Title: Warhawk
Post by: schild on August 29, 2007, 05:47:32 PM

Spending $688 at Best Buy getting my PS3, Resistance, House Season 3, and the Computer AIDS infected Bioshock has left me kinda gunshy about spending more money on games.

Don't have it yet, will have it after another week or so as long as the reviews don't shoot it down.  It and Metroid Corruption are on my Amazon list, and my birthday's next week, so I'm in 'want it now but can't buy it in case someone got it for my birthday' limbo.

I have it and am in love.  I played for 10 hours in 2 days.  I can't stop.  I didn't even want to come to work today.

Most fun I've had with a team base shooter since DoD.

Are players actually hosting the game or is Sony providing dedicated servers to play on?

Sony provides the servers. I just slept for 13 hours. I'm going to play the ever-loving shit out of this when I get home today.

Title: Re: Warhawk
Post by: Kitsune on August 30, 2007, 06:30:03 AM
Players can host the game if they choose, but it's like hosting on a PC.  A dedicated server can't be played on locally, and a non-dedicated server can handle fewer players, 24 instead of 32.  Sony's hosting a fair number of dedicated servers, so easiest to just use theirs.

Title: Re: Warhawk
Post by: Trippy on August 30, 2007, 06:33:47 AM
So if you have two PS3s one can be the dedicated server with 32 players?

Title: Re: Warhawk
Post by: Kitsune on August 30, 2007, 06:46:02 AM
Yah.  But I doubt we'll see people lining up for the opportunity to buy spare PS3s for server duty.

As great as Warhawk sounds, I'm having just a bit of a difficult time paying $500-$600 for a console with barely any games on it.  That worked for Nintendo in the past because of cheaper consoles, but Sony's goliath has too high a barrier of entry.

Yeah. Sony just announced that they have no more of the 60 GB models in their inventory so they are all in the hands of retailers. I went to look at the list of games to see if it was now worth picking one up and I was like, "eh".

I just made the clan Bat Country with a tag of F13. Moaner, is your name Moaner in Warhawk? There's a bunch of (lol) Gamestop Managers who will probably be joining the clan.

I'm Happy_Hedonist in Warhawk.  With any luck I'll be playing all day tomorrow.

Oh yea, I don't have a mic yet.  I didn't think I'd actually play the game long enough to really justify one but now I'm thinking I'll pick one up this weekend.

Title: Re: Warhawk

Don't know. Won my first (and only game I played) by about 10-15 kills (go go SAM), and found out afterwards it was an unranked survey. Which is a shame, because when I was done, it definitely wasn't unraped.

Title: Re: Warhawk

Oh my fucking god.

I can't believe I let you fuckers talk me into buying this PIECE OF SHIT GAME. I'm probably returning it tomorrow.

No, I'm DEFINITELY returning it tomorrow. I hate it, I suck at it, and the matchmaking system is fucking AWFUL. Jesus Christ. It takes 20 seconds for it to just kick me out of a server telling me server is full. It happily lets me know that people are in games, but gives me NO ABILITY to talk to them with this lovely mike I got and plan to join a server. I can't join any of the 'official' servers (ok fine, it's launch day) so I just join random servers, and finally get in after trying about 30 times; it took me almost 20 minutes to actually get INTO a game (because it gets to ping the entire god damned server list EVERY TIME after you wait to not join a game. I want to shiv whoever wrote this piece of shit matching, seriously. WHAT THE FUCK IS THIS? Why even bother having "buddies"? I can't do shit but see them (I assume) killing shit, and not being able to join or communicate with them in any way.

So I FINALLY get in the game, right? Of course there are people who have been playing since beta, I spend 15-20m trying to figure out the keys to everything. I realize the keys suck and I hate using the top buttons for accel AND shoot, and having to take my hand off the maneuver control to actually switch weapons.... it's totally retarded so hey I wander into options and I find out you CAN'T REBIND THE KEYS!  OH JOY!

WHAT FUCKING GARBAGE PIECE OF SHIT GAME DOESN'T LET YOU REBIND ATTACK KEYS AND MAKES THE DEFAULT THE MOST UNWIELDY, EVER? THIS GAME APPARENTLY!!

