That'll learn you for trying to defy gravity. I forgot the X-Games still existed. Is this 1996? Note: Yes, those are his shoes flying off on impact. Title: Re: XXXXXXXXXXXXXX-TREME! Post by: MrHat on August 03, 2007, 11:15:03 AM HOly shit.

Tragedy is when i cut my finger, Comedy is when you fall into an open sewer and die. These are the XGames. While there are lots of things you can call "tragedy" - I don't think dumb motherfuckers willingly submitting to a 3 story halfpipe and getting seriously injured counts as tragedy. I think I watched this video like 400 times last night. It's pretty lol. Title: Re: XXXXXXXXXXXXXX-TREME! Post by: HaemishM on August 03, 2007, 11:39:17 AM Epic lulz.

Post by: Nebu on August 03, 2007, 12:00:48 PM All I asked for was something to perhaps warn people that they are going to be faced with a video they may otherwise opt to avoid. If I had known that the video was here, I never would have looked at the thread. I don't care what you post, I would just like some means to determine for myself which threads I can avoid. After years of putting people back together, I do my best to avoid as much of this kind of video as possible. As hard as you may find this to believe, I don't find this kind of stuff funny.

I do think I should've mentioned that he got up and walked away uninjured, albeit shoeless. If he got his legs bent the wrong way or anything like that I probably would've flagged it NWS or something of that nature.Title: Re: XXXXXXXXXXXXXX-TREME! Title: Re: XXXXXXXXXXXXXX-TREME! Post by: Sky on August 03, 2007, 12:21:29 PM Above all, I object to the abuse of the word tragedy. Every time some asshole stops breathing these days it's called a tragedy. The word has been devalued. You can't call every death a tragedy and expect the word to mean anything. For instance, multiple deaths do not automatically qualify as tragedies. Just because a man kills his wife and three kids, her lover, his lover, the baby-sitter, the mailman, the Amway lady, and the the guy from Publisher's Clearing House and then blows his own brains out doesn't mean a tragedy has occurred. It's interesting. It's entertaining to read about. But it's not a tragedy.
The death of a child is also not automatically a tragedy. Some guy backing over his kid in the driveway is not a tragedy, it's a bad, bad mistake. A tragedy is a literary work in which the main character comes to ruin as a consequence of a moral weakness or a fatal flaw. Shakespear wrote tragedies. A family of nine being wiped out when a train hits their camper is not a tragedy. It's called a traffic accident. You wanna know what a tragedy is? A tragedy is when you see some fat bastard in the airport with pockmarks on his face and his belly hanging out, and he's with a woman who has bad teeth and multiple bruises, and that night he's gonna make her suck his dick. That's tragedy. They don't mention that a lot on TV. -George Carlin Title: Re: XXXXXXXXXXXXXX-TREME! Title: Re: XXXXXXXXXXXXXX-TREME! Post by: Abagadro on August 04, 2007, 12:17:16 AM I was playing poker tonight when I saw that for the first time on a big plasma they have in the poker room at the casino I play at. I involuntarily went "oh shit!" really loudly which caused half the poker room to turn and look. Was kinda funny. I keep trying to figure out what he was attempting there as its not like he lost it in the middle of a trick, he just sorta launches himself into mid-air.

If you watch the video and listen to the commentary they explain it. About 3/4ths of the way up that wall he shifted his feet and started losing control of the board. Basically he was committed at that point and wasn't able to get control back before the "launch". Title: Re: XXXXXXXXXXXXXX-TREME! Post by: shiznitz on August 06, 2007, 09:01:25 AM The full video shows him completing a 720 over a huge gap just prior to this as well. I bet he was still a bit dis-oriented. Amazing he walked away. I cannot find any stories that give a lot of post-examination deatil after his hospital checkup so he must be ok. Wow. A 45' fall has a greater than 50% chance to kill you, let alone break something. His helmet, elbow pads and just being fit saved him from a lot of pain. I don't kow if I would have turned my back to the ground like he did but it seems to have been a good move.
Title: Re: XXXXXXXXXXXXXX-TREME! Post by: bhodi on August 06, 2007, 09:14:35 AM I figured spinal compression, but I guess the tilted surface saved him from that.

Title: Re: XXXXXXXXXXXXXX-TREME! Post by: Sky on August 06, 2007, 12:20:14 PM Thats one thing about crazy ass skateboarders, they usually know how to fall. I can verify that people who do things that entail a lot of falling generally learn to fall well. I'd have to take a real bad fall to get anything worse than scratches, only had one my entire life (fractured my pelvis, not even a real break, and that was only because after the fall a 6"x6"x12' beam fell on my hip, pinning it to asphalt). Normally I just get some scratches and bruises, and I've fallen several stories. That fall probably would've fucked me up, though. Title: Re: XXXXXXXXXXXXXX-TREME! Post by: Strazos on August 11, 2007, 03:36:51 PM Between hockey and skiing, I can take a fall.
I also don't wear a helmet in either sport usually. I only do in hockey during league play (and then, it's required anyway). I don't have any particular hangups against wearing helmets; it's kind of silly to not wear one....but, ski helmets are not cheap, and I don't like the idea of losing peripheral vision. And hockey? Normally I'm just playing with friends, so the risk isn't really there. I'll wear hockey shorts, shin guards, gloves, elbows, and a cup....but normally not a helmet. Title: Re: XXXXXXXXXXXXXX-TREME! Post by: Signe on August 11, 2007, 04:04:19 PM You should wear a helmet when you're playing hockey. You're a man. If you get hit by a puck in the nuts, you could get brain damage! Title: Re: XXXXXXXXXXXXXX-TREME! Post by: Raging Turtle on August 11, 2007, 04:18:46 PM He fell on his feet and then with most of his weight on his tailbone or possibly his pelvis. That's a fantastic way to fuck up your spine. He's lucky he's not paralyzed from the waist down after that.
Not a lot of 'knowing how to fall' there. :hello_kitty: Title: Re: XXXXXXXXXXXXXX-TREME! Post by: Murgos on August 11, 2007, 08:34:14 PM We'll drop you from 5 stories and you can show us all how it's done then?
Title: Re: XXXXXXXXXXXXXX-TREME! Post by: Righ on August 11, 2007, 09:59:38 PM He actually did injure himself. He broke a vertebra and his right wrist, bruised a lung and his liver. I saw it on Larry King because I wanted to see his interview with Dario Franchitti after this amazing escape in IRL:

The time off they gave him after that resulted in Vettel's debut, which in turn prompted Speed's early exit from Toro Rosso. |
