Title: Burning Crusade Client Download
Post by: Venkman on August 15, 2007, 04:31:18 PM
I re-upped just now and noticed they offer the ability to download the Burning Crusade client. This would by default be much newer than my circa-November 2005 install disks, so I'm downloading. However, is this the full game? Or will it look for a previous WoW install and patch that?

They used the term "upgrade" all throughout the announcements for it, and as best as I can remember it requires a WoW install and will patch it up to 2.0.

Bleh. I am really really not looking forward to patching this beast.

Just do it before you go to bed and let it run all night.  Of course it will probably time out and crash multiple times like mine did the last time I tried that...

You can also go find the free trial and download that.  It's far more up to date than what you currently have on disk.

Then just don't use the free code thingie.

What really sucked was that I upgraded to BC after the 2.x patches.  When I installed BC it downgraded the game to 2.0 and I had to repatch to get the game current.  Luckily I still had the patches in my WoW folder, otherwise I'd be looking at 350Mb of downloads.

Don't you have to restart the client manually multiple times after each incremental update ?

Yes, as well as after each patcher update.  Also, you need to re-click the NDA after each major update.  It's a pain in the ass process, and one I'm glad happens only infrequently.

I've noticed when coming back that they usually seem to accumulate a bunch of patches into a jumbo patch so you don't have a million smaller downloads. I think the most I've ever downloaded is maybe 4. With all the appropriate ports open on my router I have no problems at all with their patcher either.

edit: bah, foiled by quotes again. heh

I used the BC trial DVD they sent me and it installed on top of my long unpatched version of vanilla WoW just fine, though I did have to download BC patches, but I assume the direct DL client has the most recent major patch in it already.

I only had to re-agree to the TOS and EULA once. Every other time the launcher actually pulled down the torrent and then patched. But I did need to sit there and hit the Finish button.

I've ranted about this before though so won't again :) Just aggravating that they haven't figured this out yet. Should be easy: download a full install of the current game once you re-up your an account you've already played and therefore installed with CD keys.

I'd take one single 7.51gb download over fifteen separate install/patches any day.