So I manage to find my way to an airplane, take off, and I haven't gotten ANY air kills. I've been playing for like two hours now. I can't figure out how people mow me the fuck down, I can't seem to lock on like everyone else does, and people just camp in the anti-air turrets and shoot planes down. The control scheme is annoying, playing around with hover mode and air mode, it doesn't matter since I asplode in 3 seconds of getting off the ground anyway.

On the ground, I can get a kill or two, though magically everyone I fight against has been playing since beta and is super awesome at it. Fine, whatever. The only way I can get air kills is to camp in the fucking anti-air tower or with the bazooka. An when I do, I inevitably get knifed in the fucking BACK by the guy I didn't even see.

The game is pretty, but OH my FUCKING GOD I am NEVER listening to you assholes again.

That's a lot of talk to say you suck.

What was the problem with the default keys? Have you EVER PLAYED a fps/3ps on a console? EVER?

I don't even know where to begin. Your post is freaking me out, man.

Title: Re: Warhawk
Post by: bhodi on August 31, 2007, 07:09:37 PM
You can begin with some apologetic bullshit about how I should have known from the trailers what to expect. All it would have took was 10 minutes of actual play like I said, to know that not only was me and this game not meant to be, but seriously -- the game selection / buddy system on this game is a terrible, worthless, pointless waste of time. Good luck playing with ANYONE you know unless one of them owns a server. It's simply not going to happen.

The only way to co-ordinate shit is going to have to be logging into vent/TS, which kind of defeats the purpose of the microphone. There's no 'lobby' to group up, I just have to sacrifice a goat and and hit the join game button for the next 45 minutes, PRAYING there's a spot open. Which I fucking did, wanting to, you know, play with happy_hedonist. I have 4 fucking friends playing *RIGHT NOW* and I can't contact them or get in their games. There's no way to filter servers that are full (obvious omission?) and there's no way to filter servers that are 'almost full'.

Of course, I only get to try once every 30 seconds, because once select, it gets to sit and think.. and think.. and think... and then boot me out, and then it gets to refresh the server list! Play a game I paid for? Casual? Not possible, it took me almost HALF AN HOUR to find a game I could play in that would actually give me rank points -- the rest were just a deathmatch brawl. Hoo boy, nothing I like better than to get it in the face with a flamethrower two seconds after I spawn, when all I have is a pistol.

Yeah, I got good enough at the game after a few hours of play to be middle-upper middle game -- By camping the AA gun or driving the tank in. I finally figured how to use the lock-on missiles, and the plane is OK I guess but you get within 300 feet of the ground and it's instant fucking lock-on death-missiles. it's really just another fucking console FPS in the guise of something different. And I fucking HATE console FPS games.

The only saving grace of this game are the vehicles; without them I would have already thrown my controller at the fucking TV. God damn, if this is the best multiplayer the console can come up with, I should have spent that money on a gold-plated parchesi board -- because that would have been a lot more fun.

This game is trash unless you like regurgitated console FPS combat and 12 year olds who have been in the beta for a year.

Edit: What's wrong with the default keys? How about you have to STOP MANEUVERING TO CHANGE WEAPONS ON YOUR PLANE? They require the SAME THUMB to both control your plane and select your weapons! How fucking stupid is that? I hold the controller with both index fingers to L1+2 R1+2. I don't want to have to hold down L1 and L2 at the same time to use my primary attacks! It fucking sucks and I've never played a game that requires it -- even driving games that used R2 to accell don't make you use R1 for anything important. Normal console FPS don't force you to use R2 when you use R1 to fire your fucking gun (who came up with THAT as the attack button anyway? WTF?). You have FOUR WONDERFUL BUTTONS ON THE FRONT OF THE CONTROLLER, AND THEY DECIDE TO MAKE ONE JUMP AND THE OTHER GETTING INTO VEHICLES.

Why do I need to spell out the complete RETARDED nature of this control scheme? I want the thing I hit the most or second most to be on the front of the controller -- that's how it's been since fucking Nintendo, and that's what I'm used to. Not being able to change the scheme is just a curb stomp after I'm already on the ground from trying to get into a game.

Pretty game ruined by lackluster control scheme and atrocious player matching system. My gamespot review: 3.0

Title: Re: Warhawk
Post by: schild on August 31, 2007, 08:53:59 PM
The control scheme is fine. Also, Now that I know how to read the game list, I have no problems getting into games. Filters are your friend.

