A 16-year-old's parents went on holiday, leaving him at a friend's house "because he had to work" (Aussie summer job). Turns out he actually had a Risky Business style party planned at his parents' place, with a general invitation issued via MySpace and text message: 500 people turned up. So did the cops, plus a police helicopter. A riot ensued, with bottles thrown, damage to neighbours' properties and cop cars, with the total bill at $20,000.

With his parents on their way home to ground him, facing a huge bill, the police considering charging him, and a national media frenzy, most 16-year-olds would waver, and at least feign regret.

Note: The program he was interviewed on is pretty much held up to ridicule every day. It is one of the worst shows on TV.

Financially it's the second-best show on TV, behind only its near-identical competitor. Every night, about 3-4 million Australians watch one or the other. Advertising on it works better than anywhere. I hate it as much as you, but we lose.

This is once instance where the media should just let go.  Some jerk-off has had his fifteen minutes of fame, now let it go.  Fucking tabloid idiots.  All they're doing is inflating the kid's reputation.

In my job as a news editor, I have the power to let this go. But advertising is the income of the company I work for. Advertising stuff in the media works. Advertisers pay more if the audience grows, because the ads work better. All companies are under pressure to raise their income all the time, so I am under pressure to grow the audience.

I don't think about advertising or dollars, I think about news value and clicks. If I put an important political story on the front page, it will get (imaginary numbers) 2000 clicks in 90 minutes. If I put the latest update on Corey the party boy on the front page, it will get 20,000 clicks in the same 90 minutes. Remember, more audience = more income for my employer.

But you're saying I should just ignore that because it's time to let go. Lose the company money. How long do you think I would last? If I fall on my sword, some other schmuck will step up and comply.

I'm not arguing in favour of more Corey. I'm also not saying that I make editorial decisions purely on advertising motive - I do make ethical decisions to take things down when I think enough is enough. But I'm trying to demonstrate why it's not always a "time to stop now" decision.

The audience absolutely devours these things, so there is a profit motive to provide more of the same. To turn Corey into a superstar and spin the story out for as long as possible. The audience demands that the media be scum. How can this be solved?

I don't think anyone who's sitting around talking about Corey the party dude, clicking links to stories about him, and possibly forwarding those links to his/her friends can reasonably complain about anyone else needing to "let go".

I totally understand where you're coming from.  In some respects it's just a game to get the ratings.  Nothing wrong with that.

My complaint is more "in perfect dreamy world" I shouldn't have to put up with this shit (Britney, Diana inquest, celeb gossip) in the news headline in the mainstream media.  Sure, cover it for those people who give a shit, but don't lede with Yellow Corey or car crashes in country Victoria when there's far more interesting news.

As for the phrase "the audience demands" I think you could parallel that with "the playerbase demands" to see what a fucked up argument that is.  "the audience demands" is convenient double-talk for "lots of people will pay for (or allow me to generate revenue from) this shit".  You admit as much in you explanation.   :grin:

I'm guessing the idea is to use shit like this to generate ad money, so that in the future, you can actually afford to cover the Actual News.

A 16-year-old youth has been charged with producing child pornography and creating a public nuisance in relation to a wild party in Melbourne's outer suburbs last weekend.

Since when is throwing a house party and causing some damage news?

By the time I was a junior in high school I had 3 different friends who each had their own houses. Two of them were actually responsible and only threw smallish parties but the third not so much... Ben basically got his own house when he was 16. His grandfather passed away and left him and his mom a good bit of money. His mom decided to move to Florida with her boyfriend and left Ben back home since he didn't want to transfer high schools his senior year.

So, now you have 17 year old boy, living by himself in a $400-$500k house (hot tub, sauna, etc.), has a bit of new found money in the form of inheritance and no local supervision whatsoever. We threw some huge ass parties and probably caused way more than $20k damage to that place. Although all our damage was restricted to his property and did not effect the neighbors at all outside of maybe some noise complaints.

I can say through all of that we never made the news ... Hell, we even managed to completely avoid detection from our own parents.

The party is not the news, he is.

As someone who has been arrested after having a party in a Masonic Temple lodge that turned into a riot - in which the cops blocked off the street and the helo came, I'm not that impressed.

I see you don't watch Australian current affairs programs. They seem to think they have a divine mission from God to confront everyone who they feel is in the wrong. Every time I see them chase people down and hold open their car doors and whatnot saying "Mr X why don't you speak with us? Are you just going to run away? What are you going to do about what you've done? Are you proud of what you've done?" it drives me fucking insane that they think they have the right to do these sort of things. All their reporters sound like self-righteous prats that need a good beating. I'm hoping one day they push the wrong buttons on the wrong person and they get stomped on. Literally, face on pavement hospital visit stomped on. They deserve it.

Just the other day they had a story on how the Xbox 360 and iPod can have high failure rates for 'toys'. It's tabloid journalism that unfortunately finds a big audience for the black and white view of the world.

And Corey is perfect tabloid fodder. He gets the fame and noteriety, they get someone who generates an ongoing story. Last night one station had his parents on (or so the lead-in ads said).

Without this attention, Corey goes back to being an apprentice plasterer. As I said before, he's cultural flotsam and not worth worrying about.
