Hella -- Well, not really hate. I just don't understand what it's supposed to be a contraction of.

i.e. "That's hella cool, man" Hell of cool? Huh?

Anything that is a substitution of a full word with a few exceptions: brb, afaik, ymmv, etc.

I refuse to take anyone seriously who types u instead of you.  :uhrr:

I have one I use all the time that I just hate, but can't seem to completely banish from my vocabulary: Starting sentances with "It's like,"

My manager also bugs me about using phrases such as "Honestly," or "To be honest,"

I am however proud of the fact that I help to keep the expression "hey dude" alive.

Oh, I've got the "It's like", "I'm like" thing going on too. I'm a male bow head.

Just used it actually! "I'm like, Courtney, wtf are you sending me pics of chicks' asses at 3:00 AM for?"

Instead of "honestly", it's always "seriously.." for me.

Leverage, used as a verb in business speak, "to leverage", as in "we will leverage our existing investment to ramp up production".

There is no such verb. The verb is "to lever". Leverage is a noun, meaning the effect you get from using a lever. When you are using a lever, you are levering, not "leveraging".

Matter of fact, whenever I hear a phrase like "we will leverage our existing investment to ramp up production" (typically with liberal use of "going forward"), I know I'm listening to someone out of their depth.

Guy who sits behind me at work speaks German as his first language, but you normally would never notice, his English is that well spoken. Except for certain expressions. My favorite is "I rest assure you". I don't have the heart to correct him.

I believe Germans, out of any foreigners, pick up English better than anyone. Some even have what could almost be a middle American surburban accent. Not sure why that is though.

If magic were real, I would create the following spell:

Title: "No Monty Python - Holy Grail Quotes (aura)"
Description:  All those within the aura will emit nothing but silence when attempting to utter a Holy Grail reference.
Level:  5
Type:  Buff
Range: 20'
Casting time:  Instant
Duration: 30 minutes
Recast Time - 30 sec.
Mana Cost:  10

Now, of course, this was my original plan.  My friend Ty, however came up with a better idea.  Instead of silencing all Holy Grail quotes within 20', it would change the quote to a 'Life of Brian' one.

Observe:

****

Traffic Cop: "License and registration, please, sir."

Monty Python Fan: (to himself) I know! This would be the perfect time for me to use "Come and see the violence inherent in the system. Help! Help! I'm being repressed!"

Monty Python Fan: (clears throat as he hands over his license) "All right, but apart from the sanitation, medicine, education, wine, public order, irrigation, roads, the fresh water system and public health, what have the Romans ever done for us?"

Traffic Cop: "Sir?"

Monty Python Fan: (stunned) "I...I don't know..."

Because the languages are the most closely related? 'Mine name ist Lamaros.' Not much translation required there...

And some context for my earlier contribution:

Kevin Rudd described his election victory as their "desired election outcome". No fucking shit. Redundant stupid fucking language.

I understand why they can pick up the language itself, but the accent is another thing. Many German people I know (as well those observed on TV) almost sound American. Not British, but American. So I'm wondering why that is.

I say "honest" so that people know the difference from when I'm lying.  How can people not like the word "honest"?  I also am not crazy about the word "buzzword" and almost included it but thought people would think I was just being silly.  I think I don't like buzzwords in general, especially the ones that have to do with self-help.  Especially Oprah words.  Self-esteem, therapeutic, enabler, etc.  They make whatever point you're trying to make sound insincere.

Self-appraisal (I know what I think. What do YOU think)
Yes, and (no, it's yes but because the idea was that bad)
Brainstorm (they never are, right next to "open and honest" and "frank")
Take this offline (no, make the effing decision now you avoider)
Avoider (is that even a real word?)
Dodged a bullet (only because nobody does proper post-mortems)
Impossible (go get an easy job you wank)
Challenging (what the hell do you think they pay us for, wank)
Easy (because you don't know shit... wank)

And anyone who tries to do everything themselves because they think that's the only way to get ahead. Just gotta recognize when that's the case versus when someone truly does need to do everything themself.

We thankfully purged god out of Christmas a long time ago.  Christmas in America is a totally secular fun holiday with its own traditions and beliefs that have nothing to do with the Bible, for the majority of Americans.  So I have no problem with it, or see why others get bent out of shape over it.  :-)
Quote

I think this is a valid saying.  Its the middle ground between "Thats an excellent plan, do it." and "Theres no fucking way that will ever work even if excuted to perfection."  It might work, but its going to be tricky and take more effort.

Hate to derail but...

IM'ing, RSS, Conferencing, Community Portals, and Email? That doesn't really sound like "Web 2.0" to me. That shit is ghetto. I thought Web 2.0 had to do with more accessibility for users to create and customize content. Socializing is the reason the net exists in the first place. And RSS is just another extension of information gathering/research -- "Web 1.0".

Wiki's are Web 2.0 however -- and it's not really all that exciting. Not enough to create a buzzword for at least.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

You are right.  Any chart that puts email into Web 2.0, or even Web 1.0 for that matter, was made by a moron.  If something existed before The Web, which isn't even a real thing, then it does not belong on that chart.

A previous post reminded me that I hate the word "buff".

The phrase, "I could care less" in any situation other than one in which you in fact care about said issue but could imagine yourself possessing a lower level of caring. In other words when you don't mean, "I couldn't care less."