Anyway, what the hell are you talking about R2 and L2? What? They're Fire and Throw Grenade respectively, like every other PS2 and PS3 RTS.

I'm just not feeling the hate. I'm not gonna defend the game because you haven't actually attacked the game yet.

Edit: In conclusion: What the fuck are you doing buying anything with a gun on a console? X has always been jump/interact on console FPS titles. And Square has always been Do This, in this case Get In Vehicle.

Title: Re: Warhawk
Post by: bhodi on August 31, 2007, 09:18:09 PM
You really aren't reading what I'm saying. I've detailed very specifically that I use INDEX FINGERS to access the triggers. that means I can't push R1 (fire) and R2 (acell) at the same time without completely changing my grip.

Title: Re: Warhawk
Post by: schild on August 31, 2007, 09:24:25 PM
I use my index fingers also.

I don't know man, I just didn't have a problem with the controls, but I suspect I play a shitload more console games than you. You should see some of the wonky shit in stuff like Samurai Western and Nightshade. Or even Bujingai.

Title: Re: Warhawk

The control scheme is fine. Also, Now that I know how to read the game list, I have no problems getting into games. Filters are your friend.
You can't filter out servers that are full. You can't filter by servers that just need one or two more, nor can you sort by emptiness (if you're trying to get a bunch of people on a server). Still no way to co-ordinate group joins, and no way to join or notify a buddy that's been playing that you want a game with him.

The problems are endless... some of them may be small, and maybe my hate is getting in the way, but still. Suck. If you can hate KOTOR, I can hate this.

OK, so a lot of people are having the same problem joining games as me. It's a firewall issue and you have to forward ports, apparently, since this is the first game I've ever played online with the ps3, I did not know this. I still think the game sucks, but this would probably have made last night a LOT less frustrating with the joining issue.

I do agree with Bhodi that some actions are unwieldly.  For instance, I'd prefer to reload with Square or Circle.  Circle is only used in this game to crouch, which could have been mapped to something like R3.

Title: Re: Warhawk
Post by: Moaner on September 01, 2007, 12:12:01 PM
Finding an empty slot on one of the Sony hosted servers is a bitch right now.  I hope they add more because right now the ones that are up are almost always full.  The only time you can reliably find an empty slot on one is when a game finishes and a couple people leave before the next map starts.  It's frustrating.  There is no monthly fee and it supports peer to peer so I have my doubts as to whether there will be any motivation to add new servers or any real updates to the game other than map packs they can charge for.  Especially after UT hits and no one is left playing.

I do love the game though and I can't relate to the control issues.  They seemed natural enough to me and the only thing that bothers me is reloading.  I can't keep running and reload/switch weapons without using my pointer finger to press on the directional pad and this is uncomfortable at best.  I also have to readjust when I want to accelerate and fire at the same time in a jet thingy but so far it hasn't bothered me at all.

The lack of a party system is disappointing but I have honestly never played a shooter that had one and I've been playing these damn things since Doom.  Actually, I was impressed there was an in game utility for creating and managing a clan.  Also, I can join a game in progress!  What a fucking concept!

That's happened twice now.

The official Sony dedicated servers are blue which make them easy to pick out and they are all ranked.  If it's a peer to peer game there will be a little trophy to the left of the name of the server if the server is set to ranked.  Otherwise the little trophy will have a line crossed through it.  That's how I remember it anyways, I'm not able to check at the moment.

Also, your profile takes a few minutes to update.  Sometimes it takes up to 20 minutes before badges and stuff are actually awarded to your account.  Hopefully they address this shit but who knows.

I've only played on Sony servers and I've lost game progress several times.  Pretty fucking sad.

It's a fun game, I'm doing better at it, there's absolutely no lag, but still, you do one thing right, but screw up another, doesn't help the perception of the game.

Ok.

I like their medal system and all but wow, shit ton of In A Row requirements on EVERYTHING.

At least they have a Purple Heart.  Die five times in a row, 500 deaths.

Edit: I refuse to play this fucking game anymore until they fix the issues with their servers.  No stat tracking all night.  I'm having fun with the game but everything else is fucking broke.

Edit again: Oh, shit.  It's not In A Row.  It's In A Round.  If they fix the stat issues then I'll be way happier with this game.

Not enough players really. It seems cheapasses will eventually kill the PS3 rather than the lack of games (lol Wii).

