Title: Gamepro takes a whack at Gaming Journalism, LOLmeter hits 11. Post by: schild on June 19, 2007, 02:41:03 PM http://www.gamepro.com/gamepro/international/games/features/117449.shtml
Quote 1. The gaming media just play games all day long. False. We write (and talk) all day, and we rather enjoy it. If we wanted to play games all day long we would have been professional gamers on the Major League Gaming tour or washed-up somewhere in our parents' basement. The Verdict: Couldn't be further from the truth, though game journalism has its perks like an rewarding profession. Remember: the more we write the more coverage you get. We like it that way and we suspect you do, too. Oh, Gamepro. Who even knew you still existed? Title: Re: Gamepro takes a whack at Gaming Journalism, LOLmeter hits 11. Post by: Yegolev on June 19, 2007, 02:49:54 PM If you say so, they are blocked in the corporate proxy. Perils of using the word "game" in your URL.
Sounds like they are saying they want to bullshit all day instead of play games. I need a picture of Mel Brooks as Comicus at the unemployment counter talking to Bea Arthur, but it's late so I will just let you think on that yourself. Title: Re: Gamepro takes a whack at Gaming Journalism, LOLmeter hits 11. Post by: Kail on June 19, 2007, 02:51:55 PM Quote 4. Game journalists can't write original content. The observation: game journalists write top 10 lists to no end, they slam Jack Thompson, and they overuse the word "suck" when describing a "new" feature. There's no way to sugar coat this charge -- sadly, it's often true. Original writing is lacking in video game reporting. That's not to say list stories don't have their place (hopefully this list is one of those places)... BONK BONK BONK.... Title: Re: Gamepro takes a whack at Gaming Journalism, LOLmeter hits 11. Post by: schild on June 19, 2007, 03:11:03 PM That was the other one I wanted to quote ;)
Title: Re: Gamepro takes a whack at Gaming Journalism, LOLmeter hits 11. Post by: Miasma on June 19, 2007, 04:04:50 PM You just know that article itself was a top ten list until the editor proofread it and found out it bashed... top ten lists. The response - "Cut it down to eight so we don't look quite so stupid".
A top eight list bashing top ten lists, fan-fucking-tastic. Also, the comments section, icing on the cake. Title: Re: Gamepro takes a whack at Gaming Journalism, LOLmeter hits 11. Post by: Krakrok on June 19, 2007, 05:30:55 PM If game 'journalists' don't play games then why would anyone give a fuck what they have to write. Post by: Yoru on June 19, 2007, 05:57:26 PM If game 'journalists' don't play games then why would anyone give a fuck what they have to write. It's Gamepro. No one's given a fuck what they have to write for a decade, if not more. Hell, I remember GameproTV - completely worthless, even in the pre-internet heydey of gaming magazines. Title: Re: Gamepro takes a whack at Gaming Journalism, LOLmeter hits 11. Post by: KyanMehwulfe on June 19, 2007, 07:11:52 PM Oh, GamePro. I remember when I used to still look forward to their magazines each month... In 1992... When The Wizard and neon in dark foggy arcades was cool.
Seems so foreign, the gaming scene back then as a whole, in hindsight to where we're at now. Title: Re: Gamepro takes a whack at Gaming Journalism, LOLmeter hits 11. Title: Re: Gamepro takes a whack at Gaming Journalism, LOLmeter hits 11. Post by: HaemishM on June 20, 2007, 09:42:19 AM When I was working at EB in 1991, Gamepro was shit. It had the worst screenshots, graphic design and writing of all the magazines. EGM beat it like a drum.
I see no reason to think it's improved, and based just on the quotes pasted in this thread, I'd be right. Title: Re: Gamepro takes a whack at Gaming Journalism, LOLmeter hits 11. Post by: schild on June 20, 2007, 09:45:42 AM My first mag sub was Ranger Rick.

It must be why I grew up to be such a good boy. Title: Re: Gamepro takes a whack at Gaming Journalism, LOLmeter hits 11. Post by: schild on June 20, 2007, 01:59:02 PM ^^^ that was my second one.
Nintendo Power was my third. Starting with issue #1. God I loved Nintendo Power back in the day. Title: Re: Gamepro takes a whack at Gaming Journalism, LOLmeter hits 11. Post by: WindupAtheist on June 20, 2007, 03:02:51 PM Is that "Blast Processing doesn't really mean anything!" article Nintendo Power ran back in the day available online anywhere?

