The internet is serious business.

I'm not sure what people are doing on myspace that makes them hate it so much. Some friends message me there. I'm not sure what the harm in that is. It's basically email. What magical features am I not unlocking?

MySpace users should be gassed.

That's awesome. For all the hundreds of millions of dollars Rupert Murdoch paid for MySpace, it's still butt ugly and broken and stupid and spammy and annoying. Only good for bands.

Are other spots like it less spammy? I'd agree that that sucks. I don't give a shit how ugly is though. I'm private, don't care to "showcase" my leet design skills... Like I said, it's just glorified email. Not sure why everyone geeks out about something so mundane. Sounds like they're the ones with the problem.

Because normal email is too hard? Lets reinvent the wheel but make it butt ugly?

Because normal email is too hard? Lets reinvent the wheel but make it butt ugly assail our ears with the most horrid fucking music ever imagined every time we click on someones fucking page?

Fixt!

I've looked at my friends' pages like once each -- when i added them or they added me. It wasn't that big of an ordeal.

Also, get friends with better taste in music if it's so bad that it's "assailing" you with horridness.

The value of something like MySpace (or FaceBook or what have you) is that it makes it easy to track down people whose email addresses you don't already know.  It also simplifies the process of making a personal web page for people who don't really have anything interesting to contribute but want some sort of "web presence" anyway.  It's the modern equivalent of a Geoshitties account.

There's a totally awful multi-gig rar of stolen private myspace pictures floating around the pirate bay. I'm leaving the SA goons to prune out the good stuff.

Multi gig? That's just weird.

Yes. It's 17 gigs and all over the P2P networks. It's a dump of everything that was marked "private" on all accounts.

The goons have dug up some creepy stuff, some funny stuff, and some stuff I hope to never see again.

here's the thread (http://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=2752948)

Crappy thing is, i don't think that deletes your myspace. It just means you can't access it anymore, its still there...for marketing reasons.

I'd have to say that anyone who would download 17 gigs of random myspace photos is creepy too. Extremely so.

Welcome to the inter-tubes. SA in particular.

My company shares office space with another company that has a significantly easier job. All I ever see those people do is read myspace pages. Horrible awful pink monstrosities blinged out with glitter and slutty photos.

It's a stupid waste of time for the barely computer literate, but it doesn't particularly make me upset. It's just a sad something I would never ever be interested in.

Fact: Everything useful for the masses gets H.A.T.E. of some people who feel a little left out.

Google anyone?

I really don't see ANY reason to believe myspace is bad for anyone registered there.
Why?

1) Community projects like that help the people with internet access all over the world to get closer to one another. Get familiar with once "strange" cultures or better- *people* representing those cultures one would naturally (educationally?) call "weird".

2) It actually really helps mostly people in their teens- especially those are usually not the most communicative- to develop contacts to peers their age and akin of their way if thinking, talking, behaving and presenting to other people to find one another and don't feel like someone left out of society

3) You registered for a reason right? Wether it may be your friends showing off pictures where YOU look cool and you thought you might as well give all the chicks impressed by that a chance to actually hook up with you or you just wanted your most favourite local band to know you think they are the next BIG act.

For short- myspace IS everything the internet is, too. It gets you a chance to communicate in your very own and special way with the rest of the world.

This, and the fact that myspace actually delivers the most massive base of possible recipients to your message, I think, rose it high enough to get enough uber-geeks who actually were amongst the first to register there, start a campaign of hate.

I think the default design isn't all that bad. But yeah, some of these profiles are a bit much. I'll give you that. Strictly design speaking, it'd be more pleasing to the eye if everyone went to Virb (http://www.virb.com/) (afaik... maybe there's better.. I've never actually seen a facebook page before), but in the end, I don't give a shit what anyone does.

Social sites and things like spock.com give people away to control the way they are viewed online, at least to some extent. With many of us being pretty googlable, I think its important people have some control over the way they are represented online. Not every person is savvy enough to hang a shingle and tell the world "hey this is me!" Social sites solve the problem nicely.

That said, mySpace should still burn in a car for all the times is has molested my eyes/ears. Facebook may be run by a twit, but at least most pages don't leap off the screen to kick me.

MySpace users should be gassed.

Unless they're a band. That's the only reason MySpace has for existing as far as I'm concerned.

Yeah, it's good for bands.

For me, it represents the changing demographic of my shitbag town as people move here from NYC because their welfare dollars go so much further. So now we have a lot of teens and ex-cons using the computers only for myspace, to hook up or communicate with people back in NYC. They don't actually use any other resource at the library and drive away traditional users.

One day we were testing some remote software to verify if someone was looking at something inappropriate, which we decided was itself inappropriate because it violate confidentiality we hold dear. But as I was demonstrating it, we learned all the teen girls were using it to hook up for sex. All the guys come in looking for hookups. Apparently the library is now the place to come use myspace to get laid. That's just bizarre. I'd leave it as an oddity if it weren't driving away traditional users.

I can't delete my account because I have the most awesome name ever.

There's a quote in that SA thread that might be about you:

Quote
Still though, there's some subtle ridiculousness to be found in some of these pictures, I'm sure. Maybe not porn, maybe not pseudo porn, but at the very least there's an asshole in a tophat waiting to be ridiculed.

I think the worst thing in the SA thread was the pseudo- :pedobear: stuff when it turns out that the photographer was related to the girls in question:
"Yeah, he was their father/uncle/cousin"
"So he was the father for some, the uncle for others and so on?"
".....nnnnnno. He was the father and the uncle and the cousin to some of the girls. The police have brought a geneticist in to untangle the family tree"

I've been trying to figure out who half the people in the F13 facebook group are for a while now.  Is there a competing MySpace group we can use to frustrate Schild with?
