![]() ”Now these points of data make a beautiful line. And we're out of beta. We're releasing on time.” I'm having a hard time writing about the Orange Box. That's to say, the words I'm forming don't really do it justice. Greatest Box of Games Ever Released almost does it, but that's not really enough. It's kind of like seeing god. The Orange Box is a religious experience. Hidden inside it's sweet, delicious encryption was the complete Half-Life 2 Experience (up to this point) and a 2-hour gem of a title. A title that fleshes out a world that we'd only seen glimpses of through semi-awkward story-telling and short scripted events that didn't always make sense. And then you play it. Everything, or at least enough of everything, falls into place. Protip: Absolutely massive, game ruining spoilers after the jump. I buy the whole bit that you were there at bring your daughter to work day, but there is absolutely nothing to back up the claim you're Johnson's daughter.
Beyond that bit of crazy, you're pretty much dead on. Although I actually do care about the HL crew. In fact I want more fights with vorts wearing lab coats. Maybe even vort Village People. Title: Re: Anyway this cake is great. It's so delicious and moist. Post by: squirrel on October 16, 2007, 08:58:28 PM Quote Now give us more Aperture Lab stuff before I kick you right in the jimmy. My God yes please. I've played Portal through twice, and I'm probably less than 1/2 way through EP2. It just pales in comparison IMO, although I want to finish it to see how it helps me understand what happened at Aperture. I've completely made the 'clone theory' leap. The scribblings and the almost familial tone of GLaDOS lead me to no other conclusion. Furthermore I don't believe that there have ever been any other test subjects. The test environment, and GLaDOS her/itself, were designed specifically for Chell. She is not one in a long line of subjects, or even the latest clone of the most recent subject; she *is* the subject and the only thing that is being tested, as you mention in quoting the "NOTES.EXE": Quote “Several Years Later – The untested AI is activated for the first time as one of the planned activities on Aperture's first annual bring-your-daughter-to-work day.” So why? Why did he do this, and where does this go from here? What was the overall purpose - to find out if a single person redeveloped from Tabula Rasa state could be molded and guided to a specific goal, albeit with behavioral and physical modifications? Or is there something specific about Chell, some reason it had to be her. Were they testing the modifications and the process or the character? And what if the original Chell left on the same day she arrived, and you are not only a clone, but a clone being put through trials the original never experienced? What if there are not only more Chell's but more experiments? What if the original is completely oblivious to her genetic contribution to science - as an army of Chell's are repeatedly massacred until they succeed? Game of the Year for me easily so far, and unlikely to be de-throned. Hellgate will probably occupy lots more of time in terms of keyboard hours, but only because there is no more Portal for me to play. And GoTY should not only be about execution, but about innovation, intelligence, engagement and execution. So far for me Portal fucking nails it. As I read somewhere else I can't now recall "Valve has shown that the first-person, action, puzzle, adventure, comedy genre is a winner. Which is a, um, first." So yeah. More. Please. EDIT: spelling and clarification. Title: Re: Anyway this cake is great. It's so delicious and moist. I have a sneaking suspicion that Chell and Alyx are connected via the GMan and that GMan has a stake in Aperture. Or at least, it's lining up after Episode 2. Omg spoiler. Post by: Litigator on October 17, 2007, 10:02:57 AM Zelda had some great dungeons, and Portal was very much a Zelda dungeon, because the central device of a Zelda dungeon is to give you a new item and then build the dungeon's puzzles around the use of that item. I mean, where else have you seen a block used to weigh down a switch?
I do think this sort of undermine's Nintendo's claim that increased processing power doesn't open game design doors. Physics models in game worlds have been germinating for a few years. Half Life 2 really showed it off with the gravity gun. But Portal is one of the first to really explore some of the more interesting possibilities of what these models can do. I really, really liked the "Speedy thing goes in, speedy thing comes out" puzzles, particularly the one in (I think) room 18, where you use your fall momentum to springboard up the platforms by leapfrogging the holes. Anyway, you're reading way too much into Portal. I suspect the big future application of this is that Gordon uses a portal gun in one level of Half Life 2: Episode 3 Title: Re: Anyway this cake is great. It's so delicious and moist. It's so delicious and moist. Post by: pxib on October 18, 2007, 12:53:32 AM One of my favorite games evar is Eric Chahi's "Out of the World".
The controls are very simple, and the player has a small set of simple tools (all of them activated by either tapping or holding down a single button) which can be used in a variety of ways. The game is about learning the use of those tools by dying a lot. It only takes four or five hours to get through it the first time and it can be replayed in two or so. This simple gameplay rests comfortably on some delightful world design, several fun cinematic tropes, and whimsical sets and animation. The experience is a delight from start (to this awful portion in a cave, and then from that awful portion in the cave) to finish. Ico does the same thing, now Portal has as well. They're short, gameplay is simple and nothing ever slows the player down for long. You solve some satisfying puzzles without stressing too long or going to find a walkthrough, everything builds to a narrative climax, and then you win and there's a pleasant denouncement. It's like going to the movies, except you're the star. In Half Life 2 I got bogged down fighting the airship outside of Black Mesa's new HQ, but redeemed itself by giving me the super gravity gun at the end for some pointlessly godlike ass kicking. Episode One lost my interest as soon as they took the super gravity gun away and put me in that garage dropping cars on insects. I realized I was just trudging through Half Life 2 backwards at double speed, not an exciting proposition. The narrative stalled and no new plot threads were revealed and I got to the end because I felt obligated to, not because I really wanted to. Episode Two kept me struggling through tedious portions like the insect cave because I felt like something was actually happening in the story, but as soon as I realized that I was going to have to fight an perceptually endless stream of striders and hunters, I put the game down. I'm not -that- interested. I'll finish it when Episode Three comes out... or when Episode Three is selling for $15.00 and comes with some other cute, well-constructed game that's less challenging than it is fun. Heck, I'd have to spend that much just to go see a movie. Title: Re: Anyway this cake is great. It's so delicious and moist. Title: Re: Anyway this cake is great. It's so delicious and moist. Post by: DraconianOne on October 22, 2007, 01:16:59 PM Spoilers forthcoming - get over it!
