Is there a way to turn off all chat channels in this game that aren't /tell or /group?  The Trade channel is making me insane and I'm at the point where I want to remove my chat window altogether.  Any help appreciated.

Right click on the tab for the window you want to mess with, and you'll have an option in the menu for chat channels and such.  You can uncheck whichever ones you don't want to receive.  Anymore, I shut off general and trade with every new character.

I tried that but trade didn't seem to be one of the channel options that I could squelch.  I'll look again this evening.

For Trade, you might have to be in a city for it to work.  Same for GuildRecruitment (although you will immediately re-join that one until you uncheck "Automatically join recruitment channel" from the Interface Options window)

I usually do /chatlist to list them all, followed by /leave 1 /leave 2 /leave 3 etc. for any of the public channels.

You can only hide the say, emote, guild, officer, raid, and party channels by right-clicking the tab of the chat window where they're displayed and unchecking them from being displayed in that window.

When spam is annoying me I usually make a new window and move it to the back then assign all the spam channels to it. Saves having to bother rejoining if I want to read them for some reason.

Good tip.  There's absolutely no chance that I'll ever want to read those channels again. 

But if you get rid of trade how will you know about the latest Chuck Norris and Blinkstrike jokes?

Also, under the "social" menu ('o' by default, I think), there's a "chat" tab, which lists all the channels you're on, and who else is on them.  You can right click on the channel to leave it, or on the other players to mute them, or whatever.

/leave 5
/leave 6
/leave 7
/leave 8
/leave 9


That should fix the problems.

If you want to leave a specific channel do /chatlist and it will list all the channels you are part of like /2.Trade, so you know what number to leave.

If you leave the channels, you have to rejoin them if you ever have any use for them (say trade or /general for a zone), I find it best to just uncheck those channels in the pulldown on chat window.

But that is all an old throwback to when I needed to make sure my channel numbers didn't mess up because we did all of our coordination in several different custom channels and it is not so kosher to say "my god I hate warrior X" in the "warrior/puller" channel when you meant to say that in the hunter channel :p

Actually, for me, /join trade, /leave 2 is pretty fast to type.

I typically leave everything because the guild has extra channels, and I'd rather those be /1 and /2 when I talk, rather than /7 and /8.

I want to thank each and every one of you for the help.  I've been playing a bit this weekend and turning off the global trade channels has made the game much more enjoyable.  I guess I need to come to grips with the fact that I'm an antisocial twit. 

If you frame it in the terms of "most of the people who talk in /1 /2 /3 etc are sociopathic twits" it is equally as accurate, and is better on the self-esteem.

I'm a scientist.  I gave up self-esteem years ago. 

I wish Blizzard would allow people to use the LFG channel without having to go through the interface like it used to be.

Trade has now become what the LFG channel used to be, which is basically global Barrens chat.

I actually do use Trade.  On the plus side, I'm getting better at mentally filtering the noise.

/leave 2 saved my life.  I'm not kidding.  After 10 mins of the Trade channel I was ready to push a pair of scissors through my brain.

You fit in much better than you give yourself credit.  I shut EVERYTHING off for every new character.  I have NEVER turned them back on.

Oh, now your true reason for scissors to the brain will be the folks that keep chat on, but still complain to you how somebody is being an ass there in guildchat.

I shut that off so I didn't have to hear it.  Please don't recreate it in guild chat.  I will have to purchase a gun if you do.

Of course, I shut off guild chat from time to time too.  Yes, I'm that guy.  Guilty as charged...

I'm pretty good about ignoring the chat in /2 for the most part. What drives me ABSOLUTELY crazy is the /bg guy that's going on and on about what a bunch of 'nubz' we all are in AB, and I look at the map and he's a sitting at the other port-in-keep camping the GY.

I had general off for a long time, but then I learned to stop worrying and love the Chuck Norris spam.

Actually, I figured out how to press people's buttons and give them a hard time, and it became more entertaining than not.  YMMV, of course.

What I hate about that asshole is he sucks in a few people to argue with him about who is the bigger nub and now your short handed by 2-5 people. Then the people who don't PvP all that often just get demoralized and halfass/giveup on the fight and your screwed totally.

No kidding.

I've been playing BGs lately on my (alliance) shaman, and AB/EOTS is a disaster. It's not only a gear or 'player skill' difference (though I've noticed a lot of newer players trying to get marks, which I don't have a problem with -- everyone starts somewhere), but haughty asshats who spam /bg with "omg alliance you all suck l2p" when their performance is usually a lot worse than the ones they're trying to berate. Yeah, I'm looking at you, NE_hunter_897 farming midfield (not the flag area, but midfield between two towers) in EOTS with 0 kills, 9 deaths, and less damage done than my resto shaman who's been defending a node or supporting a push the entire game.

(no offense meant to anyone here who might play NE hunters :P)

I really enjoyed AB/EotS. Of course, I played horde and that mostly pleasant experience wasn't at all matched on the few alliance characters i got into the BG-playing range.

In BG9 out of about 30 ABs I did recently for marks, I think I managed to win a total of 3. For some reason the horde really suck at joining AB. Most of the time its 8 horde vs 15 alliance for the first 5 minutes or so, then when alliance have 4 cap points, the rest of the horde slowly trickle in, and then we lose.