The firmware update yesterday (1.92) on the PS3 updated the shit out of Warhawk. I have no problem connecting to 6/7, 7/8 games (games that aren't full but used to report as full). My ping times are fantastic. And the server refresh is ut2k4 fast now (if you've used the browser for it, you'll know what I mean). Anyway, yea, they addressed all of the previous connectivity concerns it would seem.

Servers have been down for awhile.  Maybe they're fixing it right now.  All I know is that while Bioshock was the most dramatic launch, Warhawk takes the award for most colossal fuck-up launch of what should have been a sure thing awesome game.

It looks like that Incognito and Sony really did take off the weekend and Labor Day instead of monitoring their game.

Uhm.

Yes.

I don't know.

First off -- I want to let all of you know that, contrary to some of the posts here...the team was not sailing around, enjoying the labor day holiday while you all played and earned medals that were ultimately never awarded to you :-)

We have been pretty quiet recently as we look to determine the root cause of some of the issues that some players are currently experiencing. Some items we have fixes for, some we are still working on -- probably not the exact response that you wanted to hear, but its at least a status update.

The three main issues that we are tracking are:

    * Stats and Ranking errors, delayed posting, missing stats.
    * "Connection Failed" or otherwise messed-up join game errors.
    * Network Drops/Disconnects (we have a fix for these and should be deployed in the next service window)

Our team here at Incognito along with our great support team in San Diego were, and continue to be, diligently working on these issues. I want to reassure everyone that while we *have* been quiet these last few days, it is NOT a sign that we are off on some tropical island somewhere...we are hard at work on the big issues.

I'm not going to spin it and say "oh....we just had soooo many players.....so successful...blah, blah, blah."

That's a bulls&*#$t PR answer. The fact of the matter is that, there were some unforeseen issues that occurred once we went live...plain and simple. From here on out, look for far more frequent updates from us...even if its bad news.

Lastly, while I appreciate everyone's excitement and feedback. I beg of you please don't call my office :-)

My phone number was posted here and in a few other places and while I have had really good conversations with some of you, the team and I need to focus all of our attention on getting you great service...not going though 300 voicemails a day - I do hope you can understand.

I'll post update here as they become available.

And -- Yes this is Dylan from Incognito...I'm not sure why I'm showing up as "Junior"!!! I need to talk to somebody about that :-)

Source (http://boardsus.playstation.com/playstation/board/message?board.id=warhawk&thread.id=82116).

Sounds quite promising.

Yeah finally some fucking communication from the developers.  Took way too long for that to show up though.  They are updating tomorrow (bleh) but that only appears to be fixing one of the issues and it isn't the stat tracking.

They pushed out a server patch today that supposedly resolves the stat issue.  If I wasn't neck deep in Stranglehold I'd check it out.

How are you liking that so far?

I played it on Hard.  It's a fun game, but you can pull more tricks off if you are on Casual or something.  Lot of fun though.  I want to see what Multiplayer is like.

Edit: According to the forums the stats are still broken for Warhawk.  Joy.  Stranglehold Multiplayer time.

My stats are updating again, I think.  It's hard to tell because it literally takes 10 - 15 minutes before your profile reflects your last couple games.  This was last night, I haven't had a chance to log in today.

Yeah looks like.  Stranglehold Multiplayer is chaotic crazyness, but I'm getting stats, so play on for Warhawk!
Finally got Airman 1st Class after being 7 points from it. ><

God DAMN I'm good at this game.  I wish I could take a screenshot of the last game I played.  I got 7 or 8 badges in one match cause I'm so fucking hot.

Edit: And it looks like stat tracking doesn't work on every server.  Those badges never got awarded. =\

I feel like I should hold the same opinion.  I really want to stop worrying about whether my stats will save or not.  It took forever for me to get Sergent and unlock the new custom skins.  Thankfully the only badge I have to worry about is getting Bandit 4x4 (It is seriously fucking impossible to kill someone with the jeep).

Still, I'm having fun playing, and as long as the stats update *eventually*, I'm good.

Holy shit!  I on the other hand, suck.  I just can't get used to that ps3 controller.  The dead spot is huge and it fucks with me.  I had the same problems with Resistance.

I think I played on the same server as you last night for about 45 minutes before my provider started fruiting (on Friday night GRRRR).  My server browser also showed another Happy_Hedonist, so either you can have duplicate names or something very screwy is going on.