I get the impression that Cave Johnson died in 1979 from reading ApertureScience.com so I think the link to Chell being his daughter (even cloned) is spurious at best. The AI mentioned could be Chell though although it doesn't read like that and doesn't even read that ambiguously. re: timeline. Several years after 1996, the AI is activated on Bring Your Daughter To Work Day. Black Mesa is still considered a competitor so it can't be post HL1 which is around 2001 or later (from the manual - Gordon Freeman still in MIT in 2000/2001.) Time Portal is set is either then or possibly sometime after the Combine invasion - GLaDos says "Things have changed since you last left the building. Whats going on out there is going to make you wish you were back in here. I have an infinite capacity for knowledge, and even I'm not sure what's going on outside." As for Chell: human or non-human? Either clone or android. So far, no evidence of clones in the HL world but that doesn't mean it's not possible. GLaDos does refer to her as an android at one point, either by mistake or design. Also, the achievement you get for euthanising the WCC is called Fratricide - an odd choice of words: the WCC is a "brother" of Chell? Chell breaks GLaDos' heart? How come? Like a daughter might break a mother's heart? Or, alternatively, it's more straightforward than that: Chell is a former employee of Aperture Science ("things have changed since you last left the building") and there have been other test subjects before her who are initially locked in the relaxation vault and then submitted to the test as well. Hence the hidden email on ApertureScience.com asking why no-one's been allowed to go home and how come they've built the Enrichment Centre. I also concur about "Out Of This World" except here we called it "Another World". Fantastic game, fantastic story. Title: Re: Anyway this cake is great. It's so delicious and moist. Well, could be that Alyx is a clone or Chell is a clone, but I just don't get that feeling. My guts tell me the relaxation centers are where employees were put after GLaDOS took over. I'm also just going on a gut feeling with the Alyx-Chell connection since they do look alike and the G-Man is linked to Aperture and Alyx. I might have heard it wrong but I think Alyx is not Benson's daughter...? Need to replay HL2E2, and I will because that lawn gnome is going into fucking space.
I think at this point they could go anywhere with the story. I'd rather not see Gordon get the portal gun simply because I'd like to see Chell star in a game... too bad both are mutes. Also Gordon doesn't have the leg braces. EDIT: I'm also considering the notion that Alyx is a descendant of Chell, depending on timeline. Title: Re: Anyway this cake is great. I got Orange Box too, just a few weeks ago. Knowing nothing about HL2, and hating it for about half the game. Yeah, I freakin' hated it. I kept playing though, because everybody told me I had to. And I hated it all the way through. The difficulty level was just all over the place, I couldn't find the fun, and I thought it was sloppy, lazy game design. Clearly millions of gamers across the world were insane for liking it. Then I got an army of antlions that responds to my squeezy-toy, and holy crap I loved it. I think the whole theme can be summed up with the go-cart in the tunnel. You ride through the sludge, the radioactive goop, and there's corpses everywhere, and one false step could mean your death. Then you emerge from that tunnel, into the light, and...it's quiet, and open, and there's no sludge, no death, and no oppression for miles and miles and miles. Woah. Episode 1 was a failure? Too bad. It was interesting to see the world backwards, starting in the citadel and ending in the city. I want a head crab hat. They're sold out though. >_< Want Ep 3 now plz. I haven't played Portal; I thought it was just this thing, and didn't know it was set in the HL2 universe. I might have to check it out after all. You're missing out on one of the most intelligently crafted games in recent memory. Title: Re: Anyway this cake is great. It's so delicious and moist. Quote I got Orange Box too, just a few weeks ago. Having finished all 3 of the HL2 games, I can safely say that the minute to minute shooting gameplay isn't really spectacular. Most of the normal weapons aren't great, you are always struggling to find ammo for the best guns, and other shooter franchises do the shooty bits much smoother/better. HL2 is one of those games where the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. The buggy rides are annoying (though much better in EP2 than in the original), and especially in the first HL2, there are way too many connected hallways with little to nothing in them. But combined with the story, the scripted events and things like the gravity gun and physics puzzles add up to one of the best shooter movie type games on the market. Quote Episode 1 was a failure? I don't think it was a failure so much as it felt like retreading ground from HL2 with some interesting story bits thrown in there, and no real G-Man presence. It's brevity was actually a plus, because I could see some thinking there just wasn't enough story in there, and throwing mounds of enemies at the player would just feel like padding. Ep2 made up for that. |
