Title: I have decided to write an epic children's saga...
Post by: angry.bob on July 24, 2007, 12:24:53 PM
I'm being completely serious. So far I'm working out how to combine magic, Gor (without the sex), Marxist ideals defeating American-style Capitalism, neat flying battleships like in Last Exile, flying robot power armor or some shit, and an enthralling narrative carrying the main characters from tweenhood to their late teens. Once I get the first chapter written I'll post it so you can all tell me how it'll damage anyone who wanders into it on the interwebs.

This sounds like a great idea for some interactive fiction I was working on.

Isn't that movie coming out this fall?

Oh, and be sure to publish it here.

Good luck, children's sagas will sure be a cutthroat market when every publisher pushes their book to try and fill the space Harry Potter used to take up.

Write whatever you want, just make sure you have Muggles and Quidditch.

You make it sound like Harry Potter is going away.

Can you make the main character look exactly like me - would make the casting call that much easier.

Cheers

Yep.  Does anyone honestly think that they're going to kill off this money train?  Harry Potter books will keep coming out even after Rowling snuffs it.

When is Blizzard making the Harry Potter MMORPG?

Basic capitalism confuses some people. The strongest book brand in history - hey let's just immediately stop it instead of pumping out shitty encyclopedias, side-stories and eventual continuations. Because we don't want to make millions and millions of dollars!!

I completely agree, and predicted that more books would soon follow in one of the other threads. I wonder though, doesn't JKR own the whole thing lock, stock, and barrel? If that's the case she could in theory shut the whole thing down on a whim. She won't though... despite having more money than she could spend in 2 lifetimes, she'll want more.

It really all does depend on what rights are owned by whom. She could effectively block all further use if that was her intent for protecting her vision...assuming that she still has that ability.

But I still dig the assumptions that it's out of her hands. It adds such an evil bend to Scholastic Publishing that it's almost delicious. Yesssss they wish to corrupt your children, one toy at a time!!! Even those of you without child shall dance to Rowling's beat after Scholastic has had its way. Resistance is futile.

They'll reach some sort of agreement - other books set in the Potter universe, side characters, etc. After saying she was going to stop writing Potter books already she is saying that she is "probably" going to write an encyclopedia, which will no doubt be just the start.

Obviously none of us know what is in the exact contract but JK Rowling having total control is very unlikely, and even if she does have total control there is no way she'll just stop it dead.

Even assuming Rowling refuses to allow people to continue to use her world and characters I'm sure that there is a separate license based on the movie rights.  I think we've all seen examples of books published based on a movie that was in turn based on a book.  I am also sure that even though Rowling probably has some very strong control over her IP in the movies I would be willing to bet that the studios who put up the 100's of millions to get them made has left them selves plenty of money making merchandising opportunities.  Lucas taught them well.

I hear that The Chronicles of Gwenog Jones is going to be kick ass.
