Title: CD Player
Post by: dusematic on December 22, 2007, 01:49:31 PM
I need to get my Mom a CD player for Christmas.  A portable one.  Like a Discman.  It needs to be idiot-proof.  She will use it for walking.  She could never figure out how to transfer songs to an MP3 player, so that's out.  Any ideas?  Preferably something I could get at a major retailer.

Umm.. get something with anti-skipping.

Other then that, cd players are pretty much foolproof now.  Hard to get a real crappy one unless you don't wanna spend over 20 bucks.  The one I picked up at walmart was a sony, and Ive had it for 3 years and it was like 30 bucks.

I haven't even seen a CD player in the wild since like '99.  That's why I was asking.

Walmart is your best bet. Or target. Saw one there recently.

Just wondering, is she going to be jogging like it's 1995?

You can still get them at most stores, wally, target, best buy.  Just don't expect a huge selection.

A trained chimp could load an MP3 player. Give you mom some credit and get her something useful.

You could also try the local pawn shop.

My dad, who's generally a Luddite, had a portable CD player on his wish list last Christmas.  I said "fuck that clunky antiquated shit," decided to give him the benefit of the doubt, and got him an iPod Shuffle.  He now takes it with him everywhere he goes.

If your mother owns a computer and knows how to turn it on, she can use iTunes to load an iPod.

My father-in-law wanted a CD player to put on his desk at work. I tried to talk my wife and her mother into getting him an MP3 player and a docking station of some kind but they both argued that it was 'too complicated'. So now he's got some crappy no-name boombox instead of something cool.

I hate luddites.

Ipods are way easier to use than any old CD player.  Ive got two portable CD players and my original Nano is still the player of choice.

DRAG AND DROP IS LOVE.

My 100 dollar Sony CD from 93 still works fine, (Surprising for a Sony product.  My 96 boombox doesn't though..) and some generic one I got the last year my company gave out Christmas presents to the employees does too.  And is even better.

But the Ipod Nano is the king.  And I will use it till it dies out and by then hopefully Nanos will be in 25 gig formats and I will never need another music player ever again.

Excepting they put in batteries you can't remove so you HAVE to upgrade every so many years.

FUCKERS.

Its harder than you think to get a license to own a chimpanzee.

Dude my Mom doesn't use computers.  She has to ask me every damn time how to get on the internet, even though all she has to do is double click internet explorer.  There are lots of people over 50 exactly like her.

I would actually go one step further and say the software for the Zune is easier to use the iTunes.  The font is big the interface is pretty and has few options, and the program itself is very forgiving (no ejecting needed).

If I had a computer challenged person who needed an mp3 player I'd get them a Zune hands down.  That said, the Zune 30GB I was given sucks ass and I wish I had one of those new shiny ones that can do H.264 Mp4.
