I've got a Motorola RAZR V3m mobile. It's not bad. I like the iPhone much better but am not going that route until other providers pick it up. So in the meantime I'm using this thing. The problem I'm having is with the web browser. It's ok, but it doesn't seem to want to make secure connections with secure websites. For example, it won't work with the web portal of corporate email system even though other phones I've used (including the iPhone) can do so through their browsers. I've done some digging but haven't found anything largely because I'm not even sure where to start. I just need to make phone calls, download ring tones, and take pics. I am pretty sure I could hack into NASA with this thing.

The charging plug is just USB, so go ahead and make your own MP3s for ring tones using iTunes or whatever, set the encoding to something like 48K mono and connect it up with a USB cable to send the file.

That doesn't appear as an option in my profile. On the Motorola Phone Tools Function Panel, I only get Synchronizer, Phonebook, Calendar, Text Message, and Internet Connection in the little menu, and the Synchronizer program that launches if I click any of the first three buttons only does Contacts and Calendar. The PDF manual does show Mulitmedia Studio, but I ain't gettin' it.
That could be due to Phone Tools not recognizing the V3m by default. Whenever I install it, and after I update the install, it doesn't recognize the phone. I need to tell it to see the phone as a Motorola USB Modem and then select the model from that following list. THEN it recognizes the phone enough to do some syncing, but not enough to get me to Multimedia Studio. So, am I screwed? What I really wanted was a KRZR (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Motorola_KRZR), the razr's big brother with a 2.0mp camera -- but then I'm seeing the new RAZR 2 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Motorola_RAZR_2) and damn is it sexy... linux, 2.0mp camera, touchscreen, 45m of built-in storage with a 2gb expansion card... it's like an iPhone for people who want customizability.
The newer V3m firmwares are really hard to flash and edit, people brick their phones pretty easily; verizon has done a damned good job of making it really tough for you to fuck with it. Looks like you have a Verizon V3m or another company that locks it down like verizon does. http://www.hacktherazr.com/ There are guides on that site to unlocking the full functionality of the phone. I've done ot with my Verizon phone. It WILL void your warranty. Follow the introductory guide to installing all of the correct Motorola drivers, Motorola PST Phone programmer, and P2K seem editor. Follow the guide to performing the seem edit that will unlock the multimedia studio in Motorola phone tools (it basically changes the string the phone sends to phone tools to V3mM instead of V3m - telling phone tools its ok to allow Multimedia studio to work) Its pretty clearly explained on the site, I didn't have any trouble figuring it out with a bit of trial and error. You do need to be using XP and not XP64 for it to work though, the motorola drivers don't work under XP64. I had to set up my laptop to do it. I've set up several of the other things they describe on that site, including modifying my phone's menu background, and enabling my laptop to use the phone as a data modem for internet access. General disclaimer, although I said above its not hard. This WILL void your warranty, and if you fuck it up, you may brick your phone. I won't be taking any actions against this limitation. I'll tinker with PCs all day long, but breaking a cellphone would require I spent money on buying a new one. And I'd rather not just to access one place from which I get email (all my other email accounts work fine). I appreciate the insights and legwork all! My coworker has a V3m from sprint, and he didn't have to do any seem editing to make multimedia studio in phone tools work. Try fooling with the phone recognition in phone tools, maybe if you get the right one, it will work correctly. Also you could try the motorola driver pack from the site I linked.. maybe getting the phine and PC talking right from the PC end will be enough.