Title: Re: Gamepro takes a whack at Gaming Journalism, LOLmeter hits 11. Post by: Hayduke on June 20, 2007, 04:03:50 PM Heh yeah I had Ranger Rick and Zoobooks. Also Nintendo Power for way too long.
BONK BONK BONK.... How great is it that this quote is right under the "Digg This" button. I swear that point just about sums up every web 2.0 social bookmarking site out there. Title: Re: Gamepro takes a whack at Gaming Journalism, LOLmeter hits 11. Post by: Kail on June 20, 2007, 04:40:58 PM I especially love their "refutations" of all these claims which are "not based in reality".
Point 8: Gaming journalism has no credibility. Verdict: Yes it does! It totally does! Point 7: Game companies are in bed with game reviewers. Verdict: Yeah, some better transparency would help fix this, or something... Point 6: Game reporting is too sensationalist. Verdict: True, but so is everyone else. Point 5: Game journalism is primarily there to hype the games. Verdict: True, but only when companies don't tell us the bad things about their games. Point 4: Game reviewers can't write very well. Verdict: True! But we're trying to get better! Point 3: Game reviewers don't always finish the games before they review them. Verdict: Also true... Point 2: Reporters only ask softball questions in interviews. Verdict: It depends! Point 1: You guys just play games all day long. Verdict: This one is definitely false! Some of the time we spend writing top ten lists. Title: Re: Gamepro takes a whack at Gaming Journalism, LOLmeter hits 11. Title: Re: Gamepro takes a whack at Gaming Journalism, LOLmeter hits 11. Post by: Yegolev on June 21, 2007, 11:14:55 AM I read them but I don't know about having a subscription or not.

Title: Re: Gamepro takes a whack at Gaming Journalism, LOLmeter hits 11. Post by: Murgos on June 21, 2007, 11:39:54 AM My first subscription was to Dragon. I don't consider those kids magazines anything I subscribed to, it's not like I ordered or spent my allowance on them.
Title: Re: Gamepro takes a whack at Gaming Journalism, LOLmeter hits 11. Post by: Tebonas on June 21, 2007, 11:42:18 AM There seems to be no online picture of my first subscription magazine (XeST) in existence, therefore my second one will have to do.

Title: Re: Gamepro takes a whack at Gaming Journalism, LOLmeter hits 11. Post by: Chimpy on June 21, 2007, 09:22:53 PM I think Highlights was the first subscription for kids' stuff my house had (subscription was started for my older sister) though the first one I had for myself was probably Boy's Life.
I guarantee the first magazine I ever looked at was probably Playboy. My dad had a subscription from 67-79 and had all of them in the yearly albums on a shelf in the living room. (Back then the "free gift" for subscribing apparently was a schnazzy brown magazine album with a bunny and the year in gold letters on the spine) Yes, I grew up in a classy household. Anyhoo, I always thought they were crappy. Diehard Gamefan/EGM/EGM-squared were far superior. (Especially Gamefan. Damn, I miss that rag.) Title: Re: Gamepro takes a whack at Gaming Journalism, LOLmeter hits 11. Post by: schild on June 22, 2007, 02:34:52 PM GameFan has been replaced by Hardcore Gamer Magazine which is Just Awesome.
Title: Re: Gamepro takes a whack at Gaming Journalism, LOLmeter hits 11. Post by: Strazos on June 22, 2007, 03:39:56 PM Hardcore Gamer Magazine? Seriously? lol
Anyway, I also had a sub to Nintendo Power for....who knows how long. I had to finally throw out the stacks I had when I moved last year. I even had them organized in such a way so that the comic chapters in each issue were in order (for stuff like Zelda, etc). But I never really cared about the postcard contests, or high score crap. Hell, I'm probably closer to the anti-Schild than WUA, though I'm not sure that's a desirable title to have... Title: Re: Gamepro takes a whack at Gaming Journalism, LOLmeter hits 11. Hardcore Gamer magazine is the last magazine written TRULY for the love of the game. It's written by the people at Double Jump (who makes, BY FAR, the best strat guides on the market), and helps keep them afloat. Fighting red hershey kisses outside the first town with my bamboo stick.
Title: Re: Gamepro takes a whack at Gaming Journalism, LOLmeter hits 11. Post by: Fabricated on June 25, 2007, 03:47:38 AM I had a subscription to Game Players->Ultra Game Players for years until they canned the mag. It was pretty good for a game rag. GamePro has NEVER been good.
GameFAN was a pretty magazine (better quality paper) and had a lot of screenshots/content, but the reviewers were the biggest fanboys ever. Not the regular "lol halo rox" kind of fanboys, but the kind of people who wept openly at the demise of the Dreamcast and considered Mario 64 the pinnacle of the "art". Game snobs basically. Is "Play" magazine still around? IIRC it was laid out real artsy with huge screenshots and awful anime/game reviews. Title: Re: Gamepro takes a whack at Gaming Journalism, LOLmeter hits 11. Sadly, everyone read EGM with its microscopic review blurbs, number scores, and HAY LOOK AT ALL THE JAPANESE GAMES YOU WON'T EVER GET TO PLAY LEGALLY. EVER bullshit and it tried playing catchup and turned into an EGM clone. Which like EGM itself, sucked. Luckily Next Generation took over a for a while. These days I only read Retro Gamer out of the UK. A little too much Spectrum coverage, and not enough C64 action, but it beats the NES/SNES fellatio of US retrogame stuff...
