I have -- I'm just in the last semester of my Master's program (and I work a real, 40+ professional job as well) so I haven't been playing much of anything since August.

This spring I actually do the last of my thesis work, and I should have more time. Of course, we're considering a second child -- so maybe I'll learn the fun of rocking babies while waiting at a gatecamp. :)

Go to one of the offices (I'm at work but I think it's choose People and Places from the left menubar -> Corporations from the drop-down -> f13 -> right-click on correct result -> Show Info -> Offices).  Go there, dock, find the F13 office (or HQ tab if you go to that one) and press "Apply".  Remember to write a role-playing element in the application form, as we're pretty strict about in-character RP and you don't want to start on the wrong foot.

Can someone sticky this so we don't lose it down the list?

So I have a question, my trial ends in two days so can I just buy a time card and keep playing or do I need to actually pay for the game first and get a free month and then start using time cards. I am not sure how this works.

Just need a time code or subscribe to it. The time code is nice if you don't think you'll play much beyond 30 days. Otherwise you can subscribe and they'll charge your CC every month for you.

No need to buy the game, and there is no free month (just a free 2 weeks).

Yep, you can.  Just apply at the office mentioned in the recruitment thread.  Also, join the F13 channel as soon as you want to speak to f13ers, and the war channel (stated in the MOTD for the F13 channel, i think) when you sign up.

Just ask lots of questions in the F13  chat room, you'll be fine. And don't be afraid to ask for some cash, just make sure you know what you are going to do with it if asked. (Don't answer booze and loose women). (Well you can answer that, but you might have to share).

I'd say do the tutorial missions (2) plus the other series of 10 missions for the agent you get referred to.  Teaches you some of the basics, gives you a few ships and modules, and about 300k.  Then I guess set autopilot for the offices mentioned and join up, and ask questions here or in-game.  Your priorities will be to purchase some of the skills needed to round up your frigate piloting abilities a bit more and set them to train, and then getting used to the controls etc. for the op this weekend.  I'd say run some missions with someone.

The missions are actually tailored to your school; if you picked military you'll get combat missions, if you picked industry you'll get missions that teach you how to manufacture, research, do invention, etc.   I've done the combat missions, and like I said they give you frigates (and then suggest you use them in the next mission), some weapons, modules (afterburner, webifier, etc), and quite a bit of cash (for a newbie).

I'm not a big fan of the Star Wars novels mostly just because I get sick of most of them centering on Luke, Han, Lando etc.. like they are the only people of importance in the entire universe.  The Thrawn Triology ended up being one of my favorite series of books though and now I try to use that as my online name in whatever I can.  (Pretty much every decent variation of the name I could think of was used in EvE already, even tried to play around with the full name - Mitth'raw'nuruodo)
