They will be spending all week just fixing the bugs released with 2.3, add in a holiday and the knowledge that s3 will have at least 3-4 days of hell for them makes good sense to delay another week. Then they would have spent 2-3 weeks bug fixing 2.3, and then Christmas and New Year would have interfered with getting S3 out.
