Title: The Other Sport That Is in Season... You know... Hockey.
Post by: cmlancas on October 09, 2007, 09:42:04 AM
I didn't see another thread for Hockey related stuffs other than the fantasy page, so....

How about Tampa Bay this year? It looks like Prospal is finally coming out of his shell (I'm one of his biggest fans considering I've met the guy IRL, super, super guy), Vinny is picking up right where last year ended and Richards is producing on the second line.

Also, the defense looks okay while Boyle is out. Holmqvist is doing just fine in goal... can anyone stop us?

It didn't happen last year.

What's so much different this year for ya'll? Everyone can drink in America now?

Go Canucks! They looked like crap in the first period of their first game, and the 3rd period of their 2nd game, but the rest has been decent so far. Hopefully they can get some more scoring this year so poor Luongo doesn't have to give up 1 goal or less in order to win.

Bolts are gonna suck, all their cap is spent on three players. They'll be fighting for the 8th playoff spot at best.

Flames/Canucks game on Saturday was a great game, the third period was insane action going back and forth. I have the Centre Ice package for October, so I can watch any game I want, which is pretty nice.

Wife hates it, she thinks i already spend too much time watching football, and adding hockey to the mix isn't helping.

Center Ice is a godsend. I am not in a hockey market, so I don't get blacked out and can watch all the games I want. Very good times.

Trying to tout the Bolts around the f13 hockey crowd is near impossible, no matter how hard I try.

We will make believers of you all. Just you wait ;)

My Minnesota Wild has started off well. I haven't been able to watch any games yet, what with the Cubs having been in the playoffs and Liverpool involved in Europe AND the NFL starting. Plus, I think VS. only has like 3 Wild games all goddamn season, so I may not be watching much hockey for a while.

Go Wild!

Dallas is sucking early, and that's my original team. Atlanta is sucking worse, and it's my home team. Ugh.

I live directly between Ottawa and Toronto. Which means that somehow Montreal games are blacked out too.

I love Centre Ice like a cousin, but the blackout shit is going to inspire a shooting spree some time in the near future, I think.

I do so love the fact that several years of consecutive sold out games means no blackouts in Vancouver. I just have to come to terms with the fact that there are about a dozen PPV games this year :(

Friend of mine is a Canucks fan and his father lives in Vancouver, so he gets his satelite bill sent to his father so that he's considered to be part of the Canucks region, which means he doesn't get the stupid Sportsnet blackout of the Canucks games. That drives me nuts, I have 4 Sportsnet channels and unless the game is in the Alberta region I can't watch the game. Plus, the Sportsnet HD is the Ontario channel, so none of the Flames games are HD :(

Boo hoo.

No HD on Center Ice makes me a sad panda. I can't even get HNIC in HD. Vs games occasionally show up in HD, and NBC games. I hate having to choose a better picture over far better announcers. God the American network announcers are fucking horrible.

In Florida, the HD sports package always picks up both Florida and TB games with no blackouts. It only costs $5 extra.

In other news, I can't wait to watch the games on my new 42" once I get done doing research. <3

Just a few days ago I found out we have an NHL team in Ft. Lauderdale lol. I attended an Adirondack Red Wings game when I was a kid and it was a blast, even though I had no idea what was going on. After a TF2 purchase, Panthers tickets are next on my list.

No HD on Center Ice makes me a sad panda.

You sure about that? I'm pretty sure I have some CI HD channels, and when I checked my satelite provider I find this:

Follow your favourite team and players with NHL® Centre IceTM which includes over 1,000 out-of-market games with up to 6 games on select nights in HD!

I get mine through Comcast. I wonder if there are HD channels on satellite and not cable? That would severely piss me off.

I've been trying to save money on my cable bill by skipping the digital package.  So.  No hockey.  I don't think I can take it any longer.

Or CI just picked up the TSN and CBC HD channels and re-broadcasts them? /shrug

I only get one feed per game- If there was an HD feed, wouldn't it require another separate channel? Does your menu on your TV screen indicate when a game is in HD, or is it just a random thing? I can't imagine them sending ONLY the HD feed out- that would prevent all the non HDTV folks from viewing that particular game, yes?

