Title: Should I ask for a PS3 for my birthday? Post by: Morfiend on January 02, 2008, 09:41:48 AM So, as far as tech stuff goes, I pretty much have everything I want or need, but every time I see that shiny PS3 box at best buy I am tempted. I was firmly against the PS3 for quite a while, but they are now starting to get some good games. Would it be worth it for me to get a PS3 for the following games:
Uncharted Folklore Resistance Wow, as I write that, I realize that I think those are the only games I currently would buy. Are there any other exclusives coming out any time soon? Title: Re: Should I ask for a PS3 for my birthday? Post by: Rasix on January 02, 2008, 09:59:35 AM LittleBigPlanet seems to be due out first quarter 08.
Haze on January 15. Some other stuff you might or not be interested in an released in early 08: Disgaea 3 Metal Gear Solid IV GT5 Prologue Devil May Cry 4 (exclusive?) Of all of those, I'm really only interested in Disgaea 3. Sucks, but there would still only be 2 must buys for me on the system after Q1. Other interesting stuff is multi-platform release. But hey, Bluray player! Title: Re: Should I ask for a PS3 for my birthday? Post by: schild on January 02, 2008, 11:06:21 AM Haze was delayed til the summer or something. I thought...
But Little Big Planet is worth the cost of admission on it's own. DMC4 is not an exclusive. It is the first week of February though, and the PS3 version is the lead platform. Turok is supposed to be a damn fine game. Condemned 2 should be pretty great. GTA4? Basically, once you own both, there's slight brightness and edge differences that may make you favor one console over the other. I buy PS3 games for *most* cross platform titles simply because of the dual shock analog stick layout. Also, it does super white and full range HDMI much better than my 360 elite does. Also, those 3 titles are pretty great. Also, Heavenly Sword and Time Crysis 4 (if you like light gun games). Title: Re: Should I ask for a PS3 for my birthday? Post by: Yegolev on January 02, 2008, 12:39:22 PM Ratchet & Clank Future, but I think most people here are not into that.
I like my sticks to be symmetrical. Normally the 360 controller doesn't irritate me because it's not critical to gameplay, but I absolutely cannot do the charge-roll in Beautiful Katamari without putting the controller in my lap like some sort of gimp. If I put the controller into my lap, I've already lost. Title: Re: Should I ask for a PS3 for my birthday? Post by: Ookii on January 02, 2008, 12:43:00 PM Well if you want to just go in terms of justification, do you have an HD tv?
Title: Re: Should I ask for a PS3 for my birthday? Post by: Riggswolfe on January 02, 2008, 12:58:13 PM With my PS3 I have the three mentioned games and my 5 free bluray titles plus a few other "meh" games. And I still have a bit of buyer's regret. That said, there are good games coming down the line so you might want to get one now to have the backwards compatibility and enjoy the few (three! four if you count R&C) good games on it.
So far the PS3 is losing hard core due to a shitty selection of games that are exclusive. I'd say it's even worse than the Wii because at least Nintendo is churning out some decent titles. Title: Re: Should I ask for a PS3 for my birthday? It comes down to, again, Do you have an HDTV. And I'm pretty sure he does. Title: Re: Should I ask for a PS3 for my birthday? Post by: Ookii on January 02, 2008, 01:04:58 PM And I'm pretty sure he does. Then the purchase is justified the first time you play a Blu Ray movie, it's a bonus the thing plays games as well. Title: Re: Should I ask for a PS3 for my birthday? Post by: Moaner on January 02, 2008, 02:06:42 PM I'll second the new Ratchet and Clank. It made my top 20 list. It's balls to the wall fun from start to finish IMO.
I also really enjoyed Warhawk and still play it upon occasion, but I've never played a Battlefield style game. From what I gather, if you've played any of the Battlefield games, Warhawk isn't nearly as impressive. If you still have PS2 games you want to play the PS3 does a pretty damn good job at up-scaling them. For instance Persona 3 and Odin Sphere looked great up-scaled to 720p. Title: Re: Should I ask for a PS3 for my birthday? Post by: schild on January 02, 2008, 02:09:03 PM If you want backwards compatibility, Toys R Us is now blowing out 20GB PS3s at $300. If you don't need Wireless, this price point is fucking PERFECT.

If you don't need Wireless, this price point is fucking PERFECT. Speaking of the Backwards compatibility issues, i am also considering getting a PS3, and want to make ABSOLUTELY certain that i get the best possible backwards compatibility setup (planning to donate my ps2 to my sister once i have a PS3, and can not live without my PS2 RPG collection). In that regards, from what I understand, out of the current bunch: the old 20 gig is backwards compatible, the new 40 gig is not, and the new 80 gig is. And out of the 20 gig versions of old, there was a Software based BC setup, and a Hardware based BC. Assuming i could still find either of the old 20 gig types (i live in the toronto area, canada), which one gives the better Backwards Compatible experience? Title: Re: Should I ask for a PS3 for my birthday? Post by: schild on January 02, 2008, 08:31:44 PM Get a 60GB or a 20GB. Any of them. Far as I know, there's no such thing as software 20GB.
