I'm sick of people on cell phones while driving, and now they're starting to fucking text too. I want a jammer that I can put in my car that just constantly jams them whenever my engine is running, preferably with a range of a hundred yards or so, and even better if it fries their phones somehow. I've tried looking on the internet, but apparently they're illegal here and I don't want to build one from Radio Shack parts. Anyone here live in a country that they're legal to buy them?

Please, help me make the world a better place by shitting all over a bunch of random stranger's day.

Come July 7th in California it will be illegal to drive and use a cell phone at the same time.

Righ has to carry his phone everywhere but he doesn't talk on it while he's driving.  I can't even tell you how many times we've seen near accidents or almost been hit by distracted drivers chatting on phones.

The only thing worse than people who talk and drive at the same time would be those same people staring at their cellphone, wondering why it wasn't working, trying to redial, looking at the the signal strength bars instead of the road...

A woman I work with just totaled her car because she was trying to text while driving. She was none to please when I cut her zero slack, had no sympathy for her, and tore her a new asshole for being so arrogant as to think replying to a text saying, "Have a good day" was more important than properly controlling a huge metallic machine hurtling down the road.

I rarely ever use my phone while driving; pretty much only when I receive a call while driving, and that's almost never.

It already is in Scotland and has been for a while - It makes fuck all difference.  Trust me.  None.  The only good part is that you have an extra charge that the family of the deceased can try to make stick on the cuntbag that walks away from the horrific crash after sustaining a bruise on his mobile ear while your family was killed.

Its been illegal in Austria for a while, and the only thing that means is that those assholes pay a fine once in a while when the police needs some money and is out to catch them in the act. But most people just have a hands-free system installed in their car, which is legal.

Stick an amplifier between that and the antenna, and you have what Bob is looking for. Actually their high power jammers on that site work from 24V supplies and do up to 300m. You could pimp your ride to accommodate them.

I think I would pay to watch Bob use one of these things on people.

Seriously, I just want a sonic blaster that gives folks a headache.  Too many fucks (rightly) assume they can do what they want to anyone.  Without killing folks I'd like a device that simply makes them extremely uncomfortable.  Without injecting Howard Stern on them - I do have some ethics.

Making it illegal doesn't do shit. It has been illegal to use a cellphone without a hands-free device in New York state for a few years but it doesn't stop anybody. The only reason I comply is because my new car has an excellent quality Bluetooth system built in and I can voice dial through it.  People only get busted for talking on a cellphone if they are getting busted for something else anyway. FWIW, it's a $150 fine. I don't know how many points, if any.

Maybe you should comply and pay attention to the road rather than gabbing. It's not the handset so much as lack of attention. But you're probably special.

For most states, having handsfree DOES = compliance.

They may call it a "distracted driving" statute, but it's really a "phone held up to the ear" statute.

Making it illegal in Georgia would be the only excuse I needed to not bother answering for two hours a day.

A new study - I think it was Swedish - recently concluded that having hands free systems doesn't make any difference. The danger is the actual conversation and lack of concentration, not the fiddling about with the phone (of course texting is a different matter).

Indeed. I saw somebody run a stop sign the other day with both hands off the wheel, gesticulating and shouting at whomever was on the other end of his bluetooth headset enabled phone conversation.

I can't remember the book I read it in (it was some travel book) but there was a funny anecdote about travelling in Italy and seeing cars pulled over with people talking on cell phones, which if you are Italian requires both hands to be free to wildly gesticulate.

And yes just the act of talking is a distraction while driving. I'm a noticably worse driver when I'm talking with passengers in the car which is very disconcerting since that's when you want to actually be a better driver since you are now responsible for other lives, not just your own.

The day we moved to the US, my sister picked us up at the airport.  Her phone rang, she answered and afterwards I sort of chastised her for it.  She agreed and said she'd use her hands free set up.  Soooo... she's driving down the busy highway, fumbling with this hands free crap, taking her hands off the wheel, fiddling with stuff and trying to attach the cradle to the dashboard.  I was hysterically laughing in agony.

Id like a giant zero-phase emitter that would negate out really loud and annoying car stereos (THUMP THUMP THUMP THUMP). Even better if the jerk turns up his volume all the way wondering why the hell he cant hear his stereo anymore...and then when Im out of range, his system fries itself.

There was a Popular Science article that described an easy way to make one of those.  Well, easy if you have a large gun or other explosive, and a powerful magnet.  You just need to move a powerful magnet very quickly through a copper coil.  It is, however, omnidirectional.

I believe it takes a stronger pulse, one that would cause enough current to blow some of the delicate components.  Really I don't see it being terribly effective unless you are in close proximity or make a really big one, the sort where the driving explosion creates a mushroom cloud and other bad side effects.  I'm not an electrical engineer, and in fact I did rather poorly in my EE classes.

So what your all basically saying is, you want the act of opening your mouth and speaking while driving a car to be illegal?

I say that police officers should be able to enforce the laws through a punch to the face. Trust me, you won't talk on your cell phone if a burly police officer jacks you in the jaw for blabbing into your phone.

We do it all the time at work actually.  "Hey!  Shield your module!  You just killed the data acquisition computer again!"  "The camera is fine where it is!" *bang* "Fuck."  It wouldn't necessarily need to destroy circuitry, just interrupt it enough to cause it to interfere with vehicles on the road and their onboard computers (just raise the ground so that it turns everything off).  30 year old car for the win!  Just need to shield the diode trio in the alternator and the ignition circuit.  All you really need is a high current with a very fast rise-time and a "good" antenna to give it some direction.  You can build one to get power from your onboard alternator\battery and switch it up to where you want it to go using mostly generic off the shelf parts (my thesis project actually involved this).  Being a pulsed power engineer has its benefits ;-)

Granted it would probably require lots of testing before actually being something I would never have the guts to use on the road...

It's not talking so much as doing it on the phone, as shown by several studies.  When a passenger is in the car it's not bad because they can tell the times you need to focus on driving and the conversation will subconciously ebb and flow with the situation.  When someone is on the phone, whether hands-free or not, they literally start paying more attention to the person on the other end than driving.

I tried making a heat/death ray in the front end of my car out of capacitors, old microwave oven magnetrons, and other bits. I used my horn as a trigger so that whenever anyone cut me off I could honk and bathe them with microwaves. I don't believe I contructed it correctly as it seems to have no effect, and was wondering if you had any scematics available I could follow.
