Title: Interplay back in the MMO business confirmed?
Post by: DarkSign on November 14, 2007, 07:34:14 AM
Herve Caen sure has some nerve. Gamasutra is reporting that the company we thought "survival of the fittest" had destroyed reopens in-house development, hiring Jason Anderson of Troika fame. (Not to forget, of course, that he worked on the first Fallout game, too.) Here's a funny snippet:

Quote
Publisher Interplay has announced its third quarter earnings, showing sales falling 86 percent year over year to just $47,000, a period CEO Herve Caen calls "an important milestone" in its "difficult turnaround," as it reopens in-house development and prepares to launch development of its Fallout MMO.

The company's quarterly sales are down sharply from the second quarter, where its sale of the Fallout brand to MMO developer Bethesda saw it take in $5.9 million, a yearly rise of 872 percent.

It had been my understanding that the MMO rights to Fallout reverted to Bethesda if Interplay hadn't raised 25$ in the first year of financing. Perhaps they have?

Apparently Titus is being sold. It would be fitting that Titus being the company they siphoned off IPLY's revenue to support would go bankrupt, get sold, and then that money would be reinjected back into Interplay.

They are still in a very tenuous position. I'm not sure the legal justification here but IPLY has written off a lot of debt based on the fact the debtors haven't attempted to collect in the last 2-3 years. That doesn't really seem valid to me.

Either way I'm hoping they pull it off.

In full disclosure I do own 5000 shares of IPLY that I have completely and totally mistimed selling off over the years. I bought in a long, long time ago at .09 and have seen the stock go from there up to .52/share (after a few days of me buying) and then back down to .01/share, back up again to .28/share and now back to .08/share. It's  been a "fun" ride.

Maybe they can merge with Brøderbund, Looking Glass, and Accolade.

Wow, yea, so would I. You could build this pretty easily too. In fact, I may try now that Source supports TF2. Instead of the AI chasing you, it'd be other players. Sort of a King of the Hill type thing where it's maybe 15 on 1 or some such. Only weapons would be melee for the assaulters and the fast-acting shovel for the player, maybe spiff it up with some elements like turrets and whatnot. My memory of Lode Runner is hazy at best.

May work as last man standing too. Heck, if it works at all I'll be greating surprised. Volumes exist on what I don't know about Source.

Less than a month ago, Hervé Caen surprised us all by announcing that Interplay was restarting in-house development and had hired none other than Fallout and Troika legend Jason D. Anderson to head their first project. At the time of this interview, Interplay's MMO is officially unnanounced - though everyone assumes it is a Fallout MMO - and thus could not be discussed directly. Still, we were able to pin Jason down for some questions about his return to the video game industry, his MMO philosophy, and what we might expect from the game. Here we go:

Rest of the interview can be found here:
