Title: Uncharted
Post by: schild on November 17, 2007, 01:20:11 PM
Good god. This game is crafted by the hands of masters. If you have a PS3 and don't have Uncharted yet, you're a damn fool.

I have a PS3, but yet I don't. I'm only a fool for lending it out. ;)

And yes, Naughty Dog are masters at their craft.... Just didn't realize they'd be much more so than Insomniac.

Just finished it. Possibly one of the single best games I've ever played. I have no clue how long it took. Probably around 15-16 hours. The set pieces are so well-crafted, you start to wonder what dev team could possibly match it.

We played the demo, now the real adventure begins! Please let it be just like Lost in Blue, but with guns.

Just finished it last night and it's definitely my pick for GOTY.  Easily one of my all time favorites too.

God damnit I hope we see more Uncharted titles.  I fucking LOVED the main characters.

I died a lot.  And aiming was  a pain in the ass.  Now that might just be because I'm bad at gaming, or that I didn't give it enough time.  I was also playing it with Schild breathing down my neck, telling me how great it was.

I love watching Righ play just about anything for consoles on the big screen tv.  Driving games like GT are my favourite, though.  Especially stoned.

Title: Re: Uncharted
Post by: Yegolev on November 27, 2007, 12:15:03 PM
Hmmm, my wife doesn't like driving games.  Something about the engine noise, especially small turbocharged engines.  And the lack of Leon Kennedy, I think.  I might mention that I haven't played Ellen in Folklore, only Keats.  I suspect it wasn't thoroughly playtested this way.

Amen. I only play the platformy parts then pass it off to Sauced for the shooting. It's easier for me to fight in melee range and just punch dudes than to try to aim, and I get pwnd. If it had auto-target I would not be able to put it down.

Title: Re: Uncharted
Post by: schild on November 27, 2007, 03:25:14 PM
Funny. Because there is auto-targeting. Fire from the hip. When you're within a certain amount of range, it auto-targets. If you time things right, you can rape face like it's no ones business without aiming at all.

I like the aiming here... Maybe not perfect, but it requires a little more hestitation and concentration than usual. That's good.

Title: Re: Uncharted
Post by: Fabricated on December 02, 2007, 07:43:31 PM
I'm at Chapter 16 now. This game is a bitch sometimes...there's been a few fights I've racked up 15+ deaths on.

Admittedly the one in the chapter "Trapped" I insisted on cheesing. I pretty much broke the game on that and ended it with 4 kills.

Title: Re: Uncharted
Post by: stray on December 03, 2007, 06:00:49 PM
ANYWAYS....

This game is neither good or great, it's fucking glorious.

[edit] Seriously, this is like the best parts of Gears of War, FarCry, Prince of Persia, Tomb Raider, Flashback Ico, with a little adventure quality storytelling tossed in. I wouldn't make the common comparison to Indiana Jones though... More like Romancing the Stone. Haha. But in a good way.

Title: Re: Uncharted
Post by: Fabricated on December 03, 2007, 08:08:27 PM
I'm going to be sad when it's over despite the fact I'm stuck in a very confusing area right now. I hope it sells well enough to garner a sequel with the same VAs. Nathan is kinda like a super happy-go-lucky version of Indiana Jones but he's a pretty awesome character.

The little touches are almost Kojima-esque in how Nathan mutters to himself and the enemy reactions to near misses/wounds. I think about the time I started thinking this was GOTY material was when I got done with a particularly obnoxious fight/prince of persia sequence to run smack into a absolutely huge prince of persia sequence. I actually blurted out loud, "You've got to be shitting me," and the instant I said that, Nathan exclaimed almost the exactly the same thing. This has happened like a half dozen times, including surprise waves of enemies Nick responds to with, "Where the hell is he getting all of these guys?", and when he says "Oh Nononono!" on close call grenades and collapsing ledges.

edited: Since I can't pay attention enough to actually get the main character's name right.

Heh, made it chapter 14 in one night. Not good!

[edit] Wait a sec... The character's name is Nick? I didn't even catch that.

Interesting..

Chapter 18: "Whoa shit"

And yea, it's one of the best games I've ever played. Ever.

Seriously. I'm gonna have to adjust my list. Everything this game has tried to be, it's done excellently.

Title: Re: Uncharted
Post by: Yegolev on December 04, 2007, 09:07:13 AM
I sort of wish I had waited to play this now that my PS3 has decided it's going to be a bitch. Oh, the huge manatee!  I will explain the PS3 woes later.

As Stray mentioned, it's like this game is composed entirely of the good parts of FarCry, God of War, what Kojima's games are like inside his own mind, Prince of Persia, Ico, and Butcher Bay.  Probably the best game I have played in 2006 and 2007 combined.

I wouldn't be me if I couldn't complain about the problems, though.  White specks around Nate's head look like TREASURE.  I absolutely hate the grenade aiming, it's total balls.  But that's all I can complain about!

