Title: Misc. gaming news for 9/16
Post by: Trippy on September 16, 2004, 08:00:54 PM
From Gamespot: Matrix Online jacking in on January 18, 2005 (http://www.gamespot.com/news/2004/09/16/news_6107629.html)

Also from Gamespot: Half-Life 2 RC released to VU (http://www.gamespot.com/news/2004/09/16/news_6107603.html)

From Slashdot: HardOCP Wins Against Infinium Labs (http://games.slashdot.org/games/04/09/16/2317236.shtml?tid=123&tid=1&tid=10)

The WhereIsPhantom website got crushed but you can read the court order text here (http://games.slashdot.org/comments.pl?sid=122123&cid=10273115). It also looks like Infinium is late in paying some of its employees.

Where do I sign up as saying "not likely?" Cuz that's just what this is, not likely.

GS: How solid is the January release date?

JH: I can assure you that it’s going to ship on January 18. From a technical standpoint, if we really wanted to not include other countries, we could have shipped it a little bit earlier. This is why we’re very confident in our ship date. Our decision revolves much more around maximizing the opportunity with the Matrix and reaching as many users as possible, and much less around things like a technological or production hiccup.

I dunno; that sounds pretty firm to me.  Pretty stupid too, though... The only other MMOG I have that launched in January was RuneScape, and it wasn't sold via retail stores.  EverQuest: OA launched in a February but it was a moderate success.  March - December is the traditional MMOG launching season.

Well at least the release date is revolutionary. Baby steps, baby steps.

Seriously had there even been a beta for it? Or is it still closed with NDA's active?

The beta's closed with an NDA preventing you from saying you're in it.

Regarding MXO, they seem to have aborted beta and pushed it back to November. At least they're suddenly talking about a closed beta in November. Beta testers can't complain due the NDA, so who knows. It's a possibility.

There have been posts from people who got MXO beta invites on different boards, so I'm guessing there is one.

You would be correct in saying that there is currently a beta for MxO and it is not just Friends, Family and internal.

The closed beta in November is for pre-order people. There's a closed beta going on right now as well.

Does it really matter when MXO gets released?

I just can't see a game based on a license that's pretty stale going anywhere. I mean 2 of the 3 movies were pretty underwhelming, and there's nothing going on with the license right now keeping the "Matrix World" in the public eye. No new movies, TV shows, books, anything. Game probably should have come out a couple years ago as people seem to have moved on.

Are there really tons of Matrix fans rabidly anticipating this? There are crazed LOTR fans, SWG, Star Trek, etc. but I don't think the Matrix fanbase has anything close to that.

Why do people feel the need to pretend they can be like Luke or Darth?

Please Discuss.

Because some people expect COH (with a different skin) and more to do than just exclusively whacking mobs.