Nuanced.
Neo- anyone's name as an adjective (I've been reading too many crappy journal articles that overuse this. Mostly social scientists.)
pointlessly shortened words e.g. fac instead of faculty. You just saved yourself two syllables there and butchered a perfectly good word in the process.

People who write an entire post in lower case including the personal pronoun.
People who end each sentence with 'lol' - Why are you cackling like a moron at your own 'wit'?

Sort of tangential to the topic…

And when I come back from my week off and see Arrington taking a poll about whether or not TechCrunch should accept Izea's (formerly PayPerPost) advertising offer, I am validated. Mike has a long history with PayPerPost, and I really can't figure out why. If you hate the company so much, fuck, stop covering them. 10,000 sperm, and you were the fastest?

Credibility? Bloggers have no credibility - we are just a bunch of assholes who write this stuff from our living rooms. Once we leave the internet, we come to the stark realization that nobody cares.

I hate when people use the word "literally" when they don't mean literally.

Unfortunately the word is now so misused that:

http://www.m-w.com/dictionary/literally

Literally has come to mean virtually which literally is not what it means....

Fuck I just confused myself and that is why I hate people. No, not just the people who use the word "literally", I fucking just hate everyone.

- typos in published materials - spellchecker yo, DKP 50 minus!
- using the company name a bazillion times in sales pitches and proposals.  We're interested in your business but we're going to talk about us instead.  Oh and we're going to say our company name every chance we get just in case you forget.
- and just browsing the office intranet, the following - "above the radar", "in terms of", "credentialing" (the fuck, not everything is a verb), "by the numbers"

Verbal tics could be a whole 'nother thread. My supervisor is a pretty bad public speaker, long winded and filled with verbal tics from uh to you know. I just make funny growling noises and paw at the air. Speaking of MU Zappa, when did all teen and twenties girls start talking like valley girls and ending all sentences in a question? FFS.

Liar. When I fist met you in 'cyberspace' (there's another one) Bowman was using it all the time in the chat room - "we'll have dragons in the next publish". I'm not surprised that you excised it from memory. NCsoft used to use it all the time in Lineage too, but since 90% of them were grubby foreigners, it was marginally more excusable.

This falls into the 'tight' vs. 'tight' category.

I can see how it would annoy you in most cases, but in the case of a large rollout in an MMOG, it seems perfectly acceptable to me. Though, I don't know why people use 'publish' instead of 'patch.'

They don't have one bad product.

Only if you don't take price into account. Otherwise, all of their computers are pretty bad. The Mac Pro quad core starts at $2499 and has shit for graphics in the box. You can buy stuff off the shelf for $1200 and build a BEAST of a machine that outperforms it in every way.

I'm not saying their products are bad in a vacuum. I'm just saying that Apple still hasn't shed that "for artsy jerks" look it's had for years.

I agree on the default graphics card (NVIDIA 7300) but otherwise you are comparing apples and oranges. The lowest-end CPUs in the Mac Pro cost $750 *each* on Newegg because they are Xeon server CPUs, and there's a pair of them so already you are over $1200.

And you're also approaching it from a gamer/webby aspect, not from a desktop publisher/video editor/music studio standpoint. Also, the xserve is a really nice server and you can get cheap OS upgrades for years (one price, years of upgrades for 'free'...but I think we just ran out :( ). We upgraded to an xserve because it was only a couple hundred bucks more than buying a new machine and the OS.

Anyway. Not the thread for this. Mac bashing, or really bashing any tech that works well is fucking moronic. Had a long meeting with mac haters who love linux. Whatever.

Mac Pro is due for an upgrade, it's long in the tooth now… …but generally speaking, Mac on par with Win machines (not build it yourself of course, but that there still doesn't factor in "time and inclination" factor, along with other incompatibilities that surface in such endeavors)… …and core Mac audience is no longer limited to "for artsy jerks" — any developer conference I attend is Mac dominant, and most of the Windows laptops are running Ubuntu… …also, hang out in an Apple Store, and the fully staffed outlet can barely keep stride with all the MacBooks and MacBookPros being purchased…

I want windows to launch their own anti-mac commercial, and on fucking superbowl sunday.  Somthing along the lines of "Hi, I'm a Mac, and even though I only make up around 4% of all computers owned, I'm culturally relevant goddamnit! PAY ATTENTION TO ME!  LOOK, LOOK, I CAME OUT WITH AN ISOMETHING, WE HAVE FANCY FUCKING COMMERCIALS WITH HIP PEOPLE DANCING IN SILHOETTE! WE ARE RELEVANT GOD DAMNIT!"

Also, ebonics.  Speak english goddamnit, if you say that you want to "axe me a question" one more time, I'm going to take it as an immenent threat and make you about 300 grains heavier.

Hot Mess. Has anyone else actually heard of this one? A chick I work with uses it. Far. Too. Often.

It makes me want to stab her.

No, not in the face, and no, not with a rigid cock. ok, maybe just a little bit

It's really annoying.

Also, the word street, as in, "That's so street, dude." Fuck, I hate ricers.

It's probably already been mentioned, but irregardless, when they mean that one thing is not relevant or effected by another...FFS, we already have a word for that, and it's called regardless.

If something is regardless, it is not regarding something....but if it's irregardless, then it's actually regarding? God, die in a double-negative fire. :mob:
