Post by: rattran on December 26, 2007, 01:19:45 PM You should do what I do, cut out the giving part and just buy yourself presents!
That said, I got an unexpected check from my mom, and a handmade card from my niece and nephew. So I'll spend the check on slightly inappropriate gifts for the wee ones. Title: Re: List your loot! Something in the $200-400 range would be fine. I'm still upset over losing well over a thousand pictures when my hard drive fried itself a few months ago (nothing recoverable). Think I'll get a external hard drive when I pick up the new camera... Of course, the reason I even NEED a new camera is because my old one was stolen from my luggage while it was lost in Chicago and I was in Europe, about a month after my hard drive exploded. I'm going to go cry in the corner now. Title: Re: List your loot! :awesome_for_real: Oh, and the 42" Samsung 1080p (65 series) is sexy too. I bought that myself though. Title: Re: List your loot! I like my Canon Digital Rebel XT (http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ModelInfoAct&fcategoryid=139&modelid=11154) for vacation photos, but anything that size is a PITA to carry around. Nothing beats a point-n-shoot camera for good easy pictures - personally I use the Olympus Stylus (http://olympusamerica.com/cpg_section/product.asp?product=1313) for a pocket camera. The nice thing about the Rebel is that I can swap out lenses with it depending on what I'm snapping. Title: Re: List your loot! Post by: lamaros on December 26, 2007, 08:41:13 PM Return To Cookie Mountain. EXCELLENT choice. Desperate Youths, Bloodthirsty Babes is also gold. Aye! I already have DY,BB and Young Liars, and borrowed a friends copy of Cookie Mountain. It is indeed amazing. And conveniently cheap! (I normally don't buy from stores here as CDs go for 20-30$ AU and I can get them for 10-15 online), but I had to spend the voucher. Now I just have to see them live. I bought myself some presents too :) So far I am very pleased! Title: Re: List your loot! Post by: Jain Zar on December 26, 2007, 09:14:41 PM I spent: Around 200 bucks in stuff.
I got: About 45 bucks in stuff. What I got (still have 1 gift I won't get till later, but its a sub 10 dollar gift.): Crossbows & Catapults big expansion and tickets to AVP2. That's from a friend. It was my GOOD present. Now to the shit present, because I have such HATRED for it I just have to describe the fucking insult that it was. I gave my cousin & uncle a 20 dollar gift card each, plus a 4 pack of Red Bull, those tube stacker baby toy things for my cousin's son, and a plush small Cthulhu for his girlfriend's daughter, and the obligatory package of candy canes. They gave me: A FUCKING SMALL TIN OF POPCORN. Not only was it a sub 5 dollar gift when I dropped a good 65 on them, but as I am on a diet I have constantly brought up and lost 50 pounds on, its also a complete slap in the face. No thought, effort, or anything was spent on it. It shows a complete lack of understanding of me, or any desire to find out, even though we have lived a few short miles from each other. I'm not buying any of them anything this year. And his son isn't getting anything for his birthday this year either. That shit ruined my first Christmas Eve where I haven't had to work in a good 6 years or more. (Last time I was off was when Age of Empires 2 came out I think.) Title: Re: List your loot! Post by: Strazos on December 26, 2007, 09:19:18 PM I specifically told anyone who would possibly get my a gift to give me nothing. I had no intention of giving anyone anything (I like being able to pay bills, thx), and more importantly, I didn't really care to receive anything myself.
I asked my mom what she wanted, and she said her present to me was to get her nothing. She ended up getting my Rosetta Stone - Japanese (level 1). I had told her to get me nothing, but I knew she would insist on getting Something, so I told her to get me that if anything. Apparently, I could have weaseled a new TV out of her instead, but I'd rather she pay her bills than get me a TV. I really don't care for this holiday much anymore. Short version: I got: Rosetta Stone - JP (level 1) I gave: Nothing. (I paid the 1-Day shipping on a book for my friend to give someone else for a "dirty polyanna" gift. Does that count?) Title: Re: List your loot! Post by: schild on December 26, 2007, 09:19:39 PM I spent: Around 200 bucks in stuff. I got: About 45 bucks in stuff. Luckily the next day I had good chow and got to play some Warhammer 40K afterwards. Tau vs Chaos Marines. Both armies were mine, but my friend played back in 2nd ed days. Not playing his Blood Angels helped him have more fun in the dark new world of no armor save modifiers. He won, as eventually even Chaos Marine Terminators die if you pump enough firepower out at them. Title: Re: List your loot! Post by: Yegolev on December 27, 2007, 07:53:38 AM This holiday season has been kinda crappy for me personally, but this is a happy place so I will spare you the whines.