You have no other options. Title: Re: Should I ask for a PS3 for my birthday? Post by: SurfD on January 02, 2008, 10:09:58 PM there is a 60 gig option? Bestbuy only seemed to list 40 and 80.
Title: Re: Should I ask for a PS3 for my birthday? Post by: schild on January 02, 2008, 10:25:28 PM Go to an EB or a lesser known store than Best Buy. I bought both of my 60GB from EB.
Title: Re: Should I ask for a PS3 for my birthday? Post by: SurfD on January 02, 2008, 10:56:09 PM sounds like a plan.
Title: Re: Should I ask for a PS3 for my birthday? Post by: Samwise on January 02, 2008, 11:01:29 PM At $300 with PS2 backwards compatibility I actually might get a PS3. What am I screwing myself out of by getting the 20GB version? Do I have to uninstall and reinstall games? My last proper console system was an original NES.
Title: Re: Should I ask for a PS3 for my birthday? Post by: schild on January 02, 2008, 11:16:01 PM You can replace the hard drive with a hugemongous one. Up to 400GB I think.
The 20GB one has no wireless or compact flash/memory slots. Knowing you, just get it and replace the hard drive and kiss all of your fears away. It has gigabit ethernet built in. Also, I hear the processor is powered by an Old One. Title: Re: Should I ask for a PS3 for my birthday? Title: Re: Should I ask for a PS3 for my birthday? Post by: schild on January 02, 2008, 11:56:08 PM You can find a list on the Sony site.
Really, Hardware or bust on this one. Particularly for people that like Atlus games. Title: Re: Should I ask for a PS3 for my birthday? That just ruined my day. :heartbreak: I got an 80GB PS3 for xmas from my girlfriend. And I found Steambot Chronicles nearly as much fun as anything I could do with my genitals. Well, I suppose I'll just have to keep my PS2 packed away for emergencies - henceforth to be known as "old dusty." Title: Re: Should I ask for a PS3 for my birthday? Anyone have any good ideas on tracking down a 60 gig version in the brampton / toronto area? (going to check with my local EB tomorrow when businesses are open) Title: Re: Should I ask for a PS3 for my birthday? Post by: schild on January 03, 2008, 12:25:34 AM Check EB and ask to do a district lookup. It's worth the effort. You might even find a used one (they're all considered refurbs since they send them out to have the porn cleaned off the harddrive. I think they're about $380 now.
Title: Re: Should I ask for a PS3 for my birthday? Post by: SurfD on January 03, 2008, 12:39:11 AM is it safe to get a refurb, or am i going to be forced to buy an EB extended warranty in the event that i find a refurb unit at a decent price only to have it crap out / die after a month or two?
Title: Re: Should I ask for a PS3 for my birthday? Post by: schild on January 03, 2008, 12:40:49 AM Hm.
My second one is a refurb. I did not get the warranty. I've heard so few reports that I'm not worried and Sony is quick to respond if there is an issue apparently (I had to google this). Post by: Yegolev on January 03, 2008, 08:31:08 AM EB managers are liars and thieves, or perhaps just bitter retards with the reading comprehension of a postal worker. In any case, the number I hear for BC on the 80GB model is 80%. The 60GB are no longer in production so you'll have to be both lucky and good to find one. Atlanta is like the Sargasso Sea of gaming so if you're in the metro area (between Knoxville and Macon), you should be able to find one if you apply yourself.
