Title: FOX to start MMO
Post by: Bungee on January 25, 2008, 04:29:41 AM
Quote
FOX is one of the world's most renowned entertainment companies and we're excited to develop an online game based on one of its leading intellectual properties.

Want to know what "leading intellectual property" they are talking about?

Find out (http://www.warcry.com/news/view/80621-Ice-Age-Movie-Being-Adapted-For-MMO) and have yourself a good laugh.

P.S.: Rather old news, wondered why I couldn't find it here anywhere

This actually makes some sense, if they plan to push the IP a bit more.

Bah, no adult is going to play one of these cutsey wootsie animals in this game!

By the way, when are they implementing Pandaras in WoW anyway?  I'm so sick of playing my Tauren.   I've been switching to my female gnome lately.  It's the one with the big purple poms on her head.

Sorry, didn't place my text in the right color.

Now I'm off to brush my night elf's ears.  They are looking a bit ratty.

Starting quest - collect 5 acorns on the glacier.

That movie is perfect for conversion to a MUMORPUGER!

This game will annhilate WoW's numbers.

At least on Fox News' reports.  Remember, news is what THEY say it is.

I hear ya guys on the Fox news thing and all, but... is it really necessary to associate the news outlet with all of the other stuff they do? I mean... It's like one of the oldest film companies. And 99% of what they do today has nothing to do with O'Reilly's shenanigans.

Respect is earned.  Fox has done a lot to trade respect for revenue over the past two decades.  Yes, they are doing very well financially... but they whored themselves out to get it.

Name brand recognition! Like Titanic, or Hindenburg!

Extremely oversized, go for long distances and then crash and kill hundreds and thousends of people?

Sounds like desirable ending for Fox.

Would make for great news on, don't know- CBS?

There are whores at Fox?  They should do a documentary expose on that.

Again, I don't understand the hate/doomcasting or whatever it is here.

Besides, all media conglomerates have their faults. What makes them worse than Sony, Disney, or WB? What standard am I supposed to be holding them up to here exactly? And why is any of that all that relevant to a game based off of Ice Age?

Yeah, but companies like that are such a huge beast that the hand basically doesn't know what the foot is doing. Fox News is just one small segment, and has next to nothing to do with it's entertainment divisions, especially video game ones. This is as silly as criticizing Mickey Mouse for something Jim Rome said, or refusing to watch Batman Begins because my Roadrunner internet service sucks.

I haven't really watched anything on FX, but my friend tells me that Michael Chiklis could kick John McClane's ass. That's a bold claim imho. I'm tempted to see for myself.

The Shield was very good early on, but it just got to be too much; too much over the top.  But yeah, Michael Chiklis oozes badassness.  He'd take McClane down in about 4 rounds.

Title: Re: FOX to start MMO
Post by: Margalis on January 25, 2008, 10:54:17 PM
Really? Season 4 of the Shield was probably the most laid-back of all of them, and 5 was excellent. I guess I do see that they stretched a bit to keep up the capers...always getting into trouble. But season 3 was probably the peak of that out-of-the-frying-pan-and-into-the-fire plotting.

It's Always Sunny in Philidelphia is quite good as well. I liked the first season of Nip/Tuck and Damages seemed good though I missed most of it.

The only reason I don't watch FX more is that the '7' on my remote is busted.

Title: Re: FOX to start MMO
Post by: SnakeCharmer on January 25, 2008, 11:00:15 PM
I didn't watch it past season 3, which is where it lost me.
Nip/Tuck was much the same way.  Lots of shock and awe early to make a name for itself, then it just turned into the surreal.  Now it just seems to be 'What can we do to push the cable censors even harder?'.

Oh well.

/derailed.

Or blaming John Smedley for MxO, or blaming Hartsmann for the NGE, or blaming all of Paramount for marginalizing Trek... come on, how are you surprised we're not antagonistic about all of Fox for their news channel reporters playing Decider on what is fact?

Sweet now we can get our propoganda in MMO form!

I even have an idea for their intro quest

  -  "Travel to Church yard and stop 5 gay marriages"  your reward can be membership to the republican party  :awesome_for_real:

Bill O'reily should be a raidboss IMO.

I don't get it.

From reading the thread (not article) headline, I would have thought they had smelled the money and were announcing an Aliens vs Predators MMO. It would fit right in with the new movie, litterature, etc. They might even manage to release it, before THQ or Blizzard release any space MMOs they might have in the pipeline.

(edited to clarify)

Hmm.  They may have chosen Ice Age over Aliens vs Predator because it reaches a wider market.  AvP would have to be a hardcore gamer game for young males, more or less.  Ice Age is free to hit a bigger market that WoW and The Sims and even the Wii to some extent have tapped into.  Kids and Girls would probably be more likely to try Ice Age then AVP.  AVP would have to be harsh and dark where the strong prevail and the weak eat space dust PG-13 kind of world.  Ice Age can be happy joy fun time for the whole family kind of world.

I doubt I would try an Ice Age MMO though, but I'm probably more of a hardcore gamer compared to the large casual market out there.  I don't like The Sims either so....

They're taking their cue from Disney (Toontown/Pirates). Shit like that. Too many hands in that other cookie jar.

Besides, an AVP MMO would be stupid.

Are you kidding me? If people in this Forum even DARED to suggest a StarCraft MMO- why shouldn't there be a player base for an AvP based?
I mean, where's the exact difference except for the Aliens to be far more attractive than the Zerglings and their kin. Oh- and Protoss wouldn't be playable in a SC MMO.

Honestly though, I couldn't see an AvP mmo working because the basis for all of the stories are small scale. Whether it's Aliens fighting a Predator or two, or Aliens fighting a group of humans. Makes for a good shooter or some kind of small cooperative game, but having a whole world built around the idea of those conflicts doesn't seem right.

Ice Age, otoh, is a neat idea for kids, in the spirit of ToonTown. And like I said, there isn't a lot of competition in that market. While everyone and their mom is trying to make mmo's that appeal to the general gamer crowd.

Unless set in the time frame talked about in the first AvP, the time when humans were cattle, and the fighting between Aliens and predators was ongoing.

Would say the opposite -- few IP lean themselves so well to the whole "everything in its own instance, we can't have people actually interact" approach you have common in the newer MMOs.

Aliens in particular seems born for that kind of shit. Just add some predators to the mix, shake well. Nuke from the orbit to be sure.

Well, you're talking to a guy who hates instancing. I think it pretty much defeats the purpose of why I'd even consider playing mmo's to begin with, so you're not gonna get much agreement from me with this either!  :-) If one is going to seclude every one like that, then you might as well just make a smaller game. It'll probably be a richer experience anyhow, with more experts available who can work on that level, and without all of that cash wasted on a huge backend.

That's just me though. I'm not trying to convince you of anything.

Heh i'm not too fond of instancing myself, just saying AvP would work well with it and since that's where the MMOs seem to be heading... welp  :awesome_for_real:

AvP MMOFPS. Go.

Seriously, I don't really think there's enough definition and consistency in either IP, much less both of them, to really think neither or both could be completely redefined yet again to fill a budgetary need.

Title: Re: FOX to start MMO

I'd rather see something like a Predator or Aliens strat game, like X-Com or something. FPS's have been done enough. No comment on "MMOFPS".
