Title: Return of SideWinder brand... LCD ON A MOUSE
Post by: Nonentity on August 22, 2007, 11:32:24 AM
MS SideWinder brand returns, with a gaming mouse.

http://www.microsoft.com/hardware/gaming/productdetails.aspx?pid=100

That... is dumb.

I don't know what else to think about it.

That is a comfortable looking mouse.

They're talking about offering this at $80 which seems reasonable for a 2000-dpi programmable mouse with a few doohickeys added.  I wonder if they're going to drop the Habu brand they just created (which pretty much serves the same market) in favor of the Sidewinder name.

FUCKING FINALLY SOMEBODY PUTS THE THUMB BUTTONS IN AN OVER/UNDER POSITION.  Jesus, I am sick to death of Logitech's front/back thumb buttons, I find them awkward as hell to use.  I may have to buy this stupid-looking mouse for the thumb buttons alone.

They're pretty easy for me, I just press forward with the tip of my thumb and back with the joint.

This is not as fast as stacked buttons.

I would disagree. I hit the buttons the same as Cheng, and I can do it much faster than lifting my thumb and moving it vertically to another button. Although it really depends on how you hold your mouse. If your a finger holder like me, the Logitech buttons are perfect for you, if your a palm holder, the buttons are a bit misplaced.

While I like the button placement, that mouse looks so, so uncomfortable. Especially with the L and R buttons.

It's an example of Form over Function.

I looked at the accessory slot on it. And thought... "And you can store your bud in it."

The "Shape Designed For Handling" intrigues me.

Are we reading the same article?  The only thing I can find on the LCD is that it displays DPI or macro-status icons.  I'm all about a mouse with built in macro functionality, having to download programs to bot boring-but-useful things takes precious time away from botting those things.  My MX510 is getting upgraded soon, MS might actually get some money out of me for this baby.

I mean more money, because I totally paid for my copies of windows, and office, and all those other programs legally installed on my machine.

Um, why in the shpincter of hell would you want to have something like your DPI displayed? I know my mouse is set to 1400, hence the increased precision. That's all i care about - i don't need some tacked-on screen telling me what my current DPI is...

If you never change your DPI setting while in a game that feature isn't for you. If you do, then it's nice to get some feedback what the current setting is. The Logitech MX 518 uses 3 LEDs to indicate its three fixed DPI settings but the Sidewinder apparently allows you to customize the DPI in which case an LCD that can display digits might be more useful..

Or it may be for the same reason some gamers have neon lights and clear side panels in their cases.
