci shirts; got one long sleeved T-shirt (discontinued model) that was really bad, thin fabric and a huge neck hole, but also got what is probably the best made shirt I've ever owned, a hemp/cotton sort of sweatshirt with side panels sewn in, had to get a second one of those. Anyhow it was no problem when I had to make a return. I think there are a couple stores in the Phoenix area that have their stuff in stock.

Righ has some lovely suits that he hasn't had to wear in years, except for the odd funeral or sommat.  He looks lovely in a suit but, geez, who needs 'em if you don't have to wear 'em?  I'm all for comfort.  I do most of the clothes shopping for him online and I look for soft shirts with no tags, comfy jeans (never bought him the gusseted ones), soft, tagless man-knickers, everything should be soft and non-binding.  Soft, soft, soft.  He's in charge of buying band/concert tees.  He has eleventy one bajillion.  I have 0.

The Merrells I bought during a Eurotrip a few years ago are starting to get old. These are the ones I plan on replacing them with: Merrell - Apollo (http://www.merrell.com/Product-Enlarge/NZSZZZ/Mens-Casual-Footwear/Laceups/Mens/Dark-Brown/J23027/Apollo.aspx)

The ones I have now are ultra-comfy and durable, like a wizard's sleeve. A wizard's sleeve for feet.

I got myself  my first Affliction shirt.   Holy shit  that thing is comfy. and in the size I would wear, it's form fitting but not obscenely tight like  Nike Soccer gear.  I've gotten good  remarks about it, but I'm going to go slow on new aquizitions until I plateau at a smaller size.

Recommended.

I tend to dress like I'm going hiking everyday: cargo shorts, t-shirt, and flannel. I'm sure grunge will popular again someday, and then I'll be super hip. I just picked up this shirt:

http://store.valvesoftware.com/tf2/img/zooms/zoom_tf2-tee.heavy-mens01.jpg

It has turned out to be pretty awesome looking. Clearly, it's not classy, but it's one of the nice long torso t-shirts and the artwork takes up a good part of the shirt, so it looks good. My current preferred jeans are Lucky brand. They're expensive but damn are they comfy. I need to see if they have a version with a gusseted crotch; I like the idea of being able to dance in them without busting a nut.

The new stuff is nicer than the stuff I used to get from them.

That said, I spent about $400-$500 at the Solis company in the Castro district (well, right outside the Castro).

Yea. I got the Affliction Blazer (http://www.afflictionclothingstore.com/store/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=13_28&products_id=617). It was $145 though. More than worth it. So light I can wear it in AZ.

Well, in a lot of the corporate world, a suit comes with a tie and proper shoes and all that rubbish.  It's like you're dressing up for the interview every day.  I don't see how that sort of clothing could be very comfy, especially in the summer.  I have a friend who worked for a big law firm, Morgan, Lewis and Bockius, and once when the AC was broken a memo was sent around telling them that they could remove their suit jackets while they were in their own offices unless a client was present.  He really, Really, REALLY hated it there but he had two small children and it paid the bills.