This just reminded me that my TiVo's schedule of channels/games for Center Ice is different than the one my cable box uses, which means TiVo records the wrong goddamned thing. It wasn't an issue last year; I happily recorded all Canucks games via a Wishlist Season Pass with no problems. Now I have to manually record them with the cable DVR on my big TV (TiVo is in the bedroom).

I have a headache now. I just want to watch hockey, preferably in HD!

I was under the impression that HD coverage came through the network, not the provider.

For example, I get Fox Sports South (which carries Panthers or Lightning games) in HD if I pay for it.
I also get seven other HD channels, should I order it.

I've seen the same channels on DirectTV (My university's rec room has a nice HDTV that usually has sports on).

I would assume you could get them through Verizon and Comcast, but I could be wrong.

Canucks vs. Flyers was PPV I gather  :-D

Flyers sure know how to pick the character guys eh? First two suspensions of the year got to Philly players once Boulerice gets his 5-10 games.

You don't need to have a TV capable of receiving HD to watch an HD channel. The major news networks send out HD signals you can pick up with an HD antennae for free. If you have an HD television and your provider (say, Comcast) does not provide an HD signal upgrade in your area, you are up shit creek and will have to watch a game in lo-res. The networks have to provide the signal to begin with, but if your cable service has not upgraded your grid to HD, the antennae is the next best option.

Woooo, Kipper signs a 6 yr/$35 million deal. Averages out to a cap hit of $5.8 million which is VERY resonable imo. Sutter is doing a decent job getting the core signed to decent contracts. Next up will be Phaneuf and then he'll probably sign Huselius or Langkow, but not both.

Even for a hockey nut like me, hockey in October is a tough sell… …especially when half the teams sleepwalk through the first month anyway (excepting younger players and coaches trying to prove themselves…)…

…but between Center Ice & HD Net, I've caught a bit of hockey, early on…

* …Anaheim looks like they're still hung over from post Cup celebratory bashes…
* …Atlantic (or whatever it's called now) division looks like the toughest with Penguins, Rangers, and improved Islanders, Flyers…
* …would be not a surprise if Devils finish last in division
* …Blues actually have a decent squad
* …Ottawa is a machine
* …Phoenix, Atlanta and Nashville are awful, and will be casting lots for first round pick during offseason
* …LA has some impressive young forwards

Most all the Center Ice games are not in HD though they'll take (usually, but not always) a game or two a night and it will also be on a HD channel (like 94-96)…

HD Net (channel 79 on DirecTV) also shows NHL games in HD though the announcers (at least the play by play guy) sound like nails scraping a chalkboard…

Supposedly, VS. has a HD feed, but my satellite receiver (and satellite too), which I just purchased/upgraded <2 years ago from DirecTV, needs upgraded again, as DirecTV is rolling out like 75+ new HD channels, but HD sets they sold previously need upgraded… …but like stated, they always (and local teams appear too in HD) float games in HD in the 94-97 range…

Hockey in HD is nice.

I think hockey is the sport that benefits most from HD (football is 2nd, and everything else is way behind IMO). I can occasionally get the VS HD feed on my cable system- they share an HD channel with the Golf Network. This is all well and good until I can't watch a playoff game in HD because there is some fucking 3rd world golf tournament going on. RAGE.

All you guys talking about blackouts and PPV for local games scares me.

I see every Flyers' game that airs, mostly on the local Comcast feed. If I had an HDTV, they'd pretty much all be in HD except for the 4 or so games a year that are not on Comcast or HD national telecast.

I used to get every Leafs game, but now they have their own "Leafs TV" channel that gets a few games exclusively, and I refuse to pay for that otherwise useless channel.

I used to get every Leafs game, but now they have their own "Leafs TV" channel that gets a few games exclusively, and I refuse to pay for that otherwise useless channel.

I noticed that. The other night I was all "where's the Leafs game?" (this only beause they were playing the Penguins, I think). There was nothing else on TSN, CBC, even Sportsnet (puke).

So there it was, on Leafs TV.

... I watched it on Centre Ice.