This BC situation burns my anus. If Sony stalls on improving the software PS2 emulator, I'm going to be angry for reals. Title: Re: Should I ask for a PS3 for my birthday? Oddly enough, the first TRU I called only didn't have the 20GB model (but still had some 60GB @ $500). The other five were no-go's on either of the older models (and I wasn't going to go through all 16 stores within 25 miles in one sitting). Pre-Disgaea 3 though, I think a fire-sale on the last of the hardware-BC systems is about the only thing to get me excited about one, especially without an HDTV in the house. Also, I'm not sure who's hold music I hate more: TRU or Zune Tech Support :ye_gods:. Title: Re: Should I ask for a PS3 for my birthday? The 40 GB models include Spiderman 3 in the box though. I kinda wish the 80 GB model had, I'm not much of a driving game fan, so Motorstorm doesn't excite me much. This game looks fucking HOT, and supposedly has over 500k weapons in it. (All Procedurally generated). Quote "The coolest thing about games like World of Warcraft is leveling up your character and then going to up to band of weaker players and totally destroying them," he says. The game allows for up to four player co-op that allows new players to enter and leave on the fly. Also, it's possible to play with characters of different levels in co-op and even level-up your own characters in co-op. Not only will this sort of leveling up change the playing field in Borderlands, but guns. Lots and lots of guns.Borderlands features an in-house Gearbox created weapons sequencer that can produce up to a half a million different weapons — all with different names, appearance, properties. "Imagine any cool weapon you've ever wanted in a game," Pitchford says. "Borderlands has it." The sequencing means that players will most likely never see the same weapon twice. Ever. Gearbox doesn't seem concerned about the possibility of there being one single weapon that is more powerful than anything else in the game. "If there's a gun that can break the game, why would we limit that?" he says. Do you think there is a gun that can break the game? "I don't know," he says. "I guess we'll find out." Gearbox doesn't care either way. Or maybe, it just cares too much. Like i said, Balance is a lie. Title: Re: Should I ask for a PS3 for my birthday? To be honest though, my brain hurts from reading that chart. The fact that we need so many damn charts more so. Title: Re: Should I ask for a PS3 for my birthday? Post by: Samwise on January 08, 2008, 12:12:06 PM This goes to reinforce my view that consoles suck. :awesome_for_real:
Even in PC land where all the OSes hate each other, you can plug your Dell keyboard into an iMac and have it work. I've been spoiled. Title: Re: Should I ask for a PS3 for my birthday? You can plug your mac keyboard into a PS3 and have it work. The analogy is crappy. Activision wants to charge with compatibility, which makes double sense since EA/Harmonix knows they crafted a piece of shit guitar. Activision owns superior hardware and wants EA to cough it up. This is good business. Not some kind of compatability conspiracy. Title: Re: Should I ask for a PS3 for my birthday? Title: Re: Should I ask for a PS3 for my birthday? Post by: Morfiend on January 15, 2008, 09:23:21 AM So I got one for my birthday. Now I need to go get some games. Any recommendations?
Most non exclusive stuff I will get on my xbox, especially FPS games, since the Xbox controller is much better for me for those. Also, I dont like Sports (except skating) and driving games. I was planning on: Uncharted Folklore Resistance Tony Hawk I have also been considering getting Lair used since I heard they patched the controls and it works much better now. PS. Any change of getting Xbox added to spell checker? Title: Re: Should I ask for a PS3 for my birthday? Post by: Moaner on January 15, 2008, 11:31:42 AM Download the Ratchet and Clank demo to see if it interests you. It's my favorite PS3 game after Uncharted.
Also, Super Stardust HD is great fun. You can find it on PSN. Title: Re: Should I ask for a PS3 for my birthday? Post by: Sauced on January 15, 2008, 11:35:02 AM I would also dl the Folklore demo. We still haven't picked it up yet - the demo is fun, but something was missing for me. Another vote for R&C, but you might already know that those games aren't for you.
edit: Struck out Skate reference - you mentioned cross-platform would get 360 treatment Title: Re: Should I ask for a PS3 for my birthday? Post by: Yegolev on January 15, 2008, 12:35:23 PM Folklore game is better than the demo. I might be wrong since I seem to hate demos, but with the demo you don't get the story and world introduction, which is a big part of a mystery-story-based game.
I can't remember if you also have a PS2, but there's some nice stuff for PS2 from last summer. You didn't mention which PS3 you have, though. I will have to assume it's the non-BC one and also suggest Ratchet & Clank Future. Title: Re: Should I ask for a PS3 for my birthday? Post by: Morfiend on January 15, 2008, 01:17:55 PM I got the 80gb, and I have skate for Xbox already. I have always liked Tony Hawk more on the PS controller, as I would rather use the pad than the thumbstick.
I am also planning on picking up PS2 Shadow of the Colossus since I never played that back in the day. Title: Re: Should I ask for a PS3 for my birthday? Post by: Morfiend on January 16, 2008, 11:07:01 AM Ok, so I hit up best buy and bought Resistance and Uncharted. Then went to Target to buy a Blu-Ray movie cause Best Buy was super low on stock from Xmas still and they had Warhawk and Lair on sale. So I bought those too.
A few things. So far I enjoy Lair, much more than Resistance. Granted I only played both for about 20 minutes. Also, I got 300 on BRD and when watching it, it is SUPER noisy. Like picture noise. I had to crank up my TVs Noise Reduction to Maximum. Then it looked pretty damn god, but still really noisy. Any tips on setting up the BRD player to have it give me that crystal clear images they are always touting. Now, the bad part is that my TV wont accept 1080p (but thats going in another thread later today) am I screwed on the BRD with only 1080i? Title: Re: Should I ask for a PS3 for my birthday? Post by: Moaner on January 16, 2008, 11:19:25 AM The BD version of 300 is very grainy. I'm unsure as to whether it's intentional or not. I've noticed BD stuff is more noisy than what I had imagined, and I have a 32" Bravia. I'd like some more insight on that as well.
