So. Shirts that can't be printed by Spreadshirt are going to be submitted to threadless. Since it's my first shirt, I've put it up for critique. In other words, not submitted yet, but I wanted you all to have fair warning.

Any money I win at Threadless will go to f13 and my own direct-to-garment and screenprinting units to make real fucking shirts (maybe it's worth submitting everything to threadless if you game the system?

By the way, winners get $2500 per shirt that wins. So uhm, 4-8 of those would net f13 a proper t-shirt printing setup. So yea, I may just start doing stuff like that for a few months. Some more stuff will come to the f13 store though.

I have questions wrt the Terracotta Army design.

Does the background image (the collected warriors) get put on the t-shirt somewhere?
How about the slogan?
Or is the t-shirt just what's implied in that picture, i.e. a single Terracot on the front of the shirt?

We've been debating the multiple character thing, like with more behind him - light towards the front dark towards the back. Bigger issue right now though is the fact that they can't do all-over print. In fact, I don't even know if this one is valid until I submit. These guys need a belt printer.

Though, maybe, putting the army behind the one up front would Rock. I should look into that. Or do some kind of terracotta repeating pattern.

You definitely should get into screening shirts if you enjoy it. It's a lot of fun and easy money after your recoup the initial investment. I used to make shirts for my band using stuff at school (I was an art major for a long time). Also used school supplies for photography, fliers and album art bwahaha.

Screen Printers are expensive. I'm trying to find one cheap, but even craigslist for phoenix is coming up short. Also, I have no clue how to use one. Trying though.

We used to do it by hand. It was the dark ages. Goddamned kids. :geezer:

Monkeys can screenprint.  Build your own frame, use a groove and rubbercoated clothesline wedged in to hold the screen.  Need a darkroom, emulsion, ink and squeegees.  Needless to say, multicolor is MUCH easier on a machine.

The shirt (teh hate) was a troll. I dont like the lady liberty one. The terracota army is better, still wont win on threadless I dont think tough.

I find the illustrations confusing.  Is the thing that's going to be on the shirt the part of the image that's printed on the shirt, or is it the background of the image, or is it the entire image?

Like, is the slogan "Join the Terracotta Army" actually going to be on the Terracotta Army shirt, or are you just exhorting people to vote for your design?

Also, I suggest not having the designs go all the way to the bottom of the shirt.  Between the navel and neck is the best viewing area.  Anything lower and people need to look at your crotchal region to see your shirt in all its glory.

See the little cartoony shirt, that's the one provided by Threadless to place the actual shirt image on? In other words, that's what the shirt is. Everything else is just filler. Go look at the non-printed tees. Advertising and such. (As in, the Threadless voting tees, you'll see what I mean).


I don't know how to say this without SOUNDING mean, but I don't mean it this way:

Shirt art these days is something to be abused.If companies have the ability to print in those areas, you print in those areas. The point of Threadless is that they can do more for this stuff than "bellybutton to neck."

Like the second one, first is OK. Do both with just one shade (dark grey on black t-shirt or other close combos--light grey on white maybe).

Partly that.  And partly that any part of the shirt that falls below the bellybutton is most likely to be obscured when the shirt is actually being worn.  With schild's designs it isn't so much of an issue, but I have at least one Threadless shirt where the important part of the illustration is competely obscured if the wearer sits down.  So it's part of my kneejerk mental filter (along with "no black/white/yellow/pink" when browsing/buying Threadless shirts now.  Graphics below navel = NEXT.  And it might be for others as well.

Now that I look at the Terracotta shirt again, it's not a problem because the important part is the face and that's highly visible.  The Justice design should be moved up a bit on the shirt, though.  Unless you're planning on putting words above it or something.

Most of those $40-50 designer graphic tees (ie: the King of Prides T's from Express) have full vertical prints. Chest-centered prints are always cool, but if the real estate is there, why not use it? If part of the design is obscured, people are going to want to take a closer look at it if the rest looks good, so that should be a bonus.

The main thing I don't like in my T's is a lot of silly script (ie: King of Prides T's) and the ones here are better for not having any.

Oh I figured that at the time the real army existed, they probably sounded like that dude. Mongolians are the people keeping it real in that region.. While China doesn't know wtf it is anymore.

I have this same issue with Obey and Affliction/Xtreme Couture. A lot of people think that shit is gaudy. And maybe, yea, a lot of it is. But it's SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO fucking comfortable. Also, some of the design is fucking wicked.

Samwise, the solution to your problem is to order the next smaller size in shirts.  When the hem is above your navel, your poignant message will be easily viewed by all pertinent parties.

Affliction just came out with a line of shirts called Heroes & Demons. It's basically amazing illustrations of the 108 Stars of Suikoden.

I am not kidding.

They are amazing.

Submitted the first shirt. Should be up for voting tomorrow. Basically, the critique forum goes way too slow, as such, I'm hoping to get some actual feedback by submitting it.

My cousin is an artist (we seem to have a lot of them in my family.  I mostly call them unemployed.) but he doesn't make enough money doing that.  So instead of getting a regular job, he supplements by doing silk screen printing.  He has had mostly the same equipment as long as I can remember.  At least 15 years, probably more, and he bought it second hand.

Gota ask, what makes the shirts here not able to be printed?

Spreadshirt doesn't screenprint. They do flock/flex. Everything is cut out by hand for each and every shirt.

Basically, they suck.

Most screenprinting places make you have a minimum. We have no money to do such a thing.

Yeah, looked them up. But for the t-shirt submission, you ARE still using them correct? If so, ill go by the specifications on the site.

Well. I'd rather not use them. But screenprinting/discharge/etc is not a business I can afford to preorder on based on the people on f13. Which is to say, they're not going to buy enough to make it a worthwhile venture. As such quality will never be What It Could Be.

So the answer is yes?