Title: Re: Uncharted
Post by: stray on December 06, 2007, 02:03:43 AM
I'd like to also add that this has more in common with National Treasure than Indiana Jones, especially with Nathan's "wtf?" comments when stumbling upon yet another puzzle room. I mean, didn't Indy find his treasures fairly early on -- only to have them lost in the hands of Nazi's soon after?

Also, like I said, Romancing the Stone. He's got Douglas' "everyman" snarkiness.

I'm embarassed for even knowing that movie though.... But it wouldn't hurt if the sequel had a slimy De Vito character in it.

OK, it's 4:20 AM. Thanks for listening. We've now hit page 2 at least.

Title: Re: Uncharted
Post by: schild on December 06, 2007, 07:05:09 AM
I thought it had more in common with The Mummy than National Treasure or Indiana Jones.

Really though, it has a lot in common with all 3 movies, so it's mostly splitting hairs.

He didn't find the Grail until near the end, and he needed his dad's little booklet with the clues to solve various puzzles to get to it.

Or just looters. I just saw a special on them earlier, and you're right for the most part though. Kind of suprising that some situations can get close to the things we see in these fictional stories (multiple groups vying for the same discoveries..some armed and hostile).

My comparison to National Treasure is mainly how Nathan keeps thinking the next room he unveils will be the treasure room, only to be met with more puzzles. In National Treasure, Jon Voight (Cage's dad) quit because of that shit.

Beat it last night thanks to finally having a few hours to myself.  Man, those last few chapters were insane.  The game is definitely one of the best games I've played, ever.  It captures everything it went for so well.  It goes for, and achieves, the movie feel perfectly.  I just hope it's doing well sales wise so we can have a sequel, pronto.

Title: Re: Uncharted
Post by: Velorath on December 13, 2007, 04:16:41 PM
PS3 owners need to start supporting this game.  Partway through this month's NPD thread over at GAF, they say that Uncharted only sold 117k copies.  Who the hell are the 5-6 million PS3 owners in NA and Europe who didn't pick this up?

Title: Re: Uncharted
Post by: Prospero on December 13, 2007, 04:29:07 PM
Their marketing is weak. I just went to the game site. It doesn't have a single thing on the gameplay. They don't even have a real gameplay video. They have a video from some art guy talking about ranges in shaders with apertures. Whatever. I'm still not sure what the hell you do in the game, just that it has something to do with a wanna-be Brendan Frasier trying to find Drake's treasure. And guns.

They need to get the PR machine pumping.

Why don't you just download the demo? It convinced me to immediately leave my house and buy it.

[EDIT] At times you're going to be reminded of, say, ICO. Other times it'll remind you of Gears of War (AND even RE4 in some stages). Except it takes place in jungles.

If that isn't enough to appeal to you, then I don't know what to say.

I'm kinda disappointed that Uncharted isn't doing better on the charts myself, but apparently a sequel's pretty much guaranteed.

http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3164790

Their next game could be a Jak and Daxter game, or a sequel.  I know I'm much more interested in more Uncharted, but they supposedly claim in the interview that it's just a question of when, not if.

No, he's just obnoxious. Honestly, if I had a PS 3, I'd probably pick this one up. Still, their marketing has been weak at best. That video is the most prominently displayed video on their site, and there are NO videos in their media section. Demos are all well and good, but I suspect most people won't download a demo of a game they haven't heard of.

Title: Re: Uncharted
Post by: schild on December 14, 2007, 12:08:39 PM
Who gives a shit. God of War had zero marketing. Buzz made it blow up. Problem is, there aren't enough people playing this to create the buzz it deserves. Only P3 and Portal even stand up to it this year.

I died a lot.  And aiming was  a pain in the ass.  Now that might just be because I'm bad at gaming, or that I didn't give it enough time.  I was also playing it with Schild breathing down my neck, telling me how great it was.

Then he tweaked your nipple slowly, gently, between his thumb and forefinger and, with a soft exhalation of breath, slipped himself inside you.

Yeah. That will mess your aim up and leave you with a pain in the ass allright.

Relying on buzz is like playing the lottery. God of War released in March when there aren't a hundred other titles fighting for attention. I think it is foolish to expect buzz to save you during the holiday rush.

It's a little different than FPS aiming, but pretty easy once you the get hang of it. Think RE4. Don't just be relying on some run and gun shit though. Not sure why schild suggests shooting from the hip. Sure way to get your ass killed. At least with most levels.

Glad I bought it  and listened.

GotY material, no question. Seriously  - and I'd thought Portal had that sewn up for me. But no. And I'm a 360 fanboi, but this thing rocks ass.

Yeah got a 60GB when i could. Haven't had a chance to play it much, although my G/F liked Pirates in BRHD!!!! --- sigh. But I did get Uncharted and it's fucking awesome - really I LOVED Gears of War for the adventure feel and UC killed it there plus the plush environments.

Uncharted = GotY for me - save Portal, which I have to support for the fact its writing is brilliant.