You can output BD in 720p if you mess with the settings under the system options menu. Otherwise it defaults to 1080i. I'm not sure what type of set you have, does it do 720p? If so, just uncheck 1080i in the video options and it'll default to 720p. Title: Re: Should I ask for a PS3 for my birthday? Post by: Morfiend on January 16, 2008, 11:32:52 AM I have the Sony XBR1 60inch. I'm going to make another thread about it in a minute.
Title: Re: Should I ask for a PS3 for my birthday? Post by: HaemishM on January 16, 2008, 12:18:36 PM I think 300 had intenional digital grain added in as a stylistic choice. It was grainy in the theater.
Title: Re: Should I ask for a PS3 for my birthday? Post by: Morfiend on January 16, 2008, 12:43:41 PM Well, its not just grainy, is like moving noise. The stuff in the background looks like its alive with lots of tiny bugs crawling on it or some thing.
Title: Re: Should I ask for a PS3 for my birthday? Post by: Morfiend on January 16, 2008, 07:05:42 PM I got home and watched some of Resident Evil Extinction. It also is very noisy. Even when I turn my TVs noise reduction to full. It is NOTHING like the crystal clear image I thought I would get from a high def movie. Can anyone help. I am getting very frustrated with this whole thing. In fact I had a very bad day and am considering just taking back the stupid PS3.
Title: Re: Should I ask for a PS3 for my birthday? Post by: Yegolev on January 16, 2008, 07:54:28 PM Both Talladega Nights and The Prestige looked good to me at 1080i, no grain, and my TV is crap. I got nothing.
Title: Re: Should I ask for a PS3 for my birthday? Post by: Morfiend on January 16, 2008, 08:19:52 PM So, I threw in my DVD copy of 300, and it looks fucking horrible. I mean BAD. Really really bad. Like around or worse than normal cable channel on a large HDTV. Honestly, the best image I can get is the HD Discovery Channel. It looks much better than Blu-Ray, also my HD HBO Channel looks much better. This is really really frustrating to me.
Title: Re: Should I ask for a PS3 for my birthday? Post by: Azazel on January 16, 2008, 08:33:55 PM Ironically, this is comforting to me. One of the first DVDs I played on my new 46" HDTV was 300, and let's jus say I was terrified by the image quality. Not that regular TV is all that great up close, but I was expecting greatness from that particular film.
Title: Re: Should I ask for a PS3 for my birthday? Post by: Morfiend on January 16, 2008, 08:45:35 PM Well, after thinking about the horrible image quality of the normal DVD the only thing I can think of is that the PS3 is downgrading the signal, and then the TV, since its the stupid XBR1 is upgrading it again.
I am considering a Sony boycott for life with the way this is all going. Title: Re: Should I ask for a PS3 for my birthday? Post by: Azazel on January 17, 2008, 12:08:51 AM nevermind. I used :google:

Speaking from experience (I'm sure there's better), the best blu-ray movies I've seen are Kingdom of Heaven, Silent Hill, the Pirates sequels, and the last NIN concert disc. Title: Re: Should I ask for a PS3 for my birthday? Post by: MrHat on January 17, 2008, 06:17:20 AM Morf, check out AVS to see what they use as a movie Blu-Ray in order to judge quality.
Then go buy that. Title: Re: Should I ask for a PS3 for my birthday? Post by: Moaner on January 17, 2008, 07:54:59 AM The only thing I can offer is that Planet Earth looks superb for the most part. The 3 BD movies I've seen on my tv are 300, Planet Earth, and Tallidaga Nights. 300 and Tallidaga Nights look like shit while Planet Earth ranges from awe inspiring quality to so-so depending on the scene.
Title: Re: Should I ask for a PS3 for my birthday? Post by: Lounge on January 17, 2008, 11:22:24 AM I'll second the planet earth recommendation. I have been extremely underwhelmed with most blue ray movies so far. For my money though the planet earth blue ray looks FAR superior to the HD broadcast they did.
Another great one is the 2001: A Space Odyssey re-issue they just did. Very impressive for a movie thats 40 years old. Title: Re: Should I ask for a PS3 for my birthday? Post by: rattran on January 17, 2008, 12:05:35 PM The Pirate movies, Hellboy, Kingdom of Heaven, Corpse Bride look great on bluray.
20 Million Miles to Earth, (remastered) 5th Element, Harry Potter stuff, look good. Stargate, Kung-fu Hustle look grainy, pixelated in parts. 300 I have in HD-dvd, and it looks like shit. |