Gave a scarf to the wife. I was going to give some singing cat toys that I found on dealextreme.com but they are sold out since I waited too long. I suck at gifting. A sort-of present is a new pool, which might begin being constructed this week if the mud dries out a bit. The boy got too many things to list. One was a SmartCycle which he loves much more than I thought he would. He also got an air hockey table, but that's also a present for my wife and me, ho ho! I asked for the same thing I always do, and once again didn't get it: nothing. Instead I got two gift cards (didn't look at the value), four shirts (last year was a Pants Year), black gloves, a piece of a meteor that landed in Romania, a DVD of Bowie music videos, a Bowie CD, and a set of collapsible rubber bowls with a collander and enormous spoon. They are red and don't match my kitchen, but that's OK. Collapsible kitchen stuff is great. Title: Re: List your loot! I can't just toss it out, so it gets to live in the drawer for a while and has an opportunity to demonstrate its worth to me. It knows I mean business since it witnessed the culling of Large Plastic Spork and Bent Potato Masher. Title: Re: List your loot! My fiancee is smart and either looks on my amazon list (victorinox paring knife!) or sneaks a peak at the list I keep on the fridge. Anyway, mom got me some 'herb slicer' thing, which is a bunch of rotary blades on a stick. She got me one a few years ago that was like a half clamshell and I could never get the goddamned thing clean, everything just stuck inside it...really, I'm pretty good with a knife. It's fast and easy to clean. So the herb slicer thingy sits alongside the other stuff I got that's useful. It's On Notice, and it knows it. Goddamned gadgets. Title: Re: List your loot! Post by: Stormwaltz on December 27, 2007, 10:33:17 AM Jeremiah got a "kiddie" keyboard because he likes making music (well, he likes making noise, anyway), an interesting magnetic toy that stays out of daddy's office, a couple of "Max & Ruby" DVDs, and a few cheap plastic toys from the grandparents that pretty much broke straight out of the box.
We got a Wii in November. With our car issues ($4K in damages, most of which the insurance company refuses to pay), I told my wife that was it. I lied. I got her the Bones Season 1 box set because she's a David Boreanaz fan, and I'll get her the Harry Potter movie today. I got two books from my striking writer friend in L.A: Declare (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0380798360/ref=wl_it_dp?ie=UTF8&coliid=I2JBGP14341O03&colid=2Z4B3U66JP5FJ) and The Great Pacific War: A History of the American-Japanese Campaign of 1931-1933 (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1557095574/ref=wl_it_dp?ie=UTF8&coliid=I2DH7M9RFEHSLQ&colid=2Z4B3U66JP5FJ). The former was recommended by Charles Stross in "The Atrocity Archives," which was the most entertaining bookI've read in a couple of years. The latter could be called an alt-history, but since it was written in 1925, by a naval analyst attempting to illustrate the abilities of the new Japanese "Great Power" muscle to the American public, it's technically not. Title: Re: List your loot! Post by: Rasix on December 27, 2007, 05:08:36 PM I liked my haul.

Pixies, "Wave of Mutilation" best of CD Some boxers. I also got sick too. I feel horrible right now. Title: Re: List your loot! Post by: Prospero on December 27, 2007, 05:44:37 PM We were living la vida poor new homeowner this year, so we mostly gave homebaked cookies, along with a single nice-ish gift for close friends and family members. My wife made me a Jane hat(rock), and I also got a rad HL2 lithograph (http://store.valvesoftware.com/productshowcase/img.productshowcase/HL2ep2Litho/Zoom_HL2ep2Litho_01.jpg). I gave a $300 restaurant dinner, about $100 in gift cards, a trip to the Reagan Library (about $75 for everyone's admissions), and an entry-level Dell laptop. Title: Re: List your loot! Title: Re: List your loot! Post by: Prospero on December 27, 2007, 05:57:13 PM I like me some Laphroaig, but I can't even imagine what that is like in cask strength. :ye_gods:

I expect my apartment to reek of peat for a week. :drill: Title: Re: List your loot! Post by: Signe on December 27, 2007, 06:12:20 PM Righ got some of that Laphroaig quarter cask stuff and I tasted it. (usually I only swish whisky around and spit it out when I have a toothache or something and chance getting that "look") It was so smooth. It made me wish I drank more. Maybe I'll start!
Title: Re: List your loot! Post by: geldonyetich2 on December 27, 2007, 06:32:57 PM A taller, thinner version of this cup (http://www.coffeeteagifts.com/s82-84084.html).