EDIT:  At this point I'm staying away until the stats are fixed too.  Persona 3 beckons!

Even if you can't shoot straight there are plenty of ways to completely fuck over the other guy.  Mines, homing abilities, etc.  I just hit Chief Sergeant (Was much easier than getting Sergeant, probably because I waited overnight before rechecking my stats) and got Bandit 4x4, which means that I don't have to worry about badges for quite some time.  Hell the next medal I have to get is Team Cross, which requires 250 Team Wins.  I've got 26? But that's tens of thousands of points away.

Stats seem to update faster when it isn't prime time.

It's funny, I have no problems with the PS3 controller. For anything. I nearly love the thing. I'd be surprised if I replaced the sixaxis with the shockaxis, I love not having rumble (schild hates rumble, it was used badly more than it was used to great effect).

I probably shouldn't make excuses, I just suck with controllers.  But if I could replace the 360s Dpad with the PS3s, I'd be in controller heaven.  That still doesn't mean I'd play any better though, I just can't acclimate after years of mouse and keyboard.  Hell, I've even gotten frustrated with Bioshock on the 360 and it has generous autoaim.

Title: Re: Warhawk
Post by: LK on September 10, 2007, 08:27:15 AM
The thing that really bothers me is that this game is still a really buggy piece of shit on everything BUT the game itself.  I can't reliably get my stats from the stats servers, and when it fails, it resets my customization options.  It will also rank me up and inappropriate times, like apparently how I'm a Wingman even though I'm 780 points shy of the mark (Which shouldn't be the case since I played enough games to take me over last night ... )

The immediate issue appears to be fixed but I'm afraid that the more subtle issues won't be taken care of for some time, assuming something catastrophic doesn't happen.

I didn't like the aiming in Bioshock.  I'd routinely shoot through a Splicer, so I just gave up and went point blank on their asses.  Aside from the super spider slicers, I never worried about melee range with Splicers.

I have it now, and I apparently suck, because I spent four rounds being a pinata.  Rather than dodging missiles, I think I was actually attracting missiles meant for other people.  I'm going to tinker with the control settings and practice flying solo for a bit longer to see if I can fly a little less like a noob before venturing back out into the maelstrom.

I really, really, really wish Warhawk wasn't such a cocktease and got me to buy a PS3.

I really want to take Warhawk back.  Do companies like Play N' Trade do that? Give you a refund for fucking defective software?

The stats are broken again.  I had the best round of my life, 216 points, 8 Badges, fucking awesome round.  None of it recorded.

I'm done.  Even though I'm so fucking awesome at this game, I'm seriously done putting up with their bullshit.

I'm willing to sell my copy to anyone that wants it.  I'm sure I can get a use out of the Bluetooth Headset somewhere.

Gamestop will probably give you a full refund if you say it's broken. And it's not getting fixed. This is a pretty depressing scenario.

Damn you people are whiny, the make or break for a game isn't the gameplay but whether it lets you put a different helmet on your avatar after getting a badge that nobody else sees?  I know that this is a radical concept and all, but how's about playing for the fun and not for the MMOG food pellet?

Title: Re: Warhawk
Post by: LK on September 11, 2007, 09:11:28 AM
If that was the case, I'd rent the damn game instead of buying it.

Let's not forget server issues, freezes, and other critical issues that made it to launch day.

Really, there are tons of multiplayer experiences out there.  Having a good system of character and stat tracking that works is a surefire way to increase retention and give the player something to look forward to not only in each match but over time.  It was a smart decision on their part to implement it, and it's a real damn shame that it isn't working properly, because then there'd be so little to complain about! But instead it's a major bullet point on the box that doesn't work.

I logged in this morning AGAIN and saw that all my stats had been reset, and this time they weren't being restored.

Heh, I picked this up a day or two ago on a whim.  Took me twenty minutes to get into a game, even when it said there were 5 open slots, etc.  And then the fucking Warhawk doesn't go up or down without using the shoulder buttons?  Am I missing something here?  I did manage to ice some fools with the rifle, though.

There was a new patch on Friday the 14th that has helped a ton with the stats issues.  I cant say its perfect... but i managed to make a rank or two this weekend.

That aside... even with the stats problems this is a helluva fun game.  Imo the stats/rank just adds an mmo grind element to the game that i dont really give a shit about.
