Title: Unreal Tournament 3/2k7
Post by: schild on August 29, 2007, 06:02:40 AM
My god. It's full of stars. (http://www.gametrailers.com/player/24261.html)

I'm going to play the ever-loving shit out of this. I'm glad it comes at the tail-end of the season. I just bout keeled over when I saw the stasis field.

I wish I wouldn't have watched that.

I have to decide whether I'm going to upgrade my PC this fall or play this on PS3 until next summer and then upgrade.  Between this and TF2 though it's going to be extremely difficult not to drop $1k on a new computer though.

Vehicles aren't the only thing in the game. Even in matches where there are tons of vehicles, I'll still hoof it and use a rocketlauncher or something. But that defensive vehicle is an entirely different beast. And the spider vehicle they showed seems more like a mech. Mechs aren't vehicles. I mean, TECHNICALLY, you ride them. But they play completely differently. Also, holy shit it's gorgeous and smooth.

Vehicles are fucking awesome. Any game is made better by the inclusion of vehicles. Mechs are fucking awesome too. Any game is made better by the inclusion of mechs.

That is a stupid, stupid thing to say.

I said it before, last time this came up, and I'm sticking to it. I just have this thing for vehicles.

You were wrong then. This isn't about "sticking to it." This is about just being flat out wrong. Go play Counterstrike or Timesplitters and explain how they'd be better with vehicles.

Don't you remember the APC in counterstrike? Didn't work very well, but it still added a bunch of fun to the gameplay. There's nothing like crashing into the room and all spilling out of the vehicle... I think it was a shame it didn't get added into many of the maps.

I've never played timesplitters.

I truly hope you never set foot in any sort of decision making meeting about the design of an FPS.

I've never played timesplitters.

He's got you there.  I only played the second one.  That's why I now have a deathly fear of red hands with smiley faces on them.

I'd also suggest Bioshock would not be better with vehicles, nor Thief: The Dark Project, nor Phantom Dust, nor Eternal Darkness.  Maybe you just mean traditional FPSes, in which case I might agree with a few exceptions.  Some games should have either skipped the vehicles or done them properly.

Hell, with BF2 out and Warhawk and CoD4 on the way - and the existence of Halo - you could say that all vehicles do is make the games in the genre even harder to tell apart.

Oh, let's not forget Enemy Territory.

Adding vehicles to an FPS is the new "WWII as a setting."

Title: Re: Unreal Tournament 3/2k7
Post by: bhodi on August 29, 2007, 09:00:31 AM
I haven't played bioshock, phantom dust, eternal darkness, but half-life added vehicles well. Riddick director's cut was great with the added mech/suit stuff; Thief I admit may be difficult to add vehicles into, so I'm willing to revise -- Any multiplayer FPS with CTF/deathmatch/team gameplay is better with the inclusion of vehicles ;)

You probably didn't like the assualt maps either. The fact is that I find deatmatch / team deathmatch boring as hell and vehicles tend to spice it up a bit by requiring different tactics.

Wrong. I fucking loved Assault. I was an assault whore.

Onslaught bored me to tears.

That's probably because it featured vehicles, you vehicle hater. I hope you have to walk everywhere from now on. On foot. And stuff.

Ha, my unspoken example of "Some games should have either skipped the vehicles or done them properly." was Half-Life 2.

Escape from Butcher Bay was fucking awesome no matter how you sliced it.  The mech was a gold nugget amongst a pile of precious metals.

NO FUCKING IN THE COURTYARD

Oh god I'm going to have to buy a PS3 or a new video card (and possibly more RAM...they released baseline / reccomended specs on this yet?)

PS3 is more economical than a PC upgrade.  From experience.

Does the PS3 have a keyboard and mouse?

Title: Re: Unreal Tournament 3/2k7
Post by: Yegolev on August 29, 2007, 10:52:57 AM
It has USB slots, so the question should be "Do you have a keyboard and mouse?" or "Does this game support keyboard and mouse?"  Of course, I'm no advocate of traditional FPS on console, I'm just talking about the economics here.  I spent $900 on upgrading my PC this past February and I don't feel like it was a great investment.

