Title: How walkable is your home?
Post by: Oban on July 17, 2007, 11:08:57 PM
Neat little website I just saw on a blog.  I scored, or rather my house scored, a 54.

I got an 82.  I'd probably score higher if the thing took into account that I can walk to work too.   :-D

Ditto. Well, 83. It would be much higher if it realized that I live within a block of the local light rail and two major bus arteries. It also miscalculated the nearest park being 0.6 miles away, when it's actually two blocks away.

Still, neato.

Getting on public transport to get somewhere important should lower your walkrank, imo.

Walk Score: 23 out of 100

No shit, really?

Eat it, environment.

Ed:  And that should be lower still.   BP does NOT count as a grocery store you sad, sad webdesigners.  Nor do out-of-district schools count, but I can give them a pass on that one since they have no way of knowing.

Address not found.  Imagine my surprise.

There needs to be a Scottish one.  It could be a walkable chart and a likelyhood of getting stabbed subchart.

Everytime we went out drinking he would scream at women about "poonanny," which he said was Spanish for pussy, but I didn't believe him.  Mainly I was too scared of him to say otherwise.  One time he bet some guy $400 that he could kick a football over the goalpost of the football field from the 50 yard line.  He lost.  He drove a car that he "found" in the woods.  For some reason everyone let him drive us home when we were wasted and I swear he went 80 down these country backroads in the woods just so he could hit this little bridge and go airborne.  I've never come closer to dying.  Plus he always tried to score coke from black people.

82 for me. I'm curious what would increase that score since everything they have listed is within a half mile with most things being in the .2m range. Is this a walking score for the lazy or disabled or somesuch?

Edit: Best part of my location is the closest places are all bars, with 8 bars within .5 miles of my house. =)

From the site:

Your Walk Score is a number between 0 and 100. The walkability of an address depends on how far you are comfortable walking—after all, everything is within walking distance if you have the time. Here are general guidelines for interpreting your score:

    * 90 - 100 = Walkers' Paradise: Most errands can be accomplished on foot and many people get by without owning a car.
    * 70 - 90 = Very Walkable: It's possible to get by without owning a car.
    * 50 - 70 = Some Walkable Locations: Some stores and amenities are within walking distance, but many everyday trips still require a car.
    * 25 - 50 = Not Walkable: Only a few destinations are within easy walking range. For most errands, driving is a must.
    * 0 - 25 = Driving Only: Virtually no neighborhood destinations within walking range. You can walk from your house to your car!

95.

I can walk to anything, living in the heart of Boston is pretty choice.  About the only thing I need a car for is when I go skiing in the winter and that could be done by train.  Actually, where I live is so convenient I have to wonder what I could possible have lost those 5 points for?

I walk to work, I walk to the grocery store (two full sized super-markets in range), more shops, restaurants and stores than I can possibly visit - THREE shopping malls fit into the .2 mi zone, a couple of major museums, theater (movies, plays, opera and music all nearby), parks and one of the largest public libraries in the world.  If they were to extend the radius another .1 mile I would get a major state government center, a major league stadium (Fenway), and two of the most famous parks in the US (The Public Garden and the Boston Commons), sailing on the Charles River and etc....

Maybe I lost points because if I actually want to leave the country it will take about 15 minutes to get to a major seaport or airport?

57. Everything under a mile (it's just about a mile to work and walkable)...except bookstore. 11 miles. Walmart is the only place to buy books in this town. I hate my town.

Most place I've lived have been 0.

Are you sure he was from Scotland?  Sounds more like Alabama.  I know what poonanny is.

And my walk score is a ZERO.  Beat that, you coven of hippies.

EDIT:  Heh, it says the closest park to me is Dogwood Hills Mobile Home Park.  Fail!  Good thing I have a big yard.

Far be it from me to reinforce stereotyping but that sounds like just about every member of my rugby team, for starters.  Not extreme examples, either.  But then I reckon that the average college kid would do most of that in the US too, no?

The 400 dollar bet thing might sound un-Scottish were it not for the cocaine you mention.  Oh, and your fucked exchange rate, which means that Bill Gates barely passes for well-to-do middle-classed over here.

