Title: Key Signing Party!
Post by: Ookii on December 31, 2007, 10:27:39 AM
I saw this on reddit:

(XKCD (http://xkcd.com/364/))

I kind of got it, but upon reading the comments I learned it was referencing a 'key signing party'.

According to Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Key_signing_party):

Quote
In cryptography, a key signing party is an event at which people present their PGP-compatible keys to others in person, who, if they are confident the key actually belongs to the person who claims it, digitally sign the PGP certificate containing that public key and the person's name, etc. This is one way to strengthen the web of trust. Although PGP keys are generally used with personal computers for Internet-related applications, key signing parties themselves generally don't involve computers, since that would give adversaries increased opportunities for subterfuge. Rather, participants write down a string of letters and numbers, called a public key fingerprint, which represents their key. The fingerprint is created by a cryptographic hash function, which condenses the public key down to a unique string, which is shorter and more manageable. Participants exchange these fingerprints as they verify each others' identification. Then, after the party, they obtain the public keys corresponding to the fingerprints they received and digitally sign them.

The entry also offers this awesome picture of a Key Signing Party IN PROGRESS:

I thought it was interesting enough to share, and it's about the geekiest thing I've ever heard of as well.  What I want to know is which F13ers have participated in such an event, because I know at least one person in here has personally verified someone's identity in order to sign their public key.

EDIT: Intense googling has resulted in another more lively party image:

Do these sorts of things have refreshments?  If not, I'm pretty sure I'm not interested.

Party is a misleading term.  I submit Key Signing Parley.

I've met somebody in a bar for the primary purpose of exchanging PGP keys. I have also been present at geeky social events that involved many keys being exchanged although that was not the excuse for the social event.

We should create a subforum for marital disputes.

I'm with Helm.  I read all the wiki crap and I'm still in the dark.  Nothing new for me, granted.

I hear rumors that Public/Private Key Methodology has been broken.  Has anyone seen any substancial claims of this?

Hah, and you probably thought it was an affair!  This reminds me of the Fantasy Baseball scene in "Knocked Up".

Did you read the Wiki entry on public key encryption?:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Public-key_cryptography

Which part(s) did you not understand?

Its so a bunch of geeks who think someone actually cares what the hell they have to say can communicate using their "sekret decoder rings" and think they are cool. The "party" is to exchange the needed keys face to face, prior to communication commencing.

I get it and I don't care. I'm such a luddite, it's ironic that I'm a system admin (granted it's a small system). I'm the king of sneakernet when everyone is library2.0 and whatnot. No, the library doesn't need a blog, wiki and myspace page, ffs. Especially if I have to admin them, we get enough tits in person without opening it up to the whole fucking web.