A 3-book Garfield anthology (I'd have preferred Get Fuzzy). A Chocolate Orange (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Terry's_Chocolate_Orange), Pina-Colada Flavored. $75 EbGames Gift Certificate. $40 Target Gift Certificate. Money I ultimately burnt in adopting a kitten. Donation-related bric-a-brac. (A bad full of fake chinese luck charms). Terry Pratchett's "Making Money". Cheap office supplies and undergarments. Christmas is also my Birthday. Title: Re: List your loot! Post by: Signe on December 27, 2007, 06:45:43 PM I always stuff a Terry's Choccie Orange up Righ's stocking. I didn't know they came in anything but dark and milk.
MERRY BIRTHDAY!!! (http://www.mommiescamelot.com/forum/images/smilies/celebrate.gif) Title: Re: List your loot! Post by: Yegolev on December 27, 2007, 08:09:17 PM Is that the big ball that you whack before you eat it?
Title: Re: List your loot! Post by: Ironwood on December 28, 2007, 02:48:43 AM Yeah, the centre stem is the tastiest bit.
I got a lot of stuff but the one that bugs me is Crysis. A remake of Far Cry that makes my machine howl and beg like a whipped cur. The new year is going to bring a new mobo, chip and Video Card now. :uhrr: Title: Re: List your loot! Post by: WayAbvPar on December 28, 2007, 10:07:20 AM I liked my haul. Some of the stuff we went out and bought with various sources of Xmas money.

Post by: Johny Cee on December 29, 2007, 07:45:20 PM Had the belated Christmas opening of presents today. My favorite gift:
Me Write Book (http://www.amazon.com/Me-Write-Book-Bigfoot-Memoir/dp/0452286859/ref=pd_bbs_2?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1198986520&sr=8-2) Read the first few pages, looks like comedy gold. Title: Re: List your loot! Post by: Strazos on December 29, 2007, 09:30:27 PM Oh, I also got 2 tickets to the Flyers vs Sharks hockey game in Feb, apparently.
Yeah, my mom gets them for cheap through her job, but they're still great seats. The $10 parking half a mile away? Not so great in the cold. Almost as bad as the traffic will be (Foo Fighters are playing right next door the same night). Title: Re: List your loot! Title: Re: List your loot! Post by: schild on December 31, 2007, 04:39:59 PM My only gift.
I got myself a Sony eReader today. Title: Re: List your loot! Post by: Venkman on December 31, 2007, 06:28:25 PM iPod touch
Standing Trouser press (ultimate snooty gift :-) ) Books Movies (now on said Touch) My kids made out like bandits too  Title: Re: List your loot! Post by: Strazos on December 31, 2007, 08:44:11 PM That press, is it basically a giant iron or something?
I really hate Ironing. In fact, if my pants are not....ok coming out of the dryer....they might just get washed again. Sometimes hanging them in the bathroom while I take a shower does the trick though. Title: Re: List your loot! Post by: Merusk on January 01, 2008, 06:11:09 AM I really hate Ironing. No need to wash them again, just wet-down a towel and toss it in the dryer with the pants. Also, make sure you remove the pants as soon as the dry cycle is done, and they don't get wrinkled. It's the bomb. A linux (Xandros) laptop with OpenOffice, Mozilla/Thunderbird, Skype, etc. "It just works". Weighs 2 lbs. Only drawback is a full but smallish keyboard and monitor, both of which can be swapped out with USB monitor/keyboard etc. Best piece of kit I've seen in a long time. Post by: schild on January 01, 2008, 12:13:52 PM The biggest problem is the battery, actually.

It's the 3300 model (http://www.corbypress.com/product_consumer.asp), though in black and wood. You can get them to hang on the wall too. It's basically a heating pad of sorts. Takes about 30 minutes, but is safe enough to leave the pants in overnight. The thing I really like is that it maintains the creases. I used to get my pants pressed once a month or so, but I got lazy about it. And I hate ironing. Next Christmas I'm hoping to get one that does shirts :-) Title: Re: List your loot! I almost picked one of these up for myself over the holidays but decided on a bunch of games instead. I don't have a legitimate use for one but I've wanted a god damn pocket pc since I was a kid and saw Penny's computer book thing in Inspector Gadget. I didn't get much loot this Christmas, just some Linen. I knew that would be the case months ago though and have spoiled myself rotten with games. Title: Re: List your loot! You really never have to iron anything, if you're good about drying to slightly damp, removing immediately after the dryer stops, and then hanging up with the appropriate hangers.
