Really nice winter storm in Cleveland at the moment. I hope the new year finds you warm and safe and dry. The good news is that spring here is due in June or there a bouts. Oh wells, people more from here to Anchorage for the climate. But hey it could be Buffalo. (same shit worse taxes)

Very debatable.  The ghetto(s) in Cleveland are much harder to stumble into.  But OTOH Cleveland downtown has some reasons to exist and you are about twice as likely to not be alone when you are there.  Cincy downtown is a creepy ghost town outside of 8-6 on weekdays.  I've been to both many times but I'm never sure how to answer that question.

I grew up in the Cleveland area, then came to Cincinnati to go to the Architecture school and have been trapped here ever since.  Yes, trapped.   Cincinnati is very much worse than Cleveland in aesthetics, population and atmosphere.  The quote attributed to Mr. Twain gave about the city in the 1800's is just as true today as it was then.


Also, not only is the ghetto in Cincinnti much easier to 'stumble into'.  It IS 2/3 of the city.  You don't walk past Central Avenue during the day, and you don't even drive through there at night.

I grew up and lived an hour away from Cleveland for thirty some-odd years. I'd rather live up here in Alaska in 40 below zero weather than live in NE Ohio, though downtown Cleveland was getting better than it had been.

I live in Lakewood, Ohio which is just to the West of downtown Cleveland (about 1 mile from downtown).

Cleveland has its good and bad points just like any other city. The main problem with Cleveland is people (both here and elsewhere) always want to compare it to other major cities because up until about 1960 it was in the top 10 population wise. Since then the city really has not grown while a good number of other cities have continued to grow (some very quickly). Any more Cleveland is not even in the top 20 (I think it barely rounds out the top 50). Columbus is actually the biggest city in Ohio now. Cleveland is now under half a million people.

Because of this a lot of people still lump Cleveland in with New York and Chicago when talking about major mid-west cities and its just not the case. Cleveland gets compared to those cities and then gets shit on because it does not compare in any way. This has caused a serious identity crisis for Cleveland and a lot of the people who live here. People here still want to think they live in a "big city" like Chicago or NY but in fact that live somewhere more like Omaha or Minneapolis. The only difference is Cleveland has more suburbs so it has more people in "Greater Cleveland."

Having said all that when I look at Cleveland and compare it to similar cities Cleveland blows them all away.

• Three major sports teams that are all FINALLY relevant again
• One of the best orchestras in the world
• Museums that rival any other mid-size city
• Rock & Roll hall of fame
• Incredibly affordable property/houses
• Nationally recognized food scene
• Multiple bar/entertainment districts

Yeah if you can't tell I like living in Cleveland... Unfortunately my wife is one of those people that hates it...

I'm more "interested" in Cinncinnatti since that's where our new datacenter is and I'm 100% certain that's my next business trip.  Uh, don't tell the terrists about this.

Well the Orchestra is ok, I've heard.  There's the Arnoff center for broadway productions, but no chance of doing that on a business trip since they sell out months in advance.   We've got the new modern art musem downtown and the freedom center and that's about it since sports is done for the year.  Oh, wait, we've got a Hocky team too, and they're pretty good I understand.  None of the news stations cover them, though, so I often forget about them.    Hay, there's also the creationism museum right around here! You can go and see how Dinosaurs and humans lived and worked together!

As far as I know the bar scene is fairly dead.  Being that it was right next to the bad area of downtown on Main Street, that's not a surprise.  We leveled the other bar area to build the stadiums for our rocking teams.  :awesome_for_real:

Really, the best scene is in Newport, KY right across the river.  It's where all the new corporate buildings, high-price apartments and nightclubs are opening.  The actual city of Cincinnati is so mired-down in stupidity and high-taxes (for those ballparks) that everyone's gone across the river.

Oh, and have some Skyline when youre here.  A 4-way is the most popular item. (Cinci chili w/ spaghetti, cheese & beans or onion with beans & onion is a 5-way) I can't stand it, but some folks swear by it.

Ian Hunter originally had to release the song as "England Rocks" because nobody in the US wanted to release it. A number of rock bands have said that Cleveland audiences are their favorites in the USA, so the town may not be particularly inspiring, but the concert audiences apparently are.

Yes, they are. There's a reason the big concerts skip Cincinnati and Columbus but make sure to hit Cleveland.  The city loves its music (even if, as Trent Reznor pointed out when he left, the indy support scene sucks.)

I'm actually going to make a point to see this.  Sounds like a hoot.

The one thing I miss about home is the concerts. Everybody, and I mean everybody came to Cleveland, and Richfield Coliseum was just an awesome concert venue, too bad they tore it down.

Then there's Blossom. I can't picture summers there without throwing down a blanket and getting sunburned and drunk while watching Jimmy Buffet perform.

Hell, even the Flats got more acts than most other places. I remember wandering into Peabody's Down Under, plunking down $10 and standing five feet away while Joe Satriani and Living Colour put on a show in the late eighties.