Walk Score of 11, which is really horseshit, because they list a Super Stop as a grocery store, but that really only applies if I'm eating a diet of goddamn Twinkies and stale bread. Nor does it take into account the summer heat and humidity in August, which is enough to kill the healthiest human trying to walk farther than .5 miles.

Zero.  Forget suburban living, rural for the win.  I disagree with the park thing though.  I'm surrounded by forrests, lakes, and bike trails.  My last house got a 23, but that's not right either.  For example, it listed a supermarket less than a mile away, but didn't take into account that there is no road that gets you there any quicker than about 5 miles.  Why does that matter if you're going to walk?  Because it means walking through several privately owned lots.  Other things in proximity have you crossing an interstate.

Those strange little bugs that commit suicide in pairs on my windscreen makes walking in Houston more preferable to driving.  They've never tried to kill themselves on me, just my car.  I don't want the responsibility.

Well, I've been humbled.  The guy in the cube across from me, who lives about two blocks from me, scored a 97 :(

My brother, in Florida scored a solid, and in my opinion well deserved, 0.  Heck, on hot days he takes his car to check the mail.

You CAN walk to anything, but since it's so expensive to live there can you afford to do anything after walking there?  I've looked at several academic positions in Boston and I couldn't afford to live in much more than a 1BR apartment on my salary.

I'm doing OK 8-)  But yes, everything costs more in Boston and I don't even mean rent.  It's not as bad as Manhattan but it's up there.  I can tell you that a Saturday afternoon drinking at a sidewalk place on Boyleston or Newbury with a Sox game in the evening is one of the great pleasures of the civilized world.

I have a 2 br. apt.  If you need a place to stay for a day or two to check out the area and interviews let me know.  At last count I think I came up with 27 different colleges and universities in the immediate area so I would be surprised if you couldn't find something.

A 52 here.  And it didn't take into account that the only sidewalks on the major roads go by underpasses where all the illegal aliens hang out looking for work and groping women who walk by.  Although with traffic the way it is around here on weekday afternoons you might as well be walking.  Their version of a grocery store is the local Stater Brothers which I might say has quite the poor selection of quality foods.  It's almost like a Wal-Mart without the bonus of being cheap.

Now with more clauses!

How It Doesn't Work: Known Issues with Walk Score

We'll be the first to admit that Walk Score is just an approximation of walkability. There are a number of factors that contribute to walkability that are not part of our algorithm:

    * Street width: Narrow streets are better for walking because they slow traffic.
    * Block length: Short blocks make it easier to navigate the grid.
    * Freeways: Freeways can divide neighborhoods and hurt walkability.
    * Public transit: Good public transit is important for walkable neighborhoods.
    * Safety: How much crime is in the neighborhood? How many traffic accidents are there? Are crosswalks well marked and streets well lit?
    * Aesthetics: Are the sidewalks shaded by trees? Are there appealing parks and public spaces?
    * Pedestrian-friendly design: Are buildings close to the sidewalk with parking in back? If buildings have large parking lots in front, they are less inviting to pedestrians.

As MarlonBain said, "You should use the Web 3.0 app called going outside and investigating the world for yourself" before deciding whether a neighborhood is walkable!
Incorrect Google Map Results

All of the locations shown on Walk Score come from the Google Maps API. You may notice that some of these results are not accurate. E.G. something shows up in the parks category that is not really a park, or a restaurant shows up that has gone out of business.

We're using the most accurate data available to us and are working with Google to improve the accuracy of results. If you see an incorrect result, please let us know so we can investigate.
Other Issues

We are currently using "as the crow flies" distances rather than walking directions. This means if you live across the lake from a destination, we are assuming you will swim. We are investigating using Google Driving Directions to calculate our distances. Hopefully, Google will add Walking Directions in the future!

Technically you can walk to anything in most places if you don't value your life. And I'm not referring to lurking Scotsmen. At this end of PA and in most of NJ they don't like putting sidewalks anywhere, so walking is like Frogger.

Interesting about the distances they've listed for some of places around me.  I didn't realize I was that close, not that I would want to walk anyways.  My town isn't called Lake in the Hills for nothing.
