Fuck I'm bored today.

Someone do something exciting.

I'm ordering a bunch of stuff from China and making a spam thread in the MMOG forum. What are you doing?

I'm trying to figure out wether or not I like this show. (http://link.brightcove.com/services/link/bcpid1243698358/bclid1313716816/bctid1312371790)  Someone has described them as coming close to The Kids in the Hall and while I think they're funny I don't think they're quite there yet.

Dr. Twister has always been a pretty decent fellow toward me. There have certainly been no stalking incidents.

I think you're just too sexy for your hat, Joe.

In short, update your blog before I stalk you.

From the Online Gaming Wiki (http://wiki.onlinegamers.org/index.php?title=Dr._Twister)

Quote
Dr. Twister used to document MMORPG bugs and exploits, for the purposes of holding companies accountable for their sub-par products. Was considered a generally strange person. His sites had a rather high 1337 h4x0r n00b vs. actual exploit ratio, especially towards the end, when his hosting imploded.

It smacks of truth.

By the way, someone calling themselves Dr Twister has just started editing Wikipedia. The only change they have made so far is a minor change to the Lum the Mad article. I'm sure this means nothing. Incidentally, did any of you rob my house outside Moonglow?

That "minor change" is linking to his own, non-existent Wikipage (leaving the comment about his snaking lumthemad.com untouched). Maybe he wants someone to copy the OLGWiki entry over. He asked me to add him on LinkedIn as well. I did because I'm JUST THAT NICE.  :awesome_for_real: I don't think his chances of getting a job at NCsoft are that good, though, considering I work on the same floor as ex-GM Ironwill and ex-GM Gabriel is up the hall. And they remember. OH THEY REMEMBER.

Mr. Orange, if some of you remember his wholly unintentionally dadaist stream of commentary on eq.drtwister.com, surfaced briefly in my blog comments as well, but I eventually had to IP block him as a nuisance.

You know, I thought it was so strange that the Dr. Twister tags starting popping up on Broken Toys' front page yesterday.

Now I realize they were kind of like the air bubbles on the surface of the ocean, heralding the imminent arrival of Shitzilla.

You don't rob a house, you burgle houses.  Robbery is the taking of someone's stuff through the threat of violence, burglary is the theft of unattended items by breaking into someone else's property.

Being blacklisted in the MMO industry hasn't hurt my career though. I just started a new blog about cooking fries and shit, and I'll tell you, there are some serious discussions about the repercussions of canola vs. beef fat deep frying going on there.

One dude was all like "At Wendy's we microwave our fries" and I was like ROFL. That's just the kind of rapid submergement cuisine technician n00bs you get when you start a blog. They think anyone can do this shit.

Nah seriously Lum dude Dr. Twister and I are sorry.

Quote from: Lum

[14:43] Lum_ He publicized the corrupt UO GM who was selling property he created on eBay, for example. That was very much something that needed to happen (the publicity, not the corruption) and in that sense he was actually good for the game he was covering, since OSI went to great lengths to clean up their own house in the aftermath.

I guess the guy wasn't all bad.

I mean, at this point we've all realized that Twister's approach was absolutely fucking correct, right?

The main reason it wasn't so obvious at the time was perspective -- people were still under the spell that what happened in any given MMO really mattered, or that ranting against the void would help.  I enjoyed Lum's work immensely (And Mu's, if we're kickin it old-skoo), but Twister probably did more to actually impact MMOs for the better than Lum's rants did.  Lum's efforts, in effect, made MMOers feel slightly better about getting anally raped, whereas Twister at least spread it around a bit.  Twister's approach is the one that gets results.

I'd still like to see a picture of Lum and Twister meeting with a handshake, MLK-meets-Malcolm-X style.  If only to erase the image of him meeting SirBruce.

Twister knew then what (I'd hope) we all know now:  The only way devs make stopping exploits a priority is if you hold their feet to the fire by abusing the hell out of them.

If only that was the motivation for most exploiters.  People abuse exploits to gain an advantage... they only want them fixed when enough people know about them that their advantage has been minimized.  People suck.

Sausage burglar.

SAUSAGE BURGLAR.

FOAD.

Publicizing the exploits so that the game devolves into poo-flinging asshatery is absolutely not the way to make anything better.

It was internet terrorism then and it's internet terrorism now.

Responsible Disclosure (http://www.whitehats.ca/main/about_us/policies/draft-christey-wysopal-vuln-disclosure-00.txt). That's about vulnerabilities in software general, but I think it applies to exploits in MMORPGs too. Bottom line: if a vendor is not making progress to fix the vulnerability then it's OK to publish it to warn their customers. (I don't know what guidelines the individual in question followed.)

Title: Re: I'm just going to post this out in the open.
Post by: Lum on December 06, 2007, 12:06:08 PM
The individual in question would wait until the coders were home on Friday night before posting exploits, specifically so people could have as much time as possible to exploit them before the coders would get called in on late Friday night to pull an all nighter to fix. Amazingly, this did not endear the individual in question to the development team, which broke his heart when they then failed to give his site proper respect and interviews and the like.

As opposed to, you know, simply letting the coders know they existed, when they could fix them during normal working hours. Contrary to popular belief dupe bugs are not just swept under the rug until someone FIGHTS TEH POWAH and posts them in public.

Title: Re: I'm just going to post this out in the open.
Post by: Hoax on December 06, 2007, 12:49:20 PM
Considering I've seen that happen in multiple games & that when bugs finally become well known you always have people claiming they reported them in betaX all the circumstantial evidence says they are totally swept under the rug until someone FIGHTS TEH POWAH.

Plus said fight usually leads to lulz which means its win-win in my book.

*run and rug mean different things to different people, FIXT*

Yeah, he just liked to cheat, and fuck with people, pretty much. Well-publicized haxxor is all; what separated him from the rest was he could run a decent-looking website back then, and he formed a community out of sharing sploits.

And I still say "burglarized" sometimes.

I only remember Dr. Twister from that one time he linked to a picture of a bunch of EQ developers to mock them.  Only, through the magic of Internet wizardry, it was some sort of live direct link and the EQ guys changed it.  So Twister's own site had a picture on the front page mocking him.

Ok I'm bored now.

I'm sitting at home trying to figure out how to spend my gaming time.  WOW is all about my "raid schedule" which I ignore 50% of the time.  Other than raiding the game is finished as far as I'm concerned.

I have Call of Duty 4 and Mass Effect sitting there I don't feel like playing right now.

Should I feel dirty with the fact I feel like trying EVE again for the fifth time?

Do I need help?  Is there a group for this?  Some sort of program?

Eh, get some friends, go to a bar, play some pool, talk yourself into becoming infatuated with the cute bartender. Want your mind off of shitty games, then that usually works.

You also may shake the feeling that you're TOTALLY wasting your life, which is always a huge fucking plus in my book.

Raiding in WoW brings on manic depression for me. I have to make sure to clear my house of all sharpened or pointed objects before I go to a scheduled raid.