Yah, I imagine the UT scene is a bit too competitive to go up against PC users if you're using thumbsticks.

I liked Onslaught a great deal.  Didn't care much for any other mode.  I never did play retail, however.  Buying competitive FPS games for me just leads to disappointment.

..."Does this game support keyboard and mouse?"

That's more what I meant to ask. I don't have a problem with FPS on a controller, but many here do and you can't argue that K/M is a better control for FPS.

I am apparently hard to impress.  It looks ok, but being vehicle-centric is a bit of a turn off for me.  I've always preferred infantry games. My big question is: Do they have a version where jumping around like a moron on crack negatively affects your aim?  If not, then I've lost hope in all FPS games.

UT has never been about realism. It's the epitome of 'jump the hell around and spam crazy looking weapons at each other in wild arenas' FPS play.

Ugh I'd have to get a USB adaptor for my keyboard.  and I was really just thinking of going up a generation or two in video cards.

Man, that statis field looks rad. LOL MATRIX BOX

The Unreal Engine has always ran fantastically well on any PC I've owned, and I'm sure I won't run into any issues with this - even though I'd still like to try it on my PS3.

So that stasis thing effects everything coming in?  If that's the case, that's pretty neat, but doesn't do anything except make people wait outside the box for you to emerge, since whatever you fire in there is just going to go slow as well.

The PS3 version does indeed support mouse and keyboard.  Look here (http://utforums.epicgames.com/showthread.php?t=574996).  It's locked at 30fps though.

BF1942 is the only FPS that I've played where circle strafing wasn't rewarded and I quit playing that when everyone learned that they could dolphin dive.  I also agree with your assessment... which is one of the contributing reasons for my lack of interest.

The Rainbow 6 series of games punished you severely for that sort of thing. Heck you couldn't even really move and fire at the same time if you wanted to hit anything at a distance. It's been a while but I believe America's Army is that way as well.

AA has its own variety of gameplay and balance problems.

I'm generally a fan of Good Shooters; time period, vehicles, whatever.

There are a lot of games with vehicles that I hate.  I could take 'em or leave 'em in HL2.  But the jeep maps in CS were awesome.  And all of the basic vehicles in UT are similarly awesome.  I mean:

How does it get any better than a dune buggy with retractable blood-encrusted scythe blades?  OH WAIT IT DOESN'T.

I gotta agree with Samwise on this. Vehicles make shooters better, especially when they are the fat bags of awesome that was UT2k4's vehicles.

I agree on the Battlefield thing, but I also like the UT playstyle. You need to have games for each playstyle, which is why it sucks to have the less-jumpy style of Battlefield ruined by tards.

Was Onslaught the one with objectives? Haven't played UT in a long time, maybe since the original or second one or something. Didn't play much UT2k4 anyway, was too busy with BF1942 back then iirc. Anyway, the playmode with objectives kinda sucked because everyone seemed to learn some cheese method that ended the round in 30 seconds.

Fun game, but it is online, so people cheat and act like douchebags. Fuckin' people.  :geezer:

Sky, Assault was the first Objective based mode. Onslaught was merely a CAPTURE THIS POINT AND HOLD IT mode.

There are enough games for vehicle-tards out there. I really wish they hadn't introduced it to UT, but it seems at the very least they're trying to mix it up with the new revision.

UT2k4 vehicles FTW. Not necessarily because the vehicles are OMG amazing, but because the ground combat doesn't suck. UtT2k4 is the only game that has managed to have decent ground AND decent vehicle combat that I can think of. I <3 the vehicles in 1942, but the infantry game sucked balls. Hopefully they don't screw the pooch in UT2k?.

Wow, I forgot about the new Unreal.

I'll have to try it out when I can. I loved the previous Unreal games.
