Title: It is time to flash the WRT54GL Post by: Yegolev on July 31, 2007, 08:57:53 AM We don't have a dedicated hardware section, so this is where I figure this should go.
Anyway, I just want some opinions on which firmware is best for me, and I am assuming more than one of you have this router. I'm basically looking for something that isn't going to require me to read lots of documents before being able to configure it, and it should be stable. Title: Re: It is time to flash the WRT54GL Post by: Ookii on July 31, 2007, 09:02:50 AM DD-WRT, unless you're up for doing Linux based command line networking, then I'd suggest OpenWRT.
Title: Re: It is time to flash the WRT54GL Post by: Yegolev on July 31, 2007, 09:24:34 AM I have no fear of command line, in fact I generally prefer it. However I don't have a Linux-based machine on my network.
Title: Re: It is time to flash the WRT54GL Post by: Viin on July 31, 2007, 09:39:29 AM Just buy a new one. If you try to flash it you'll just end up buying a new one anyways ..
Title: Re: It is time to flash the WRT54GL Post by: Yegolev on July 31, 2007, 09:53:10 AM I have a new one. It replaces the router in my DSL modem. Or it gets the hose.

Title: Re: It is time to flash the WRT54GL Post by: Alkiera on July 31, 2007, 10:20:59 AM I have to second the DD-WRT recommendation. I flashed my linksys G+Speedbooster with it awhile back, and haven't had near the issues I was having before. Unfortunately, the model I have has a vastly reduced flash memory size, so I can only have the smallest install, can't do much of the really really cool stuff. Still plenty of options though... and you should have more with a 54GL. It was basically designed to be flashed.
The DD-WRT people have a fairly detailed wiki with install procedures for different hardware, etc. -- Alkiera Title: Re: It is time to flash the WRT54GL Post by: bhodi on July 31, 2007, 11:17:17 AM I run DD-WRT on both my wrt54gv5 and the new buffalo, I linked them together with WDS. It was cake.
Title: Re: It is time to flash the WRT54GL Post by: Viin on July 31, 2007, 11:51:39 AM Funny, I just ran into a WRT54G Hacking book at the bookstore. It mentions DD-WRT and OpenWRT pretty much exclusively as alternative flash options.
