Title: Prescription Glasses for $27 (for real, and this aint an ad)
Post by: CharlieMopps on October 28, 2007, 12:00:27 PM
So, I scratched up my glasses... like I always do... so I call my eye doctor and he says they were over a year old so he wouldn't fix them, and my insurance only paid for new ones every 2 years... so please come in and give him $300 cash. I politely told him to go to hell and thought "You can buy anything on the net... why not glasses?" So to google I went ... 10 minuites later my mouth was hanging open. $27 for prescription glasses? No friggen way... But yes, it is true.

You need your prescription (You don't have to mail it to them, just the numbers off of it.) Just call your eye doctor and get it from him. You also need your "Pupil distance" which you can ask your doctor to measure, or you can measure yourself with someone else's help.

There are about a dozen sites that sell to-order prescription glasses. I went to: www.goggles4u.com because they were the cheapest I could find ($27) That is the no-frills, glasses. I think if you got "The works" there it would be around $80... that would include the fancy high-index plastic and Bifocals... that sort of thing. But my Prescription is light so I skipped all that. If you want to check out some other sites, just google for them. There are even review sites and such so you can compare them. Some other sites are more expensive but have more options. I, for example, couldn't get clip on sunglasses from the site I was at.

Downside: You pick out the frame online, so you're unsure how they'll fit when you get them. I seriously doubt there is any sort of return policy. Some of the sites I went to wanted me to pay in Hong Kong dollars... and I was like... no way... lol
Oh well... they're $27!

Here are some random sites (other than the one I used) that also sell cheap glasses:
http://www.eyeglassdirect.com
http://www.39dollarglasses.com
http://www.glassescrafter.com
etc... there are many more.

Have you actually gotten them yet and like them?  =P

Yea, should have mentioned that. I got mine, and they are great. I should mention again though, I just got the frames and lens's... no frills. So I can't vouch for the quality of any of the more advanced services (Bifocals, tinting, transition lens's, etc...) But what I did get are quality lenses.

Also... if you search the net for coupons, you can find them. I did a search for goggles4u and coupons... I found about half a dozen different offers and saved another $2

I like a lot of these frames. Thanks for the link. I happen to need new glasses also.

My problem is that my face isn't very wide, so I can't wear very many kinds of glasses that will actually fit.  I would so do this, though, if my face was standard sized, or if there was a brand name on the glasses so I could shop at a bricks and mortar store to get the name of the frame and then order online.

Awesome find, I'm interested in hearing about other people's experiences with this.

If you don't need to go super-cheapo, you can take your prescrip to walmart and get their cheapo frames/lenses. We have a great eye doctor, we just don't buy glasses through him.

BUMP.

Anyone else decide to order glasses? I'm getting my eyes checked out this week and want to know if anyone has tried within the last 6 months.

I did.  They were awful.  The curvature was wrong.  The edges of the lens looked raggedy.  The frames felt cheapo.  I'll never wear them.  Ever.  Luckily, I didn't actually need them.  I have plenty of others but I just wanted to see what they'd be like.  I used www.goggles4u.com .

Ok. So they were crap. C'est la vie.

I have an "oval" face, which, I guess is suppose to mean almost anything looks OK on me (?) - but I'm super picky as it is when it comes to frames. Definitely not a thing I'd ever order off the net.

I'm picky, too. And cheap. And now I'm broke.

So I just squint.

Just dropped $500 bucks on new glasses. Insurance covers $200. Sigh.

My last pair lasted 5 years though, so spending money on them can pay off.

Yeah, I've been on the Zenni Optical bandwagon for a long time now.  Actually just got a new pair of transitions lenses from them for like $50.  Suck on it, Lenscrafters!

Interested in hearing anyone's good results stories.  Lost a pair of glasses that cost me $600 awhile ago, haven't decided what to replace them with.  They did last about 2 years but still a  :ye_gods: moment.

I just dropped too much money on D&G 5035s.

But I plan on picking up some shit from Zenni Optical also.

/resurrection

I'm going to be buying glasses online today from https://www.coastalcontacts.com (https://www.coastalcontacts.com).  There is a sale going on through Monday for their frames which I like better (except for the semi-rimless selection) than the other sites I have seen.  They also have a 30 day "return for any reason" guarantee so I will likely order two glasses to see which one fits my face and if I like both I'll keep both since it will still be less than 1/3 of what LensCrafters wanted for one pair.  I'll post a follow-up on how it goes.

On a side note, the fine eyesight specialist at Costco informed me my nearsightedness (SPH) improved from -1.25 to -1.00 but my astigmatism (CYL) got worse in one eye from -0.50 to -0.75 while the other eye stayed the same at -0.50.  The axis changed a few degrees too.  Has anyone had their vision improve while their astigmatism got worse?  I'm not sure if I should ignore this prescription in favor of my one from last year since I could buy socks, a blender and pizza within 10 feet of the Costco optometrist.

I have ordered contacts and glasses from Coastal for the past four years.  Great service, prices and super fast delivery.

That's who I've been buying through for years, and they're great.  Never any problems.

None of these places will make lenses with a cylinder high enough for my left eye.

You just responded to a post from a year and a few months ago. Also, my post was in response to one of yours about Zenni Optical. There's some time-warp shit going on in this thread.

Bought 2 pair from 39dollarglasses, total was 240$ (including next day air). A single pair from lenscrafters was like 250-300$. Both fit and have no obvious defects. Two thumbs up!

39*2=240?

He upgraded to the "Make frames out of high impact cocaine" option.

But hiding in a thread is much more comfortable than starting a new thread.  Like an old pair of shoes.  Or a Snuggie.

Hopefully my glasses arrive next week.  The sale applies to frame plus lens which was a nice surprise at checkout.

Any lens options beyond the most basic package get expensive fast. But its still comparatively a good deal. Also included free shipping with an interweb coupon.

Yeah, if you need anything specialized you can forget it, but for relatively normal (bad) vision it's great.

I need to get a pair of bifocals made to replace the jewelers optivisors I wear when I'm working.  I'd like something that gives me around 2.5x magnification while I'm looking down but my normal corrective vision when I'm looking straight ahead.  No way Zenni can do this, so I'm just going to go with the absolute cheapest frame/lens set I can from my local optometrist.

What on earth cost $600?

*I know it's an old post, but Hoax is still here.. So he can answer it.

I recently paid around 400, and that was a rarity/splurge moment for me. Umm, there was some discount I think though. I don't remember the original price of the frames, but they were a gay designer brand so the price was probably high (my case has a medusa head on it if you know what brand that is )

My glasses from Coastal came today!  They definitely don't look or feel like discount glasses.  I still can't believe how nice they are.  Definite  from me.