So apparently Leafs TV has enough weight to piss everyone off and get some exclusive games (good ones, too - Penguins are a pretty big ticket) - but not enough to get their feed blacked out on Centre Ice like... well, everyone else. I suppose this all has to do with what company owned the other company when the bigger company ate the smaller company in an attempt to corner the market for the really big company.

Or the Leafs just suck in every way imaginable.

Title: Re: The Other Sport That Is in Season... You know... Hockey.
Post by: Strazos on October 31, 2007, 03:32:40 PM
Not sure why they would black out a game on Centre Ice if the viewer is not even in the market to receive Leafs TV anyway.

Title: Re: The Other Sport That Is in Season... You know... Hockey.
Post by: WayAbvPar on October 31, 2007, 03:52:21 PM
They may block the home feed but not the visiting team's feed, perhaps? Although I HATE watching the Canucks when I can't hear Hughson and Garrett, it beats the hell out of not watching them at all, and often the visiting feed is the one Centre Ice shows (usually on early East Coast games).

Which emoticon do I use to represent *this up here*?

For the Leaf games, it isn't a blackout thing, The Leafs have sold out every fucking game for the past like... 50 years? Something stupidly ridiculous, really, us Toronto fans are fucking retarded, we accept it and still follow on and cheer. Were like the Religious Fundie version of a hockey fan. I've never had a leaf game blacked out though, only these exclusive games on Leafs TV now.

The Leaf TV thing is a pure money grab thing, owned by the same set of people who own the Leafs themselves to the best of my understanding.

"Hey, these idiots will pay hundreds of dollars for seats, lets make the shits who can't afford that, pay for games on the TV!"

I like Rick Peckham and Bobby Taylor for SUN Sports. Granted TB is starting to suck giant cock because Torts refuses to adjust the two-line pass home-run offense against the trap, but their color guys are really good. The radio guy out here screams like a parrot when the Bolts score.

On a side note, most of the guys on VS. are chumps and suck at calling hockey games. Same with NBC when they had the olympics.

The thing is, if Versus wants to make a new ESPN as you say, (and spent so much for the broadcast rights) why don't they you know, show more games?  There are games practically every night of the week, yet VS shows 2-3 games a week.

Though Lange toned it down a bit for TV audience.

I saw the Bieksa one live and nearly vomited. I had given up hope for the game and gone to bed before Salo's. Update from the Canucks' website is reasonably positive, however-

Quote
Sami Salo and Kevin Bieksa spent the night in the hospital after serious injuries in Thursday night's game.

Salo’s orbital bone wasn’t broken, but the puck just caught his nose as Edler attempted to clear it across the ice.

“In Sami’s case, he’s still also waiting to get operated on, they’re not sure if they’re going to need to put a plate in the upper part of the sinus. [The orbital bone] is not broken, but the nose obviously is, and they might need to put a plate in there. So, we’re not sure of the extent of that injury,” Vigneault said.

Bieksa’s calf muscle was severely sliced as Vernon Fiddler' skate blade cut across the back of his right leg in a second-period pile-up. The cut is much deeper than expected. Vigneault said from what he saw, it was nearly three inches deep.

“The last update I got this morning before stepping on the ice was Kevin was still waiting to be operated on," said Vigneault. "But obviously his calf muscle was torn or ripped, so we’re looking at anywhere from 6-8 weeks probably at this time.”

No fracture and no Achilles damage is fantastic news.

I'm always amazed that you almost never see skate cut incidents.

Anyone remember when Mikael Renberg took a skate to the face back in the 90's?

Since they are almost always the early game on HNIC, I see more than enough Leafs games. I miss Tie Domi.

Speaking of HNIC, it was nice to see the Sedin sisters found their way to the scoring sheet finally. The only team I enjoy seeing the Canucks beat more than the rat-faced douche *(Ryan Smyth) and his Avalanche are the Flames. And they are coming soon.

This game should be full of comedy. Ottawa has lost what, one game so far? Means they're due for another loss, rite?  :|

Only if it were a playoff game.

Or if the Leafs were already out of playoff contention.

Hi. The Lightning can't buy a win recently.

