Title: Cheerleaders really are distracting
Post by: Trippy on October 07, 2007, 12:18:19 AM
From Jesse Palmer's column:

http://www.tsn.ca/tsn_talent/columnists/jesse_palmer/

Quote
Third Down: Cheerleader-gate

This past week the NFL issued a memo to all 32 teams which instructed home teams not to allow their cheerleaders to warm up, stretch or perform in front of the opposing team during the pre-game.  While I don't think that teams intentionally use this ploy to gain an advantage, I can say from experience that cheerleader distraction during games is real.

While starting for the New York Giants in week 16 versus the Dallas Cowboys in 2005, I found out just how distracting cheerleaders can be.  In that game we started several drives inside our own 20-yard line, with each drive following a TV timeout.  With my back to the end zone in the huddle, I became frustrated because I couldn't make eye contact with any of my 10 teammates as I was trying to call our plays; they were all staring right at the Dallas Cowboy cheerleaders who were performing in the end zone.

I remember our offensive linemen shaking their heads in utter amazement, but the classic line came from our tight end, Visanthe Shiancoe, who interrupted me in the middle of a play call and said, "Jesse you really need to turn around and see this..."

Hell, I always thought that was THE POINT of Cheerleaders.  Psychological Warfare.  It's not like NFL players can bang sword on shield and threaten to cut off tonkers.

Weird, I thought they were there to make football entertaining.

Making A Football entertaining would be eliminating much of the game delays.

IMO.

Did You Know: Each year, an All*Star Squad of cheerleaders gets selected from each league in the NFL to strut at the Pro Bowl.

If it wasn't for cheerleaders, I wouldn't pay any attention to my fantasy team.

As long as one enjoys "a" professional sport at least, and they're not acting out some jaded nerd stereotype, then it's OK to hate football.

I love baseball, so I get a little irritated that football has taken over as America's sport of choice.

Edit: It still blows my mind that I see cheerleaders whenever I go to Marlins games. I'm from New England and there's no telling what would happen if we had cheerleaders at a Red Sox game.

Piss on team sports in general.  Buncha millionaires drafted by a corporate t-shirt marketing syndicate, rooted for by a buncha dumbfucks who don't care about anything except which division of said t-shirt syndicate is branded with the name of their home city.  Give me a prizefight of any stripe (boxing, martial arts, whatever) any day.

Yeah, because Boxing is never rigged nor played due to financial considerations.

(Nondescript statement of disagreement showing a regret that team sports were lost on you).

Ironwood is right, btw. The direction UFC is pursuing right now with Dana White is a perfect example of the moneyhattery you talk about, and perhaps even worse than some team sports.

There is no professional sport I enjoy watching. I ride my bike too much for my own good, but watching others do it is boring as hell. I think I could like baseball, but they don't do that around here much and I had the opportunity to see it on TV once in 33 years.

They didn't show Cheerleaders in that game, though.

Watching a Red Sox game at Fenway, I have discovered, is unlike 95% of other baseball events.  I'm sure some NYY and some other games get to the same level of intensity as an average Red Sox game but for the majority of the league it's an entirely different experience.  It's unfair to other teams sports to compare them to that.

Even the average woman in Boston can recite ERA's and batting averages... I was at a club downtown Saturday night and pointed out a gorgeous blond to my friend dancing with some guy but with her eyes glued to the Friday ALDS highlights on one of the monitors.

I was at the Indians v. Yankees game on Thursday night (12-3 game) and it was intense. I've never been to a baseball game that was as loud as that one. Pretty much every seat was filled (other than those vacated by Yanks fans) right up until the last out.

I've actually heard the opposite of Yankees games. It's become more of "the place to be" rather than a traditional baseball game and it just isn't that loud anymore. Even the announcers last night commented how people were already filing out during the 8th inning of the Yankees game. Then again it could be that the people I talk to are all Yankee haters... I'm sure any Yanks fan will say their home games are like a 4 hour orgasm...

That has to be countered by another made-up hot cheerleader quickly.

Did they actually seam her shorts to make it look like she has monster camel toe?  I guess the wanted to be sure the players on the bench other side of the field would be distracted as well.

Basically a cheerleader:

I'm a big baseball fan myself (never seen any cheerleaders at a baseball game before...).  Any particular reason you are interested in it?  I know its only popular in select regions outside the united states, so it kind of interests me to listen to Europeans who actually have an interest in it.

I will agree with the different feeling you get when you go to a game in Boston, for instance.  They go balistic there.  It was the same way in Japan and Korea.  Japanese games I went to were nuts.  The intensity of the crowed was pretty cool.  They also have cheerleaders (both female and male.....the male ones wear these big black jackets that look very facist, and do wierd stiff arm motions in tune to the music...)

I like it when the band of wealthy mercenaries drafted by the division of Major League Baseball(tm) based in the major city closest to my location wins a game.  It's like I'M winning.

Without game delays where would you slot in all that lucrative, lucrative advertising?  And don't even suggest cutting out the advertising, that's what makes football an American sport.

They should send a camera crew with Blackwater, it'd be a ratings hit and keep Iraq going for decades. The next-gen Cops.

I played either baseball, football, soccer, basketball or whatever pretty much every day of my life from 7 through 15 or so and then only 2 or three times a week for the next 10.  I think many other people had very close to the same experience growing up.  I find it entirely unsurprising that people like to watch those games played at a very high level.

I grew up playing football and wrestling and still don't give a shit about sports.  If anything, pro sports really bore me.  I'd much rather watch a good NCAA rivalry game than anything on the professional level.  Those kids have more skin in the game, and that inherently makes for better viewing.  Of course, I still won't go out of my way to watch a game.  Just doesn't affect my life in the slightest.

This attitude befuddles and infuriates my old man.

Never thought about it, maybe it is the "One against many" aspect that is so obvious in baseball.

I was in Disneyworld in 1977, and I wanted a Vader helmet (the real deal) sooo bad, they had them in some specialty shop. I wouldn't be suprised if I bought a Vader suit some day. I would wear it to work, it might enhance customer relations.

You will not print this form out. Give in to your feelings, you know it to be true.

You've seen the collegehumor with the Vader supervisor, right? Or is it just on youtube. Either way, it's stuck somewhere in Useless Videos.

Hilarious for those of you who haven't seen it.
