So yeah, out on the kook fringes of the martial arts there are these guys who try to act like they can knock a guy out without touching him.  You know, mess with their chi, use the force on them, whatever you want to call it.  You'll get a good idea of what I'm talking about during the demonstration at the beginning of this video.  That shit where the master is waving his hands and the students are all falling over, or wobbling around like a dizzied character in Street Fighter, isn't supposed to be an act.  The people involved apparently claim it's actually real.

And what's more it seems the old goat actually believed he had martial arts superpowers, because he went ahead and publicly took on an actual fighter quite willing to pummel him (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UDiRA7Idmcs).  Hilarity ensued.

I really want to know what the guy said afterwards.  What sort of cloistered buttfuck must his little school be if he could actually convince himself his shit would work on a genuine fighter?

Didn't this happen a few years ago? I think this guy made the rounds saying he could project it a few inches or something, people tested it and lo, nothing happened.

It could well be old as shit.  And this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JM_qg5d1YGI) is probably the test you're thinking of.  Fatass Dillman has been peddling that shit for decades.  But seeing some guy not fall over after not being hit isn't nearly as funny as watching some guy go "Hey, I'm in a fight... WTF HE IS PUNCHING ME!"

There was a repeat of a program that covered this on National Geographic Channel last in night.  Basically,  a couple of guys covering and debunking things.

How is it that people can believe this wacky shit in the first place?  It's like seeing the virgin mary on a dorito. 

Look at the first part of the video.  Those guys are actually falling over,  and when questioned I'm sure they'll say they felt something.  Or look at any show by a professional hypnotist.

The big part of the National Geographic special is the importance of psychology, mental state, and went on at great lengths about self-hypnosis.  People fool themselves into believing and reacting to things in a manner that makes it look supernatural.

One of the good parts of the show was looking at circus freaks and certain mystics who withstand amazing amounts of pain.  You know,  the guys that put needles or skewers through themselves.

The show had a doctor hook up a performer to a device that administered electroshocks.  Normal people dropped out at a rating of 4 to 6,  but this guy was going on like nothing was happening at a rating of 26.  The show's only conjecture was self-hypnosis/meditation allowed him to short-circuit the way the performers nerves reported pain.

I saw that NG show over the weekend. I have taken to randomly lifting my toes to prevent anyone from chi-ing me unawares. So far, so good.