 :heartbreak:

That reminds me, if tickets are still available does anyone want to catch the Penguins when they come down to Tampa to beat up on the Lightning?

Let's see:

http://www.stubhub.com/tampa-bay-lightning-tickets/?ticket_id=99393322

Some good seats are still available. Prices are unbelievably high right now though. If you wait until closer to gametime, they get much less expensive. For example, I sat at center ice, one more row up, for $38. $140 is ridiculous atm; you could probably beat that price on eBay.

If I could get Center Ice in HD, I'd buy it.  Apparently, I can't.  At least not with Comcast DC.  Fuckers.

The other problem with NHL on VS rather than ESPN is that it seems to have greatly diminished the amount of attention hockey gets on Sportscenter and other "news" programs on ESPN.  Which is an issue because ESPN is probably the biggest agenda-setter in US sports.

I also miss Mike Lange. Joe Beninati is a decent broadcaster, but he braodcasts the fucking Caps, for chrissake.  I can't watch that shit too often.

My girlfriend and would love to go. Knock on wood, the Lightning have never lost a game we have attended. :)

If the tickets come down close to $70 or so a pop, I'd be interested. Otherwise, the tickets are a straight up ripoff; they retail for about $150.

Leafs beat Buffalo 3-0

If only they could somehow tap into Raycroft's random awesome on demand, they might actually be competitive.

Shhhhh. Don't tell anyone, but the Canucks have won 3 in a row. and are undefeated in their division. The bad news is that Bieksa is going to be out a lot longer than they originally predicted, according to reports.

Attn: Crosby is a bitch.

He REALLY needs to stop crying and faking penalties. Smith leans a stick on him (LEANS), and he crumples to the ice like he was shot? Cry more newb.

Also, it's not a great idea to try to get into someone's face, like Mike Richards', and bitch and moan, if you have no intention to ever fight...ever. Richards would destroy Crosby, and it would be sweet.

Watching this in person was also great.

Anyone see the Bolts' avalanche of goals in the second? Watch out, Southeast!

Took me awhile to find this one.

So anyone want to laugh at my Leafs with me? 0-3 on their little Cali excursion, something like six games below 500, rapidly competing for dead last in the East (and the entire league at this rate, watch out LA!) and the owners still haven't decided who the fuck is in charge of the team and still clinging to a hope for a playoff birth!

To sum it up:  :awesome_for_real:

PS. Am I the only one who still watches hockey here?

Nope, still watching my Flyers.

They just won their 22nd game of the season on Thursday. They didn't hit that mark until Game 82 of last year, in April.  :awesome_for_real:

Penguins finally lost a game tonight.  At least Crosby had some goals.

Without even looking at it, I'm gonna assume that's Rick Nash's goal?

That was all sorts of awesome.

Shows how much I keep up with hockey, I didn't even know the Columbus Blue Jackets were a NHL hockey team.    Shut up, Linda Cohn!

If it makes you feel any better, their broadcast team and arena announcer are fit for a junior team. CLOWNSHOES.

There are two guys in my class who constantly wear Bluejackets hats.  It's the only hockey gear I've seen on school.  Proud underdogs.

Leafs are officially dead last in the east!

Only LA is worse in the entire league.

The Trade deadline should be HIGHLY entertaining for Leaf fans.   :oh_i_see:

Canucks are pissing their season away 1 injured blueliner at a time. Hopefully they can trade Salo or Mitchell in the offseason for some offensive help.

I went to the Philly-Rangers game in Philly when I was visiting my parents last weekend. I thought the NHL had cut back on fighting!

2 10 minute misconducts
10 5 minute fightings including one 4 v 4 brawl.

and a ref got cut in the face by a skate.

Rangers won 2-0. Boo! But I enjoyed it.

I think the Flames/Oilers game last Saturday had double-digit fighting minors. I miss the old Battle of Alberta when Doug Risebrough was slicing up Marty McSorley's jersey while Riser sat in the penalty box.

I happened to catch the prequel to that (when Edmonton won 5-0) earlier in the week, so I TiVo'ed the Saturday game. Only disappointment was that the Flames won  :uhrr:
