Ok, here's the situation. I had a wisdom tooth removed about a month ago. I just have a filling put in next to where it was. Fast forward a day or two, I feel something weird on the inside of my mouth. Feels like a cut or something, near at the inner corner where the tooth was. Turns out it is exposed bone.

It doesn't hurt, but it does feel slightly odd when I chew. And more importantly, my jaw is apparently growing through my gums. WTF?

And people say aliens don't walk among us.

You know, I'm not sure we have anyone knowledgeable in dentistry on the boards. Orthodontics. Whatever. I'm always surprised though.

Did they have to crack the tooth to get it out?  If so, my guess is that it's just a small shard of the tooth that got left behind in your gum.  I had the exact same thing happen about a month after my wisdom teeth came out.  Perfectly normal, or so I was told.  Just give it a few months and it'll work its way completely out.

On the other hand, get your ass back in the dentist chair before your skull explodes.

Without wanting to badmouth the esteemed people here, your body and the brakes of your car should be tended for by RL experts instead of online.

I'd be happy to tell people how to replace their brake pads. Just did it on my wife's 92 Explorer a couple months ago. Transmission work is the nasty thing :)

Same here.  Once enough of the old tooth shard was exposed I was able to just pull the little bastards out.  No big deal.

Transmission work is no fun due to the sheer weight and awkward manueverability of the unit!  Not to mention all those stupid snap rings inside...

Weird thing is, I never even pulled mine out.  One day I looked for it and it was just gone.  My best guess is that I swallowed it in my sleep.   :|  Luckily it doesn't seem to have chewed its way out of my stomach.  Yet.

Make sure to mention that when you're in the hospital a few years from now and Dr. House is trying figure out what your Mysterious Illness is.  Preferably before they try the 3 or 4 treatments that actually make you worse before House has his epiphany.

I am going to call the denstist, was just curious if anyone knew anything. I did have my tooth cracked but it is pretty friggin big for a "shard." The edge is very sharp, my guess is that when I got followup dental work the soft tissue was pounded enough to regress.

Bah!  First, brakework is EASY!!!  Especially rotors and pads.  2 bolts, people.  Nothing more than that.  I've done my front brakes in 20 minutes before, and that was only the third time!  Don't believe me?  Get a chiltons or equivalent for your car and check it out.

Drum brakes are a bit trickier.

Also, do you want some failure at life, or some 18yr old doing your brakework?  Do you think they really care about your life?  Hell, how many people you've never met honestly care about your life?

I'll trust the 18 year old over my skills at replacing vehicle parts.

Factory service manual for the win!  Disc brakes are almost a joke.  The hardest part about it all is making sure you clean all moving parts so the calipers will keep the brake pads evenly wearing and making sure you use enough of the right kind of grease to keep it lubed (burning out a bearing at 70MPH is not a good thing).  Drums are only a pain because every company had some aspect of them that they did differently, but the general principle is the same.  Those failures at life at places like Midas can't even be trusted to put the brake shoes on in the correct order, so I don't trust them any further than I can throw them (not far).

Working on your own car is a good thing mostly because you can see what parts of your vehicle were well engineered and what parts were chosen for cost saving measures.  If you do it right you won't break any nails ;-)

I have a debit card so I don't have to learn how to change my brakes. I have no doubts I could do it, but it isn't worth the hassle to me. Ditto for oil changes.

I agree here.  It's not as if I could not do it, I just don't have the time or inclination.  My dad was a mechanic so I have at least a passing familiarity with pre-computer cars, BUT!  I haven't even paid someone to change the oil in my Maxima for over 6000 miles, forget doing it myself.  If I did maintenance myseld, I would have to acquire parts and take the time to do it in some place where my wife would not complain about the ensuing stains and/or environmental damage.  Just replacing the wiper blades was, for whatever reason, an inscrutable ordeal.

My car rides too low to get it up on jacks or ramps, so I just go to Jiffy Lube for oil changes; they have a drive-in mechanic's pit. Pretty hard to fuck that up.

I prefer to do the work myself when possible.

Forgetting the drain pan plug can ruin your day.  But you can do that in the comfort of your own home too ;-)
