Title: How does he keep my stealthed rogue targeted at extreme range?
Post by: Arrrgh on July 19, 2007, 12:00:04 PM
I'm attacking a shaman and his friend rides up so I jog a ways off and hit stealth. I never vanished. I have no debuffs on. I'm way the hell away, can barely see the shaman at this range so it's not goggles or potions, but when I click on the shaman he still has me targeted. How does he keep a stealth rogue targeted at that range? I use x-perl so I see both the target and target of target.

Hacks.

No, really, that's about all I can think of if you were in stealth and you and the shaman were of equivalent levels and he didn't have a pet.  Stealthing breaks target on anything but pets, and even that's going to be fixed soon I've heard.

Sometimes targeting info will lag. For instance when I sap a dude in arena he'll have me targeted for a second or two after, even though he can't possibly see me because I'm behind him. Alternatively it could be your unit frames bugging out.

Every PvP game I've ever played has 3rd party software available that we call "radar".  Perhaps the guy is using something similar?

Was the shaman just standing there, or was he 'casting' something? It's unlikely but possible that he used Farsight to guesstimate where you would be and targeted you.

That or your UI just bugged out. Happens.

He was just standing there, but he could have just finished casting far sight. I targeted and untargeted him twice but stayed targeted on me the whole time so it wasn't lag. Could have been a UI glitch but I haven't seen it happen any other time.

So if you get lucky and drop a farsight right on top of where a rogue is standing you see the rogue?

Farsight moves your camera to whatever you target, so if you hung around in the same spot, he would eventually see you even stealthed, the same way you can eventually uncover someone by getting near enough to them etc.

Otherwise I'm guessing a fluke bug, unless it happens again I wouldn't worry about it.

Were you sprinting?

There is a bug where if someone spots and targets a rogue, they can keep the target "locked" for about 5 seconds even if the rogue is way out of detection range. I've seen it demonstrated in some pvp video, but I can't be arsed to find it again. :P

I wasn't sprinting at the time. I may have sprinted away but I don't recall. This was a bit later after I'd stopped and was just standing there.

After playing the rogue a bit I have more respect for the rogues who actually manage to kill my lock. It's far more work to kill someone with the rogue. You need to use skills in the right order with proper timing while staying in the right position relative to your target.  No other class that I can think of off the top of my head has the same sort of annoyance that the rogue does in having to constantly try to get in position to be able to backstab/mutilate.

I haven't tried a pure combat build. Perhaps they're less dependent on being behind the target.

Hunter.

"Casterz r ez mode" compared to rogues/ hunters.  I'd say 'melee' but warriors don't have as many positioning problems as those two classes (Thanks intercept/ charge!) and who worrys about Pally damage?

Try a Feral Druid, it's a rogue missing more then half of it's interrupts and escape/defense tools.

Combat swords is the ultimate fire and forget DPS rogue build.

Don't go there. I play both and I know druids can heal!

A druid in feral gear is about as effective a healer as a rogue is with band aids.  :-(

Fun times are watching a feral shift out, heal himself, then realizing that he just blew his entire mana pool and can't shift back into feral. They don't live very long then

That's why you have mods like DruidBar, the epic BOE "Staff of Natural Fury", etc. :p

I pvp a fair bit with a feral druid guildie, and he does pretty darn good... he can rip up squishies REALLY fast in cat, switch to bear when he's getting focused and stun/root people, and he does have a big enough mana pool (gladiator feral gear does have int and heal on it, iirc) to shift out, toss a few heals, cyclone, root as needed, innervate and tranquility, etc. The only thing he doesn't do is damaging spells, but 3 (tank, melee dps, healing) out of 4 (+caster damage) ain't bad.

Best thing about feral druids is their screams when they get scare beasted by a hunter in PvP.

God, I loved fearing Druids in bear form. One in cat form I could rip up, but the bears had so much damn armor that I couldn't DPS it down. Those suckers are survivors.

So I'd fear it off and go about my business. Let the rogues, mages, and warriors kill it.
