Title: Steam Sale 10%-50% Off Everything
Post by: schild on December 24, 2007, 12:13:04 PM
Pick up Garry's Mod if you haven't.

Just picked up Trackmania United myself.

You only save $1 on Garry's Mod (it was already pretty cheap).  Vampire: Bloodlines went down from $20 to $10 though.

The ghost of Tim Cain approaches you and lets forth a wistful moan.
"Things could have been so different..."

You know, I bought Bioshock like 6 days ago...  not sure how on sale it is but weak.

I was thinking of buying Quake2, CS:S, DMC3 & possibly that Dues Ex game everyone mentions from time to time for being good, or was that the 2nd one that was good?  Silly SP games...

First one. Deus Ex, from the Latin "deus ex machina" (god from the machine). It's more than seven years old, so if you do want it, make sure you want it for the plot. It's not just mentioned from time to time for being good, it's one of the most awarded games in history.

Meh. Try this. I bought the Popcap Games collection (for my Mum's computer) on fucking Christmas Eve. It's only ten bucks difference, but fuck.

Also, unless/until Garry's Mod has some direct point to it beyond fucking around with source, it's pointless to me.

Not that it wasn't a bargain before, but this sale brought Orange Box down to $37 USD, so I (finally) bought it. Time to play Portal...

God I almost want to buy two orange boxes to gift to somebody later in life at that pricepoint...

How long is this going on?  I won't be near my Steam account again until Jan. 8th and I wanted to pick up CoD4.

I picked up Deus Ex a few weeks ago myself, after getting sick of hearing people talk about it.  I have to be honest, I found it too hard to play to get into the storyline (which admittedly seems awesome).  I couldn't get a comfortable handle on the inventory system, among other things.

Not sure how long the sale will run for, but CoD4 is only 5 bucks off, so $45 USD anyhow. But, Psychonauts is only $10, Bioshock $37, and Civ4 $30.

Dec 24 - Jan 1, but the difference is only $5 so I wouldn't go scrambling to an internet cafe to get on your Steam account.

Psychonauts for $10 and $13 off Bioshock? Fuck yes. Glad I waited until now on those puppies.

I guess I can finally pick up STALKER for $22?  Curiosity is killing me.

New sale on Steam: Rockstar's games on sale for a week (http://steampowered.com/v/index.php?publisher=rockstar).  Notables are GTA 1-3 + VC + SA for $27 and Max Payne 1 & 2 for $13.45.

Those two bundles are pretty damn tempting, the whole collection (at $54), not so much.

Gish is also 50% off right now, coming in at a big 5 bucks. Highly recommended if you like 2D side scrollers. It is still one of my favorites.

Will have to pick up Max Payne, Gish, and Manhunt.

Did you not play Manhunt?  Or did you play it and like it so much that you want to play it again?

Either way,  :ye_gods:

Also, Gish is fucked up, comes to $9.95 in the basket.

Fixes itself after you put in your card.

I want to see what ultraviolence in a game is like.

That's pretty much the reason to play Manhunt.  I'm just surprised that you hadn't done it already.

It's actually not a terrible game.  Not a "good" game, really, but a lot better than, say, WolfQuest.

Really gotta love those steam offers. Discounts bundled with the fact that I get to pay the actual Dollar rate instead of that bullshit 1:1 ratio like in the stores makes for a very happy Tebonas right now.

Ya, I'm about ready to buy Civ4 + Beyond the Sword for $50 since it's only like 15 more than what I saw in the store for Beyond the Sword by itself, plus, then I don't have to bother with cds.

Gods I hate CDs.

You may be able to activate your original Civ4 on Steam and just buy BtS on Steam.  I don't remember if the CD keys for Civ4 are on the "plays nice with Steam" list though, but it's worth a shot.

Just wanted to mention that if you like digital distribution, and have a taste for strategy games or quasi-obscure East European games, you should check out Gamersgate  (http://www.gamersgate.com/) at least once.

This week they added Thief Gold for $15 and World in Conflict for $50.

Do they have DRM attached to them?

I'm getting the exact same issue....

Any US or anywhere else residents want to check and see what you get? I'm hoping it's a Steam error, not a regional blockout.

Yep, looks like Australia is locked out of Rockstar. Completely.

Even the games that were released here.

You can still get them. All. Just not via Steam.

Not in the sense of Starforce. I believe they "dial home" when you start the game to confirm you have a valid serial number. I can only say that I've never had any problem.

Post by: Azazel on January 09, 2008, 06:55:58 PM
So Steam style then? Do they have a "go offline" mode?

From the FAQ:

Quote
Q: Do I need an Internet connection in order to play the game?
A: No. An internet connection is only needed during the installation process and the first time you run the game. After that no more internet connection is required.

I'm intrigued by it.

Title: Re: Steam Sale 10%-50% Off Everything
Post by: Azazel on January 10, 2008, 06:46:52 PM
As a minor update to this, the entire Rockstar catalogue is OMGZBANNEDZOR to Australia.
Even titles that were, you know, released in full, unmodified form with no issues and can still be found on the cheap rack from time to time.

I'm looking at YOU, Max Payne 1 and 2.

Title: Re: Steam Sale 10%-50% Off Everything
Post by: KallDrexx on January 10, 2008, 10:02:29 PM
Out of curiosity, did you find an actual confirmation of this?

Title: Re: Steam Sale 10%-50% Off Everything
Post by: Azazel on January 10, 2008, 10:53:30 PM
Yes.

I followed the link from last page. Since I'm in Australia it changed/defaulted to a nearly-blank content page, but with sidebars, header, footer intact.

I followed the sidebar link: Rockstar Games Brings Full Line-up to Steam, which leads to
http://steampowered.com/v/index.php?area=news&id=1395&cc=AU

Click on the hyperlink for "The Rockstar Collection", get a birthdate page, and instead get the list of all Steam games:
http://storefront.steampowered.com/v/index.php?area=all&cc=AU

Change that AU on the end of the URL to a US, and suddenly the front page includes GTA3, GTA:SA, GTA: VC and Max Payne.

Click on Max Payne, which was released here in Aust totally unmolested. The info comes up. Click on "purchase" and "Got Steam? comes up. Click "Yes, yes I do" and Steam loads up.

Then you get an error message "This subscription is not available for purchase in your country" with a click-for-more-info link.

Which then gives us this page:
http://support.steampowered.com/cgi-bin/steampowered.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=488&l=english

Interestingly, this page doesn't have any mention of Rockstar, but shows that Aussies and Kiwis are becoming proper fucked on Steam. Combine this bullshit with the Activision price bump on Call of Duty 4 and you have a tasty dish of DRM and region-locking.

I'm glad I only buy Valve games and super-discounted shit from Steam... other stuff is always avaialble one way or another. Usually legally, too. There's lots of cheap brand-new game sellers in the UK and Europe via eBay. Usually cost you 1/4 to 1/2 what local merchants are charging..

Or getting the game(s) as a gift maybe?  I do hope it would throw an error if they can't even download it versus just eating up the gift code.
